Snow Tears album
$8.99 Slayer built a rabid following with faster-than-light thrash metal, eerie, disturbing lyrics, and bassist/singer Tom Araya's screamed vocals. 1986's REIGN IN BLOOD, a blinding metal classic that clocked in at below a half hour in length and was produced by Rick Rubin, put the band on the metal map. Although Slayer was a bunch of longhairs, it wasn't uncommon to see hardcore skinheads slamming away at the band's shows. But 1988's SOUTH OF HEAVEN alienated many of Slayer's punk fans, as the group slowed their speed metal to a Black Sabbath-like crawl.
1990's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS follows its predecessor's formula. The album was embraced by metal-heads everywhere, eventually earning Slayer its first gold-certified record. The furious opening "War Ensemble" is a throwback to Slayer's earlier speed metal direction, while the album-closing title track is a murky, swarming chunk of metal. Other standouts include the chilling "Dead Skin Mask," which dealt lyrically with notorious killer Ed Gein, "Blood Red," "Expendable Youth," "Hallowed Point," and "Skeletons of Society." For fans of extreme-metal, it doesn't get any better than Slayer's SEASONS IN THE ABYSS.
Recorded at Hit City West, Hollywood Sound, California and Record Plant, Los Angeles, California.
Slayer: Tom Araya (vocals, bass); Jeff Hanneman, Kerry King (guitar); Dave Lombardo (drums).

| | Sleater-Kinney Get Up CD (1999)
Snow Tears album
$21.59 In early 1999, Sleater-Kinney issued this three-song CD single just prior to the release of The Hot Rock. And as that album's most atypical-sounding track, "Get Up" is perhaps the most surprising choice for the album's sole single. Which doesn't mean it's an ill-made decision -- the song is excellent -- but anyone familiar with the trio would probably find that song (which, at times, sounds uncomfortably similar to Sonic Youth's "Tunic") to be unrepresentative of the album as a whole. The single's two additional tracks, the otherwise unreleased "By the Time You're Twenty-Five" and "Tapping," are more representative of the band's sound, and were recorded during the studio sessions for The Hot Rock. Here, "Twenty-Five" unfortunately loses some of its blistering live energy, whereas "Tapping" finally sounds perfected after more than a year of being tested on tour. ~ Jimmy ...

| | White Coats Anywhere But Here (2008)
Snow Tears songs
$7.15 The White Coats first formed in December 2006 for a school concert; James, Rich, Alex and Rob played in front of 100+ school kids hurling abuse... what a show... However this did not affect the enthusiastic quartet as much as it probably should have, as after month of practicing and writing, the group coughed up a setlist consisting of several lifeless 'pop-punk' songs and two 'Goldfinger' covers. TWC started gigging...and even managed to play a 15 minute slot at 'The Joiners - Southampton UK'. But after a particularly dire show at the local pub 'The Alma Arms' they knew things had to change. So vowing never to gig again...they set off to write some new songs. In the early days of April 2007, Saxophonist Callum Thomas joined and finaly completed the line up of "The White Coats", giving the band a much better ska vibe, which they had longed for. This gave hope in getting more gigs at larger venues all around the South Coast of England. Currently TWC are involved with up and coming record label 'RTFM Records' and a local outfit, 'Bumblechook Promotions', run by Natasha Jones. 2007 was a great year for TWC, as it saw them build up their gigging repertoire around the Hampshire area, including four slots at the legendary 'Wedgewood-Rooms', and landing slots playing alongside bands such as 'Orange Street', 'Radio City Riot', 'Not Advised', 'Blag', Splendid Eddie and gigging buddys 'Big Topp'. TWC have high hopes for 2008, they already have shows lined up for the upcoming year, they are set to record an offical released album with 'RTFM Records', and a short summer tour is looking promising.
