On LUCKY, Nada Surf's third album since it reemerged on the Barsuk label as unlikely alt-rock survivors, the Brooklyn-based power-pop band presents another well-honed set of immediately engaging songs. Alternating between gentle melancholy moments (the introspective "Beautiful Beat") and bright bursts of melody (the twinkling "Here Goes Something"), LUCKY is a testament to the ensemble's considerable songwriting abilities, as well as frontman Matthew Caws's sincere guy-next-door charm. While those who remember Nada Surf's gimmicky mid-'90s single "Popular" may still be reluctant to follow the band's latter-day phase, those who do will be rewarded with keen and pleasantly understated pop tunes.
If Fountains of Wayne create snarky power pop songs for Friday evenings, then Nada Surf is the band for Sunday afternoons. They've grown more emotive over the years, having replaced the sarcasm of 1996's "Popular" with a grown-up focus on pop songcraft and mellow instrumentation. And they've been lucky, too -- lucky in that their audience has remained, their (once rocky) label situation has steadied, and their chops have improved. Appropriately enough, Lucky sounds like a celebration of the band's good fortune. Somber songs are still present, most notably the plaintive closer "The Film Did Not Go 'Round," but most of the album is dominated by steady, mid-tempo pop/rock. Nada Surf spent the first half of the 2000s making subdued rainy day records, which makes Lucky seem downright sunny (if not supernova bright) in comparison. There are some particularly luminous moments here, including the back-to-back punch of "Whose Authority" and "Beautiful Beat," where the songs immediately unleash their hooks and sustain that energy for minutes. "Beautiful beat, get me out of this mess; beautiful beat, lift me up from distress," sings Matthew Caws, sounding restless and happy at the same time, as if he knows his anxiety can be quelled at any moment by the sounds of his brightest record to date. But Lucky never gets lost in that sort of happiness. Nada Surf has seen too much over the past 15 years not to be cautious, and the leadoff track "See These Bones" warns younger bands to be similarly careful with their careers. "Look alive, see these bones," the lyrics advise. "What you are now, we were once -- and just like we are, you'll be dust." As the song ends, three different melodies weave themselves together, all of them instantly memorable and worthy of being a chorus in their own right. So even when Lucky tries to turn down the glow, it still radiates with the oomph of a solid power pop release, making Nada Surf's fifth album a fine finale for a weekend well-spent. ~ Andrew LeaheySpin (p.96) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Nada Surf face everyday life's cacophony with a pleasant, unfaltering, even sugary approach."
Uncut (p.96) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "Throughout, Nada Surf have the ambition and the chops to realise it."
Alternative Press (p.144) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "LUCKY is full of intricate melodies and bridges, intense while at the same time awash with the delicate touch of human experience."
Q (Magazine) (p.108) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "['Weightless' is] a delicious coupling of joyful guitar riffs and Matthew Caws's warm falsetto..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.106) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] deftly crafted cat's cradle of chiming, corroded guitars, soaring strings, and Matthew Caws' reedy, vulnerable vocals carrying melodies akin to sun breaking through clouds."
Harp (magazine) (p.101) - "[I]t will bring a smile to the face of anyone who likes a simple, well-crafted tune."
The Word (magazine) (p.107) - "With their sumptuous sound, ringing melodies and Caws' mellifluous voice, this trio aren't a million miles away from Coldplay or Travis."

When you listen to their previous "the weight is a gift", it was impossible to say their next one would be a such quality. Almost every track is like a little movie that catches you for a few minutes. Certainly one of the best albums of 2008.

Back in the mid 1990s, when post-rock dominated the indie landscape, instrumental bands offered a sonic vision beyond what they saw to be the tired rock clichés of 4/4 time and G-C-D riffs, but very often negated the simple energy that makes rock so vital in the process. On their second full-length ALL OF A SUDDEN I MISS EVERYONE, Explosions in the Sky do not make such mistakes. The Austin quartet (yes, there are only four of them generating all this sound) take cues from the post-rock era but apply an energetic, improvisational rock approach full of relentless tension and bursts of beauty. ...

International pressing of ttheir fourth album. The Seldom Seen Kid is a welcome return from the band, driven by a thunderous riff that reminds listeners of Elbow’s love of the heavy as well as the delicate. Produced by keyboard player, Craig Potter, the album is the follow up to 2005’s universally acclaimed Leaders Of The Free World. The lyrical core of The Seldom Seen Kid sees Guy Garvey address the key questions of life. The big themes of love and loss become the central ...

Slick Dogs And Ponies
Louis Xiv Slick Dogs And Ponies CD  (2008) Edited

Lucky
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
The sophomore effort from San Diego rockers Louis XIV proves that the taut, glam-tinged rock of THE BEST LITTLE SECRETS ARE KEPT, the band's debut, was no fluke. SLICK DOGS AND PONIES delivers more of Louis XIV's edgy, playful sound. The lead-off single "Guilt by Association," a catchy romp with dancey punch, is a perfect example.
But Louis XIV has pushed its boundaries a bit, too. With composer David Campbell providing string arrangements, SLICK DOGS has a lush, expansive sound. In combination with the band's stylish rock, the orchestral flavor gives a delicious twist to this fine follow-up, one that will have fans putting their copies on repeat.
Louis XIV's first album was a sleazy, breezy dose of AC/DC-inspired rawk & roll that put over its swagger with a cheesy wink and a playfully sexy bump and grind. It was the kind of record Brian Johnston might put on when he's sitting down at home to relax; totally silly and a lot of fun. Their second album Slick Dogs and Ponies is a decidedly darker effort with a greasy strand of evil congealing right below the surface. The sound of the album is much fuller and less punchy, songs are weighted down by gloomy strings, vocals are framed by vocal choirs, and the raunchy guitars that propelled the first album are pushed to the background. It's a more mature and substantial sound, but the record isn't quite as bouncey and goofy as Best Little Secrets Are Kept. The lyrics are less fun, too. The songs tell tales of modern life gone wrong, derailed by sordid sex, drug use, and all sorts of unpleasantness. "Stalker" is grimy and might leave you wanting a shower, or at least a quick spin of a Donovan record, to make you feel clean again. "Hopesick" is a the kind of weary, beaten ballad you'd expect from an arena rock band on their seventh album; it sounds tattered and desperate, like they can barely even function as a band. The moments of rocked-out swagger are still here, but are ultimately drowned out by a musical and lyrical heaviness that turns the album into a downer. Of course, there's no reason a band can't make a depressing and bleak album if they want to. ~ Tim Sendra
