| | Headlights Some Racing, Some Stopping CD Headlights Discography of CDs
Indie rockers Headlights make lovely melodic pop that draws on new wave, 1960s pop, shoegaze, the Velvet Underground, and the indie tunesmithery of contemporaries like Belle and Sebastian. SOME RACING, SOME STOPPING, Headlights' second full- length release, is a beautifully realized statement of the band's aesthetic. Charming boy-girl harmonies, propulsive guitar riffs, swirling synths, and a penchant for catchy hooks mark this disc as an accessible and compulsively listenable gem.
Recording information: The Farmhouse.
Personnel: John Owen (guitar); Mary Weingartner (violin, viola); Rachel Deitkus (violin); Nick Sanborn (accordion); Jeff Helgesen (trumpet); Jerry DeJong (musical saw).
Audio Mixer: Brett Sanderson.
Spin (p.102) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[With] classic rock sounds. The boy-boy-girl threesome finds grace in simple accoutrements -- strings and bells tickle the Rilo Kiley-esque 'On April 2,' while 'doo doo doos' color the title track." Uncut (p.100) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Tristan Wraight and Erin Fein's boy-girl vocals sit atop a Spector-sized wall of sound on 'On April 2', while 'Catch Them All' is like Belle & Sebastian backed by the London Symphony Orchestra..." CMJ - "[M]ost of these 10 tracks are charmingly uptempo and their sweetness is contagious." Paste (magazine) (p.75) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Headlights' second full-length inspires awe at how deftly the band employs bells, organ swells, orchestral flourishes and stacked, co-ed 'oohs' and 'aahs' for instant indie-pop bliss." Some Racing, Some Stopping album
$11.65 EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME is the debut release on Sub Pop from Seattle's Band of Horses. Matt Brooke and Ben Bridwell have abandoned the melancholic slow-core of their previous band Carissa's Weird for a brighter, more straightforward indie rock sound with obvious roots in Neil Young's ragged folk and progressive indie bands like Built to Spill.
EVERYTHING ALL THE TIME benefits from strong songwriting, and the winding, yearning tenor of Bridwell, ...

| | National Boxer CD (2007)
Some Racing, Some Stopping music CDs
$9.95 On 2007's BOXER, the National's second full-length album for the venerable Beggars Banquet label, the Brooklyn-based indie-rock act follows up the lauded ALLIGATOR with another round of melancholy guitar-driven tunes. Led by deep-voiced vocalist Matt Berninger, who often sounds hung-over yet disarmingly articulate, the band excels at brooding mid-tempo songs, as exemplified by the world-weary "Fake Empire," which combines political and personal themes, and "Mistaken for Strangers," a track that recalls NYC peers Interpol, thanks in part to the punchy approach of shared producer Peter Katis.
And while his presence isn't immediately apparent, indie hero Sufjan Stevens contributes piano to two tracks ("Racing Like a Pro" and "Ada"), adding to the National's increasingly expansive aesthetic, which also incorporates strings ...
| | Caribou Andorra CD (2007)
Some Racing, Some Stopping songs
$11.99 Dan Snaith's project, Caribou, has always displayed a great reverence for the splashy opulence of '60s psychedelic-pop. If earlier albums, UP IN FLAMES and MILK OF HUMAN KINDNESS, borrowed liberally from his influences--sounding much like a panoply of carefully crafted snippets from the most blissed-out moments of pop music's past 30 years--ANDORRA polishes out the rough edges to reveal actual songs. Despite the newfound emphasis on songwriting cohesion, the album revels in deep layers of textural embellishment. Mixing ...
| | Jens Lekman Night Falls Over Kortedala CD (2007)
Some Racing, Some Stopping album
$12.19 In addition to being one of the best albums of 2005, the Secretly Canadian compilation OH YOU'RE SO SILENT JENS proved Swedish singer-songwriter Jens Lekman to be an artist of unusual talent, wit, poignancy, and charm. Those qualities continue to flourish on Lekman's 2007's studio effort NIGHT FALLS OVER KORTEDALA.
NIGHT FALLS is less lo-fi than the artist's previous work; in fact, the production is downright lush, featuring full-bodied arrangements that drip pop sunshine a la Burt Bacharach. But the central focus is Lekman's songs, which are as quaint, moving, pitch-perfect, and beautifully crafted as anything ...
