Decimate The Weak
$12.78 It's hard to not be impressed by the sheer sonic onslaught that is otherwise known as Nile. Except to the most hardened death metal fanatic, the genre has a way of sounding the same after a while, but Nile is one of the few exceptions -- able to put their own unmistakable ...

| | Toby Keith American Ride CD (2009)
Decimate The Weak
$11.99 With most contemporary country artists, you could guarantee that a song called "American Ride" would be a slice of jingoism, but Toby Keith isn't like most country singers. His "American Ride" casts a cynical eye at desperate housewives and wannabe pop stars, not celebrating down-home values but wondering where we're all headed on this American Ride at the end of the 2000s, a sentiment not all that far removed from some of Keith's previous social commentary, which makes it a mild surprise that it is the only song here that doesn't come from his own pen. As superb and striking as it is, it's not necessarily a good keystone for the rest of the record, which does have a few tougher numbers that pick up on the lean, mean vibe of 2008's THAT DON'T MAKE ME A BAD GUY -- "Every Dog Has Its Day," the sly "If I Had One," and the heavy blues stomp "Loaded" -- but spends more time on the softer side, even when he kicks up a bit of dust on the dancefloor on "You Can't Read My Mind" or does a funny, respectful salute to military life on "Ballad of Balad." In other words, the real touchstone for the rest of the record is "Tender as I Wanna Be," where he lets his guard down and lets the romance ...

| | Tim Walters Dry Well CD (1995)
Decimate The Weak
$12.69 The Dry Well is a dark and emotionally charged work of musique concrete, created by extreme digital processing of acoustic sound sources. The first three tracks ("Two-Thirds God", "Descent of Inanna", and "Under") are based on the Epic of Gilgamesh, a Sumerian legend that may be the oldest surviving work of literature. They evoke ritual, mythic journey, and the transition from the material to the spiritual realm. The last three tracks ("For Want of a Nail", "Valence", and "The Dry Well"), by contrast, are based on the formal idea of achieving as much as possible with severely limited means. Every sound in the three pieces originated from a kalimba (African thumb piano) built by one Molly Clark, age 8. From this child's instrument, a wealth of sound was created, gradually moving away from "natural" kalimba tone and toward the realm of pure noise. Some review excerpts:Probably one of the greatest feats a musician can accomplish is to overpower their listener and take them inside the world they have created, making them experience their music in more ways that just aurally... [Walters] has succeeded at it quite brilliantly..... An intense work that will undoubtedly enthrall fans of dark ambient and experimental music, The Dry Well creates its own unique atmosphere. It's visual music for your ears. (Parabrisas) Truly fascinated, I found myself completely absorbed in the aural world of Tim Walters.... Well articulated and structured, these pieces create sonic experiences that will resonate profoundly between the ears. (imr) Much of the time as I listen to this music I think of late nights spent alone as a child without adult supervision as I listened to the house creak and sway in the wind. There is a great deal of reminiscent quality within distinct pieces of sound present on this album that I can readily identify having experienced throughout my life. I find it both eerie and vaguely ecstatic that I find myself going through deja vu while playing this album in the background while accomplishing many of my daily tasks. Tim Walters has done an excellent job of quantifying musically many of the memories evoked by sound whether intentional or otherwise. (Sonic Boom) Tim Walters has a "handle" on this art - I greatly enJOYed his work, and those of you out there who aren't AFRAID to travel new paths will, too! For those inclined to explore, this is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (Improvijazzation Nation) Ever wonder what it sounds like *inside* that trash can icon on your desktop? Tim Walters knows. The Dry Well is deep and hollow with digital echoes, and trashy metallic samples (including, ...

| | Parallax Project I Hate Girls CD (2009)
Decimate The Weak
$10.38 Parallax Project was supposed to be a loosely organized, shifting collection of musicians. That's what founding member Michael Giblin envisioned when he set out to create his first solo album, 2002's "Oblivious", but where you're headed and where you end up are often two different things. In assembling a band to promote the album, he ended up with a crack live unit that drew upon a collective love of 60s Mod, 70's new wave, and Elvis (the skinny, mousy British one). Over the course of the next few years, the band honed its edge and flaunted its love of the Ray Davies songbook, the result of which was the band's 2nd album, "Perpetual Limbo". Produced by Don Dixon, their third full length release (and Kool Kat debut) "I Hate Girls", now flaunts the fruits of Michael's time spent touring, hanging, and recording with The Plimsouls and Magic Christian! And Plimsouls-inspired it certainly is throughout - see songs like "All The Same" and "Coming Around" for proof! But there's also much more going on here. Imagine if Difford and Tillbrook of Squeeze got together with Ronnie Lane of the Faces to write a song - you'd probably wind up with "The Day After Tomorrow"! The crunchy guitar-lead "Waiting To Pull The Trigger" features some very cool Difford/Tillbrook-like dual lead vocals. In fact, one fan was overheard to say "It ...
