Stone Love album
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black Eyed Peas have returned ...
| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Stone Love CD music
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she has an uncanny gift for hitting impossible notes without seeming as if she's grandstanding. In fact, there's nary an ounce of diva in Lewis, she seems to enjoy singing for the sake of it, which helps her out on an album like Echo, where the melodies are elliptical, not catchy, designed to showcase range, not to stick in the head or evoke emotion. Similarly, the productions are designed to hop into as many different formats as possible -- rhythmic enough for clubs, glassy enough for radio -- and they ...

| | Grab Me A Gondola CD (2007)
Stone Love album
$13.25 A popular musical comedy of the mid-1950s, GRAB ME A GONDOLA starred Joan Heal as a publicity-seeking starlet in Venice. Sadly, both the musical and its leading lady have fallen into obscurity, but this original-cast recording, re-released on CD in 2007, may help restore it to its proper place in the Broadway canon.
This play's plot was inspired by publicity hunting actress Diana Dors appearing in a mink bikini at the Venice Film Festival and being thrown into a canal. The cameras that just happened to be there caught the scene before ...

| | Buford Powers Eclectic CD (2008)
Stone Love songs
$11.39 Buford Powers grew up in the community of Oakland, California with the sound of Jazz, Blues, R&B, and Gospel around him. Listening to such local standouts as Albert King, Lou Rawls, and Charles Brown, he developed a love for a broad range of male vocal stylings to go with his fondness for instrumental jazz. He soon found, through his singing with church choirs, that he too could accomplish an evocative connection with an audience. Upon discovering straight-ahead jazz at the age of 14, he then moved on to attending major festivals and shows, which he continued to do for the next four decades. Later, in the middle '70s, Buford was the sole proprietor of a nightclub in Oakland, which weekly featured local as well as international musicians. This gave him many opportunities to develop his sound.Buford later immersed himself even more deeply into the music world, and began honing his style more seriously. This is when the voices of Johnny Hartman, Arthur Prysock, and Billy Eckstein piqued his interest. As more and more ...

| | La Oreja De Van Gogh A Las Cinco En El Astoria CD (2008)
Stone Love CD music
$10.39 La Oreja de Van Gogh's fifth album, A las Cinco en el Astoria, marks a new phase in the Spanish pop/rock band's career with the introduction of a new lead vocalist, Leire Martínez, who takes the place of Amaia Montero after a decade of multi-platinum, chart-topping, international success. Montero left the band in 2007, a year-and-a-half after the release of Guapa (2006), the latest in a line of excellent albums by the band. Reportedly there were bad relations between Montero and guitarist Pablo Benegas, the band's primary lyricist, and indeed a palpable tension between the two could be heard on Guapa. For instance, "Muñeca de Trapo," the album's biggest hit, was driven by a surging guitar riff that nearly overtakes the multi-tracked vocals of Montero on the chorus -- as if the guitarist and vocalist were fighting over who gets to shine in the spotlight. In contrast, there are only a few propulsive rockers on A las Cinco en el Astoria ("El Ultimo Vals," "Más," "Sola" -- all great songs), a scaled-back album that returns La Oreja de Van Gogh to their roots, back when they were a calmer, simpler band. There's no getting past it; in so many ways the addition of Martínez in the place of Montero changes the band. Unlike Montero, who was an iconic, experienced frontwoman with a strong personality -- and a favorite of many fans, no doubt -- Martínez is at this early point a pretty face without a clear-cut persona. Though, prior to her performance here, all most people know about the young woman is that she was the sixth-place runner-up on the 2007 season of the reality show Factor X, it's evident Martínez is a gifted singer with a strong voice who brings a contemporary sense of style to the band. She may not contribute any songwriting -- unlike ...
