"This was my introduction to the totally original and wonderfully imaginative vocal artist, Ravenna Michalsen. Dharmasong is her second CD, a collection of eight original and ancient dharma-inspired songs. (Her first CD, Bloom, came out about two years ago.) This is definitely not the kind of namby-pamby wallpaper music you hear while getting a massage at your local spa. It’s gutsy, powerful, colorful, and as deeply devotional singing as you’ll ever hear. Think Buddhist gospel music and that’s what Ravenna does. Her pure and clear voice is skillfully combined with a lush and atmospheric soundscape, and the sparse textures help to spotlight the breadth of her emotional range." -Wildmind.org"The adjective 'meditative' might seem too appropriate for an album of Buddhist-inspired songs, but there's really no better way to describe this effortless, enchanting music. With an absolutely impeccable sense of phrasing an pure, confident vocals, Michalsen inhabits her sometimes a cappella music with integrity and grace..." -New Haven Advocate"LAST YEAR, we added an entry to The Worst Horse's Link-o-Pedia, for a Buddhist songwriter and performer listed simply as "Ravenna." That entry said: She lists her influences as Tegan and Sara, Joan Baez, Milarepa, and Sakyong Mipham, among others. Half-acoustic, half-electronic; just right for the wee small hours. But the 28 year-old Ravenna -- full name, Ravenna Michalsen -- is not the kind of musician for whom the word "influences" can be seen as a polite way of saying "the people who I rip off." Instead, she seems to take the best of those influences -- including an experimental, "let's try it" spirit -- and puts it all not only into her work but into her life. Her new, self-released CD, Dharmasong, reflects that spirit..." -theworsthorse.org Ravenna Michalsen Dharmasong Songs | 1. | Ki Ki So So |

Sam Cooke's death in 1964 left a huge void in the world of soul music not filled until Al Green's breakthrough in the early '70s. Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent cross-over success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS ...

| | Elliot Lawrence Swings Cohn & Kahn CD (2001)
Dharmasong songs
$9.89 Elliot Lawrence, who was born in 1925, formed a big band at the very end of the swing era, much too late to make a strong impression. A fine pianist/arranger/composer, Lawrence primarily wrote for radio and television. In the 1950s he recorded quite frequently for such labels as Decca, King, Columbia, Groove, Vik, Camden, and, particularly, Fantasy, cutting six records for the latter label during 1955-1957 with big bands. This CD has all of the music from the LP Swinging at the Steel Pier, five cuts from Plays Tiny Kahn and Johnny Mandel Arrangements (just the Kahn charts), and a few selections from Plays for Swinging Dancers and Dream on...Dance On. The music, which features arrangements by Tiny Kahn, Al Cohn, Johnny Mandel, and Gerry Mulligan, is essentially updated swing along with some melodic dance music. Among the key soloists along the way are Zoot Sims (whose tenor is heard on the first five selections), Al Cohn, trumpeter Nick Travis, trombonist Eddie Bert, and Lawrence himself, who sometimes sounds a little like Claude Thornhill. ...

| | Jay Orlando In A Mello Tone CD (2008)
Dharmasong CD music
$16.45 "The Sexiest Sax In Show Biz" That's how saxophone virtuoso JAY ORLANDO is known to his legion of fans. And he can be counted on to live up his billing ar every performance.Orlando, who has always had a mystical faith in his ability to weave sheer musical magic with his golden sax, has become the high priest of the instrument. Jay does with the sax what Tom Jones and Elvis Presley do with a song - frenetic body gyrations and all. The whole atmosphere of the room is charged with electric excitement the minute his sax goes into action. Crowds flood his immediate area, whooping it up in a heavenly frenzy that would create havoc at an African voodoo convention. ORLANDO'S sax sexiness isn't his only musical trademark. A true aura of saxophobia pervades any room offering his electrifying wares. He's richly endowed with superb tone and flawless technique. His mass appeal and unique sax styling his extraordinarily dexterous playing, his creativity, his magnetic personality, and his impeccable musicianship readily communicate themselves to his rapt listeners. It's no wonder then that ORLANDO'S sensational sax work, featuring great individuality and tremendous lift, has been likened to the legendary instrumental soloists of the big band era - musical giants who spellbound their audiences with their powerhouse performances. One of their worshipful fans in his teenage days, ORLANDO is re-living their rich musical experiences with his magnificent sax. But Jay has added an extra touch. He happens to be the hardest working instrumentalist in the world of music. Gifted with an incredibly boundless supply of energy. ORLANDO'S remarkable sounds are never stilled throughout each of his action packed and thrill - studded shows. His audiences, invariably keyed to a high state of excitement and explosive emotionalism, seemingly appear more exhausted than ORLANDO. Many shake their heads in disbelief at JAY'S sustained sax excursions and amazing bursts of energy equivalent to that of a carload of tigers. ORLANDO, who was born in Detroit, Michigan of Italian parentage was hooked on music at an early age. While other kids on his block played baseball and stick ball and went swimming. Jay spent man enraptured hours listening to big band Detroit's Fox Theatre. On many occasion he would ...
