Filles Fragiles album
$12.09 The very first moments of Rodrigo y Gabriela's sophomore effort, 11:11, hit the listener cold in the face, and not just because of the amazing guitar playing. Sure, it's there, but it's what anyone who heard the duo's astonishing debut would expect. No, it's the sound of the record: immediate, forceful, crystalline; it's in-your-face compelling and ...
| | Afro-Cuban All Stars Toda Cuba Le Gusta CD (1997)
Filles Fragiles CD music
$15.89 A TODOS CUBA LE GUSTA was nominated for a 1998 Grammy Award for Best Tropical Latin Performance.
A lively, spontaneous record that manages to sound both relaxed and forceful at the same time, A Toda Cuba Le Gusta shows off the talents of many of Cuba's elder statesmen of Afro-Cuban jazz. Over gently pulsating conga grooves and low-register ostinatos, such luminaries as pianist Ruben Gonzalez and singer Manuel "Puntillita" Licea float dramatic melodies, as their solo contributions are answered by brass section chords as thick and sweet as cane syrup. Although it is Ruben Gonzalez' presence on this album that gets the most attention, his tendency towards relentless chromaticism becomes tiresome early on, especially when it is contrasted with the exquisite phrasing and tremulous beauty of singers ...

| | Super XX Man X CD (2006)
Filles Fragiles songs
$11.99 Perhaps the only singer/songwriter to make the Mountain Goats' John Darnielle look like a careerist, Super XX Man (aka Scott Garred, formerly of the Pacific Northwest's late lamented Silver Scooter) has maintained a similar career path to that of his better-known doppelgänger: a series of creaky, lo-fi cassettes and vinyl singles at first, adding other instruments and better sound quality from one album to the next. Garred and Darnielle even have similar day jobs, as a music therapist and a psychiatric nurse, respectively. (Interestingly, the late Kevin Coyne, whose often-harrowing 1970s work sounds very much like a precursor to both acts, held both of those jobs himself.) However, as the Mountain Goats have steadily grown in indie-darling prominence, Super XX Man has until now stayed comparatively low-key. However, X sounds like Super XX Man's musical coming-out party. Garred's tenth album under this project name -- almost all of his albums have Roman numerals for names -- X is a greatest-hits album of sorts, featuring new recordings of songs from previous albums, made with the current full-band lineup co-led by his accordionist ...

| | Pan De Sal Bread Is Rising CD (2007)
Filles Fragiles album
$10.09 With inspiration taken from the far corners of the earth, a small group from Las Vegas has set outto unite the world’s sounds within their songs. Pan De Sal is a world-beat experimental pop band thatformed in the winter of 2006 as a collective where different musicians from many genres can cometogether to create music not found anywhere else. The core group – Sheila Hall (aka Orange Sheila), Judi Brown (of Love Pentagon), and JeffMadlambayan (aka The Doodler) – doesn’t hesitate to use whatever instruments they could get their hands on to contributeto their sound, whether it is a set of turntables, a bass guitar, synth pads, or a didgeridoo.Pan De Sal’s live shows come with an energetic chaos that draws the audience in to their spontaneous onstage tactics, often giving out maracas, shakers, and other little noisemakers for onlookers to participate.“There were way more people onstage than necessary, like it was 4 a.m. in someone’s livingroom, and someone had the drunken idea for a jam sesh,” described Liz Armstrong, Las Vegas Weekly, of the Pan De Sal’s first show.Their combination of textures, ambience, and schoolyard chants sculpts the band’s overallpackage. Their ...
