Love Proge album
$6.79 The Guess Who always seemed a bit like the Canadian predecessor/counterpart to Grand Funk Railroad, but they typically fared far better with the critics because of the versatility that they possessed. That trait is very evident on this collection of hits and great songs. From the opening "These Eyes," with its orchestral strings and Zombies-like baroque pop feel to the classic AOR crunge of "American Woman," the Guess Who played a wide variety of music. It is sometimes hard to believe that the same group that brought the world the jazzy "Undun" and the CS&N-ish hippie anthem "Share the Land" is also responsible for the rocking "No Time." This 11-track collection paints a very entertaining picture of a mutli-talented band and is a perfect introduction for the casual fan. ~ Gary ...

| | Israel Iz Kamakawiwo'Ole Alone In Iz World CD (2001)
Love Proge music CDs
$13.29 While the name Israel Kamakawiwo'ole falls trippingly off few tongues, the Hawaiian singer better known as "Iz" was one of the biggest stars in his home state. Iz first came to public attention as a member of the popular Hawaiian group known as the Makaha Sons of Ni'ihau. His subsequent solo career brought even greater fame, and countless fans were saddened at his untimely death in 1997. Those who mourn his passing will be gladdened by the posthumous release of ALONE IN IZ WORLD, compiled from various recording session outtakes.
While one might expect a big, deep sound to emanate from a gargantuan-sized body like that of Iz, the hefty singer actually possessed a gorgeous, fragile tenor voice full of tenderness and delicacy. That voice is put to use here on tunes that alternate between voice-and-ukelele solo performances (Iz was no slouch on the uke) and more fully arranged tunes enhanced after the singer's death. Whether crooning in his native tongue or in English, ...

| | Todd Marcus In Pursuit Of The 9th Man CD (2006)
Love Proge album
$16.45 Todd Marcus is an unusual jazz musician in that the bass clarinet is his primary instrument, having been inspired by Eric Dolphy's recordings. A self-taught composer, he put together a group of top players from the Washington, D.C./Baltimore area for these studio sessions, which feature his potent post-bop originals. His solo is the centerpiece of the frenetic "In Pursuit of the 9th Man." The exotic "Ma'aelsalama" suggests a caravan across the Arabian desert at first, then switches to waltz time in a melancholy setting. "Prelude" is a brief, miniature duet showcasing trombonist Reginald Cyntje with Marcus providing background color. The song title "Mr. Sunshine and His Eight Bandits" is evidently an inside joke referring to Marcus and his band; the leader doubles on organ in this rather ominous sounding but very enticing composition. Todd Marcus shows a lot of promise with his exciting recording debut as a leader. ~ Ken Dryden
Bass clarinetist and composer Todd Marcus is one of the few artists worldwide to focus exclusively on the use of the bass clarinet in jazz. Jazz Times contributing writer David Adler writes, “Marcus…brings a saxophonic rigor to the bass clarinet while also generating enough sonic power to front a nine-piece ensemble…With his melodic imagination and technical aptitude on an unorthodox horn, Marcus has something truly new and personal to offer.” Self taught in jazz theory and composition, Marcus features his work in the Todd Marcus Jazz Orchestra which utilizes a 6-horn front line of bass clarinet, alto sax/flute, alto sax, tenor sax, trumpet, and trombone, plus piano, bass, and drums. Comprised of many of the area's up-and-coming musicians, the band combines the broad sounds of a large ensemble with the extended soloing typical of a quartet. The debut recording In Pursuit of the 9th Man (Hipnotic Records) features original music which Marcus arranges to highlight the rich sounds and textures of the ensemble. The music often incorporates jazz with other influences from classical to middle-eastern themes but always swings hard and features strong solos from of each member ...
