| | George Jones I Am What I Am CD George Jones Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
George Jones spent much of the late 1970s in a cocaine and alcohol-induced haze, spiraling down into a state of dissipation that eventually landed him in the hospital. A well-publicized stint in rehab was followed by the recording of I AM WHAT I AM, an album that bears the imprint of Jones' rough and rowdy past, as well as his uncertainty over what the future held. Drinking is the central focus of many of the songs on I AM WHAT I AM. Best among them are "If Drinking Don't Kill Me, Her Memory Will," a tune destined to be remembered as one of Jones' signature tunes, and "I've Aged Twenty Years In Five."
Elsewhere, Jones sings about barroom pickups ("A Hard Act To Follow," "Brother To The Blues"), patient women and their philandering husbands ("Good Hearted Woman," "Bone Dry"), and good old fashioned cheating ("I'm The One She Missed Him With Today"). Of course, what really distinguishes I AM WHAT I AM is the presence of "He Stopped Loving Her Today," easily the best single of George Jones' later career. As on most 1980s country records, the slick production is an acquired taste.
This is part of Legacy's American Milestones series.
Recorded at CBS Recording Studios, Nashville, Tennessee. Includes liner notes by George Jones and Glenn Gass.

No Depression (7-8/00, p.95) - "...The rarest of Nashville creations, an album that demands to be taken seriously as a comprehensive, complex work of art....[a] masterpiece." I Am What I Am Review

I Am What I Am album
$14.19 Appearing as they did hot on the heels of George Jones' and Tammy Wynette's divorce, both THE BATTLE and MEMORIES OF US (two mid-'70s albums now available on a single Koch CD) have often been characterized as George Jones' "divorce albums." Of course, tales of heartbreak and failed romance have never been foreign to George Jones' music, nor have the emotive vocals that seem to emanate from the bottom of the singer's soul. Regardless, BATTLE and MEMORIES remain two of Jones' finest efforts of this era.
Both albums find Jones at his most introspective, especially on "You Always Look Your Best (Here In My ...
| | Patty Loveless When Fallen Angels Fly CD (1994)
I Am What I Am CD music
$6.05 How does an artist follow up not only the best album of their career but probably the best country album of the year? That was Patty Loveless' dilemma after her 1993 gold album, ONLY WHAT I FEEL. Fortunately, Loveless sets all minds to rest with the spectacular WHEN FALLEN ANGELS FLY.
Patty Loveless is one of country music's strongest vocalists, a favorite duet/harmony partner of many country artists, especially super-vocalist Vince Gill. Her voice is the mournful call of the hills of Kentucky, powerful and proud, yet expressive and vulnerable. She brings a spiritual and graceful depth to her material, especially the ballads, her forte. From the wrenching "You Don't Even Know Who I Am" to the hushed "Over My Shoulder" Loveless offers pristine classics, and once again hits her artistic zenith. Then she switches gears and has fun with the novelty hit "I Think About Elvis" and rocks out with the Rolling Stones-ish "Old Weakness (Coming On Strong)." Her songs are varied, but always mature and haunting.
Patty Loveless is a stylist in the classic sense, an interpreter extraordinaire. Her song selection is impeccable, her production crisp and reverent. She is the best of all musical worlds: passionate, inspirational ...

$13.05 A PICTURE OF ME was originally released in 1972 on Epic (31718). NOTHING EVER HURT ME was originally released in 1973 on Epic (32412). Includes liner notes by Rich Kienzle & Emily Mitchell.
A typically excellent release by the reissue label Koch International, this almost-sixty-minute CD collects two full albums by the legendary George Jones. Released in 1972 and 1973, these two albums are among the first fruits of Jones' 20-year partnership with producer Billy Sherrill. Sherrill wisely scaled back his trademark Spectoresque "countrypolitan" sound for these albums by the fiercely traditional ...
