DIVE DEEP is the second studio album to be recorded without Skye Edwards, the lead singer who helped catapult Morcheeba to the upper strata of the trip-hop echelon on its first four albums. Unlike its predecessor, however (which showcased singer Daisy Marty), DIVE DEEP features several vocalists, including Judie Tzuke, Thomas Dybdahl, Cool Calm Pete, and Manda (neither Edwards not Marty make an appearance),
Old-school fans might miss Edwards's cool diva vocals, but the Godfrey brothers have mixed organic sounds, expansive synths, lounge, R&B, and pop on DIVE DEEP, maintaining plenty of Morcheeba's classic vibe. Whether it's the lead single, "Enjoy the Ride," which turns on a moody, downtempo groove; the ethereal Britpop of "Riverbed"; the Nick Drake-esque flavor of "Run Honey Run"; or the head-nodding hip-hop of "One Love Karma," Morcheeba prove themselves as eclectic and appealing as ever.
Morcheeba: Ross Godfrey (guitar, guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, banjo, piano, Fender Rhodes piano, Clavinet, Hammond b-3 organ, Wurlitzer organ, synthesizer, bass guitar); Paul Godfrey (drums, drum machine, sound effects, scratches).
Additional personnel: Thomas Dybdahl (vocals, guitars, acoustic guitar, piano, bass guitar); Bradley Burgess (vocals, guitars, bass guitar); Judie Tzuke, Cool Calm Pete (vocals); The Mak Of All Trades (flute); Dan Goldman (Fender Rhodes piano, synthesizer, bass guitar); Martin Carling (drums); Manda (background vocals).
Uncut (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "There's a smooth, unhurried feel about DIVE DEEP that only ears of frontline experience can achieve..." Q (Magazine) (p.107) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he calm, luxurious and emotional DIVE DEEP is their most satisfying outing since they stopped being famous." Paste (magazine) (p.62) - "On DIVE DEEP, the duo reinvents itself as a producer-driven act with revolving vocalists..." URB (Magazine) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[T]he group's sixth studio album still bears their trademark sound, though the easy melodies and classy, downtempo grooves are augmented with a fresh smattering of acoustic instrumentation, giving this endeavor a much earthier feel." Dive Deep songs
$16.65 The sheer toughness -- and overall derivative -- nature of Killing Floor's debut album, issued six months after Led Zeppelin's debut in 1969 on the Spark label, is a wondrous contrast to the overly slick treatment American blues were given by British artists. All of these tunes, with the exception of one, are revamped versions of songs from the blues canon with different words. The lone "cover" in the set was written by Willie Dixon titled "Woman You Need Love," the tune Zep ripped for "Whole Lotta Love." Despite the ...

Dive Deep album
$19.79 The first solo album from Fleetwood Mac singer/songwriter Daniel David Kirwan has the future producer for Human League and Buzzcocks, Martin Rushent, utilizing those skills here, as well as engineering. The sound is crystal clear, and a feather in the cap for Rushent as well as Kirwan. It starts off with an uncharacteristic "Ram Jam City," which has more Lindsey Buckingham sounds than one would expect, especially since the two guitarists come from ...

Dive Deep album
$18.99 Born in Woodbridge, Virginia and growing up in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Erik Bledsoe has always been challenged by his parents Christ-like example since he was little. On October 18, 1983 Bledsoeâs father led him to Christ over a bowl of macaroni and cheese and a hot dog when Bledsoe prompted his dad with the question "what does the word salvation mean?" Being raised in a home where faith in God is the utmost priority has rooted a devotion and trust deep within Bledsoe that is reflected in him today. After high school Bledsoe went to the Word of Life Bible Institute where he finished the Biblical Studies major. âMy Father instilled in me at a very young age a love for the scriptures. He helped me study and I taught my first Sunday School class while I was in the Third Gradeâ recalls Bledsoe, âso Bible college for me was the first, most important step.â Coming from a musical family, music has been a part of Bledsoeâs life almost since birth. In the fall of 1998 Bledsoe transferred ...

Dive Deep songs
$9.29 Flutist and whistle player Sarah Bauhan was raised in the Monadnock region of New Hampshire, where there is a longstanding tradition of folk music and dancing. Specifically, it's the contra dance that defines the region. A 19th century American folk dance and cousin to the square dance, contra dancing is driven principally by upbeat jigs and reels, performed on instruments such as fiddles and flutes. It's the latter that Bauhan plays with virtuosic skill throughout Untamed Grasses (Alcazar), her second album. It's a collection of both traditional and original instrumental material, and includes reels and ballads that display at every turn the ...
| | Darren Farris Psychopathic Issues CD (2008)
Dive Deep album
$8.69 Growing up in a musical family, Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter Darren Farrisâs path seemed to be cut for a musical life. Darren's mother, Lois Faye, was the lead singer of The Waylighters, a popular touring band in the 70's. A young Farris was never left out of the band. "Oh yeah, I really had little choice but to love music," Farris explains, "There was always practicing, writing music, and musicians [coming] in and out of our home."Farris describes being raised in a rock band atmosphere. "Music was just all around me- acid rock, power-pop, country, and even spiritual. My mom was playing during some pivotal changes in pop music, so I was exposed to all of that," Farris says, "Every time a new single would be hot on the charts, we would have to rush out to the record store and pick up the 45 (rpm record). They would play them over and over, until they got it down."After being raised the first five years of his life in the heart of Chicago, moving to the more rural setting of Tennessee gave Farris a wide cultural perspective to draw from. "Yeah, I have always had to deal with the âfish out of water syndromeâ," Farris says of an early childhood of moving from place to place. About 70 miles outside Memphis, Darren was heavily influenced by the wide array of music being pumped out on the Memphis airwaves. He writes about the glory days of cutting school to hang out with local blues session musicians such as Alabama Smith on the world famous Beale Street. "I had this very small circle of friends and we were all into rock and roll and understanding the roots of it [rock music]. We did so many crazy things, it's a wonder I am here to tell the story," Farris muses of a storybook-like wild youth, including anecdotes of his growing up years and adolescence in the autobiographical song âPart of Somethingâ.Darren's new album âPsychopathic Issuesâ is a testament to always taking the road less traveled and not looking back. ...
