| | Flyleaf CD - Import Flyleaf Discography of CDs
2008 UK pressing of their successful self-titled album features three bonus tracks: acoustic versions of 'Fully Alive', 'All Around Me' and 'Cassie'. Emerging from the town of Temple, Texas comes Flyleaf. While this band is a female-fronted group with all guys doing the instrumentation, they fail to be compared to just any big name band in today's music world. This album has the producing talents of Rick Parasher (Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Default, 3 Doors Down), as well as the tracks being mixed by Kevin Shirley (The Black Crowes, Aerosmith, Silverchair, Our Lady Peace). | | Paul McCartney Good Evening New York City CDs (2009) With DVD; Digipak
Flyleaf
$15.98 Unlike its 2002 predecessor Back in the U.S., Good Evening New York City doesn't cherrypick highlights from a tour, it commemorates a specific event: the inauguration of Citi Field -- the replacement for the now-defunct Shea Stadium, where the Beatles played a legendary show in 1965 -- in the summer of 2009. The circumstances may be different -- different enough to lead to a Billy Joel cameo on "I Saw Her Standing There," the piano man returning a favor from Paul, who played at Billy's Shea-closing shows in 2008 -- and McCartney might have two strong albums of new material to draw upon, but as an album, Good Evening New York City plays a lot like Back in the U.S. with a whopping 17 of its 35 tracks shared between the two titles. More importantly, the vibe is the same, with Macca delivering an expertly balanced and sequenced set with all the skill of the old pro that he is. Apart from the inclusion of "Mrs. Vanderbilt" and "I'm Down," there are no surprises, either in song selection or performance, but no surprises doesn't mean no satisfaction, and this is plenty entertaining

| | John Fogerty Blue Ridge Rangers Rides Again CDs (2009) With DVD; Deluxe Edition
Flyleaf
$14.29 John Fogerty released his first solo CD, an album of covers on which he played all the instruments, under the name the "Blue Ridge Rangers," and he revives that concept on 2009's THE BLUE RIDGE RANGERS RIDES AGAIN. Where the first smacked of the righteous zeal of a young purist, RIDES AGAIN is a lot looser in its attack, which is reflected in the way it splits the difference between country and rockabilly classics and reflective numbers from '70s songwriters. These unexpected covers of John Prine, Delaney & Bonnie, and John Denver offer a peek at a sweeter, gentler Fogerty, a Fogerty who can also be heard on how he lays back instead of pushing ahead on Buck Owens' "I Don't Care (Just as Long as You Love Me)" and Ray Price's "I'll Be There," and even on his revamp of his own neglected swamp rocker "Change in the Weather." He can still raise an unholy ruckus however, wailing his way through Gene Simmons' rockabilly classic "Haunted House" and joyously duetting with Bruce Springsteen on the Everlys' "When Will I Be Loved." Still, RIDES AGAIN isn't a raucous rock & roll album; it's a relaxed good time, a little bit of cheerful nostalgia that's pretty charming.

| | Donny Osmond Album/To You With Love, Donny CD (2008) (Import) Remastered; United Kingdom
Flyleaf
$15.65 Packaged together here as part of the 7Ts label's series of Osbros two-fers, Donny Osmond's first two albums were all but recorded by default; even as he recorded his "Sweet and Innocent" contribution to the main band's Osmonds album, Donny did little more than dream that he might one day be unleashed across a long-player of his own. The success of that one song turned those dreams into reality, and The Donny Osmond Album was the result, a collection of songs geared almost single-mindedly to pushing the same teenybop buttons as "Sweet and Innocent" -- and to keep on pushing them across his sophomore set. These albums can be judged upon nothing more than the quality of the songs. If you enjoy the barely pubescent Donald's voice on one song, you will probably admire it on the rest, and it would not be cruel to suggest that he had nothing more to do with the creation of these records than turning up at the studio to sing what he was told. A total of 20 songs drift firmly around the axis laid down by "Sweet and Innocent" and the chart-topping "Go Away Little Girl," with a sweet cover of the Monkees' "A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You" (from To You with Love, Donny) and a couple of Everly Brothers songs about as adventurous as things get. For the rest, orchestras float, lush strings flow, and little Donny sings like an angel. ~ Dave Thompson
