Encore
$10.19 A San Francisco-based smooth R&B act with roots in Philadelphia soul, Maze (usually billed as Maze featuring Frankie Beverly) never managed to break with a larger mainstream audience during their late-`70s to early `80s peak, but nevertheless garnered a devoted following in urban radio as one of the progenitors of the romantic, understated style known as "quiet storm." And the group's jazz-funk sophistication can certainly be felt in contemporary R&B and neo-soul styles of the ...

The downside to a success like Thriller is that it's nearly impossible to follow, but Michael Jackson approached Bad much the same way he approached Thriller -- take the basic formula of the predecessor, expand it slightly, and move it outward. This meant that he moved deeper ...

| | Very Best Of The Drifters CD (1993)
Encore
$8.45 The Drifters: Bobby Hendricks, Ben E. King, Johnny Lee Willimas, Rudy Lewis, Johnny Moore, Charles Thomas, Doc Green, Eugene Pearson, Elesbeary Hobbs, Tommy Evans (vocals). Additional personnel includes: Billy Davis, Phil Spector (guitar); Dee Dee Warwick, Dionne Warwick, Doris Troy, Cissy Houston (background vocals). Producers: Mike Stoller, Jerry Leiber, Tom Dowd, Bert Burns Compilation producer: Gary Stewart. THE VERY BEST OF THE DRIFTERS features 16 tracks recorded between 1959 and 1964. Includes historic black and white photographs and liner notes by Steve Propes. This mid-priced 16-song collection is the successor to the old Atlantic Records Drifters Golden Hits, covering the group's very best songs from "There Goes My Baby" in 1959 on up through 1964 in a more comprehensive way. Very pleasingly remastered and handy on its own terms, The Very Best of the Drifters also provides just a taste of what the post-1958 group had to offer, even in terms of singles. No one will dislike anything about it, but those who have heard even part of the two-CD package All-Time Greatest Hits & More will recognize The Very Best of the Drifters as nothing but a superficial sampler of what the Ben E. King/Rudy Lewis/Johnny Moore version of the group left behind. The Very Best of the Drifters is a great place to start, but the leap from this material to the rest of the Drifters' best is such a short one that, unless time or budgetary limitations dictate otherwise, it can be bypassed in favor of Atlantic's double-disc All-Time Greatest Hits & More. ~ Bruce Eder THE ...
| | Blossom Toes We Are Ever So Clean Vinyl LP (1967)
Encore
$31.29 Imagine the late-'60s Kinks crossed with a touch of the absurdist British wit of the Bonzo Dog Band, and you have an idea of the droll charm of Blossom Toes' debut album. Songwriters Brian Godding and Jim Cregan were the chief architects of the Toes' whimsical and melodic vision, which conjured images of a sun-drenched Summer of Love, London style. With its references to royal parks, tea time, watchmakers, intrepid balloon makers, "Mrs. Murphy's Budgerigar," and the like, it's a distinctly British brand of whimsy. It has since been revealed that sessionmen performed a lot of these orchestral arrangements, which embellished the band's sparkling harmonies and (semi-buried) guitars. But the cello, brass, flute, and tinkling piano have a delicate beauty that serves as an effective counterpoint. The group sings and plays as though they have wide grins on their faces, and the result is one of the happiest, most underappreciated relics of British psychedelia. [Ten bonus tracks were added to the 2007 Sunbeam edition.] ~ Richie Unterberger
Double LP version. Released at the height of flower power in1967, We Are Ever So Clean is the first record by the UK's Blossom Toes, widely considered to be the finest pop-psych album ever recorded. Produced by Giorgio Gomelsky (discoverer of The Rolling Stones and The Yardbirds), it's a fascinating amalgam of whimsical ...
| | U K Subs Another Kind Of Blues Vinyl LP (1979) (Import) Limited Edition; Pict; United Kingdom
Encore
$21.75 Limited edition vinyl LP picture disc pressing of the 1979 debut album from Charlie Harper and his mates. Features Subs classics like 'C.I.D.', 'Tomorrow's Girls' and more. Captain Oi.
ANOTHER KIND OF BLUES...PLUS contains 2 B-side tracks not included on the original LP. ANOTHER KIND OF BLUES is the 1979 debut for the UK Subs. It includes the tunes "C.i.d.," "Killer," and "Tomorrow's Girls." This issue marks the album's CD debut and features nine bonus songs. The U.K. Subs' debut can easily stand alongside any other punk classics released during its heyday. Musically, the Subs are similar to the early Clash, but where the Clash spit out balls of fiery rage, the Subs leaven their bile with sardonic humor. "Tomorrow's Girls" imagines a futuristic Venus who ...
