Dutchess
$17.57 Of the "big four" original thrash bands (the other three being Metallica, Anthrax, and Megadeth), Slayer was the least compromising and most consistent. As such, 2009's WORLD PAINTED BLOOD recalled more than the title of Slayer's 1986 masterpiece REIGN IN BLOOD; it shared the earlier album's ferocious aggression and trademark speed metal-meets-hardcore sound. Throughout, the sound is lean and mean, with bassist/vocalist Tom Araya's vocals mixed relatively dry and upfront, giving the album a bracing, fist-to-the-face force. Jackhammer tracks such as "Hate Worldwide" and "Psychopathy Red" are short, no muss-no fuss blasts of double kick drum, minor key-riffing fury, with an unrelenting intensity ...
| | John Mayer Battle Studies CD (2009)
Dutchess
$11.18 It's no secret that John Mayer is a 21st Century Fox, wining and dining women all through tabloid headlines, so it's about time he delivered an album that traded upon his loverman persona -- and Battle Studies is that record in spades. Retaining more than a modicum of the slick, soul-blues undertones of Continuum, Mayer fashions a modern groove album, a record that maintains a smooth seductive vibe so thoroughly it spills into a one-man band cover of "Crossroads." Mayer remains somewhat of a disciple of Slowhand, but he shows an unusual interest in the big AOR stylings of Journeyman, along with Stevie Ray Vaughan's In Step, creating a coolly clean blend of synths and Strats, one that's as much about texture as it is about song.something perfectly appropriate for a make-out album like this. Sometimes, Mayer dips too heavily toward the texture, but he can't resist a good, tight melody and builds the bulk of Battle Studies upon them: the elegant "Half of My Heart," the softly soulful "Perfectly Lonely." Here, Mayer is effortlessly seductive and somewhat irresistible, and it's easy to see why the ladies love cool John.

| | Nirvana Live At Reading CD (2009)
Dutchess
$11.16 Certain concerts create a legend as soon as the final note ceases to ring. Nirvana's headlining appearance at the 1992 Reading Festival is one of these shows, a concert that arrived at precisely the right moment and stands as testament to a band at the peak of its powers...and right before things started to turn sour within the Nirvana camp. Despite the happy news of the birth of Frances Bean Cobain a mere 12 days before this August 30 festival, rumors swirled around Nirvana right up until the band hit the stage. Kurt Cobain took full advantage of these scurrilous stories, making his entrance in a hospital gown and wheelchair pushed by journalist Everett True. Cobain feebly reached for the microphone to croak out the opening lines of "The Rose," only to collapse onto the stage, milking the drama for a moment before leading Krist Novoselic and Dave Grohl through a ferocious "Breed." This impish sense of humor has been obscured over the years, lost under the weight of the band's tragic legacy, along with the fact that Nirvana could actually be fun as well as furious. Live at Reading brings all this roaring back. This is Nirvana's purest blast of rock & roll: there's a boundless, invigorating energy here and, just as importantly, there's a sense of joy to the performances, a joy that bubbles to the surface when Kurt laughs during the intro of "Sliver" but can be heard throughout the show, as the ...
| | Procol Harum Exotic Birds & Fruit CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Dutchess
$11.94 By the time of this, its eighth album, in 1974, Procol Harum had weathered the departure of several key members. The band's previous release, GRAND HOTEL, was its first after the departure of guitarist Robin Trower. EXOTIC BIRDS & FRUIT is a more polished affair and a return to form for the band.
The songs by pianist/singer Gary Brooker and lyricist Keith Reid possess the thrilling tensions that result from combining grandeur and lushness with R&B-based soulfulness. As always, drummer B.J. Wilson is a powerful yet unassuming presence, with a signature style that adds just the right amount of flair to the propulsiveness. ...
| | Daniel Kobialka Celtic Fantasy CD (1992)
Dutchess
$13.39 Daniel Kobialka takes his violin techniques, which incorporate a special warmth and subtlety of phrasing and intonation described by Arthur Fiedler, and adds a bit of Celtic charm to create an entertaining compilation in Celtic Fantasy. On "Greensleeve Fantasy," one finds Daniel Kobialka displaying his violin techniques to his interpretation of the classic, "Greensleeves." "Greensleeve Fantasy" is fashioned with smooth passages which serve to bring a tranquil beauty to the melody. The tonal color is vibrant and the depth and breadth of the strings are a thing of true beauty. "All in a Spring Morn" has a strong emotion-filled presentation. The beauty in the balance of the instruments and strength in the subtle phrases lead the listener into a virtual spring garden vibrant with odors of the season and the season's enchanting melodies. One can feel the Celtic influence immediately on "Wild Mountain Air." The melody has echoes of "Danny Boy" while taking a twist on original elements in the extensive exploration of well-crafted melodic phrases. Kobialka keeps a balance which maintains his violin's melodic presence that never overbears the rhythmic beauty. "Amazing Grace," though one may not consider this a Celtic piece, the interpretation takes on a Celtic ambience with the instrumental accentuations having a powerful Celtic presence. "Auld Lang Syne," the second piece incorporated in the "Celtic Medley," comes in seamlessly. The soothing melodic beauty is a continuation on theme, although once again not considered a Celtic piece. The amazing flute work by Katie McElrath colored masterfully by Kobialka's violin passages make for an astonishing aural adventure. "Loch Lomand," the closing piece in the "Celtic Medley," brings the listener a close examination of the classic beauty in Celtic composition. This captivating melodic piece elevates the Celtic charm of "Celtic Medley" to a magnificent height of ethnic elegance. The Bach piece, Peace in the Meadow, with it's joy-filled melody, takes on a new and pleasing elegance with Kobialka's interpretation. One gets to experience firsthand the mastery of this extremely gifted and talented violinist. The Beethoven piece, Rondo - Violin Concerto, allows Daniel Kobialka to really express himself on his violin. His presentation is meticulous and the vibrance in his phrasings elevates the piece to a new musical plateau. Daniel Kobialka has put together an album that incorporates masterful musicians expressing well thought-out arrangements. Though the Celtic theme does not come across overly impressive, some Celtic spirit does come bleeding through in key passages. This album is more of a presentation of classical music attempting to include Celtic influences into the song structure. Celtic Fantasy is an entertaining compilation of classical pieces spiced with a touch of Celtic flavor. A far cry from the craze of Riverdance, but Celtic enough to please many a lad and lassie. ~ Larry Belanger
Recently Daniel Kobialka was on a European Festival ...

| | Putumayo Presents Italia CD (2009)
Dutchess
$10.69 It may sound like it's hailing from the French café scene, but the contemporary music Putumayo pulled from the Roman circuits is entirely Italian. There's a deliberate look backward in these pieces, toward musical metaphors of la dolce vita. At the same time, there's a strong singer/songwriter movement taking hold in the country. With those influences, as well as additional bits of originality from the performers, the sound is a surprisingly casual one. The opening track, courtesy of Simone Lo Porto, incorporates a Brazilian vibe into a laid-back bit of song. Rossomalpelo sings an ode to the beach that self-consciously serves as a nice beach ballad with a chanson-style vocal delivery on the side. A bit of tango creeps into Alessandro Pitoni's contribution, along with what almost sounds like a reggae beat from Bandabardo. A very nice mix of upbeat dance and chanson-style vocal deliveries comes ...
