By 1996, guitar solo-heavy instrumental albums were looked down upon by the majority of rock fans -- as many had moved on to focusing on artists who put the importance of songwriting over shredding. However, you have to give Tony MacAlpine credit -- he didn't stray too far from his prior musical path on his solo release that year, Violent Machine. Featuring plenty of MacAlpine's six-string heroics, Violent Machine easily could have been released in 1989, and probably would have done battle with Flying in a Blue Dream in Guitar World magazine's year-end poll -- as evidenced by such selections as the album-opening title track, plus "Shoe Shine Cyber Boy" and "Mr. Destructive." But unlike many of the other similarly styled guitarists that MacAlpine has been compared to over the years, he is also a highly skilled pianist, and listeners get a glimpse of this on "Chopin Etude #12 Opus 10." And there are also a few other non-metal detours along the way, including the jazzy melodicism of "Sophisticated Domination," as well as the almost new age-ish "Carolina Blue." Limited edition release of their 2000 album with a bonus CD including 6 live tracks, 'Right Here In My Arms', 'Your Sweet 666', 'Poison Girl', 'Death is in Love With Us', 'Wicked Game' and 'Join Me', all songs were recorded live at the Werchter festival in July of 2000. Despite having releases available mostly on import, the Finnish metal band HIM has inspired an incredibly loyal cult following in the United States. HIM's dynamic music is based on an infectious blend of metallic riffs and goth keyboards. Mixing hard rock anthems with softer ballads, the band allows Valo to wax poetic (almost psychotic) about tragic love ('Join Me in Death'), romantic fatalism ('I Love You [Prelude to Tragedy]'), and monstrous obsession ('Right Here in My Arms'). Never Too Late is best remembered today as drummer John Coghlan's final album with the band he'd served since the early '60s. The bulk of the set, however, was actually cut during the same sessions that produced the previous year's Just Supposin', although it's a struggle to say which of the two came out with the better songs.
