Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes star in this $13 million-grossing movie about the Duchess of Devonshire, who marries into one of Britain's most powerful families. Extras include featurettes and costume diary. After PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and ATONEMENT, Keira Knightley continues her reign as the queen of the period film with this 18th-century costume drama. The corset-clad actress stars as Georgiana Spenser, the Duchess of Devonshire. With her marriage to the duke (Ralph Fiennes), Georgiana achieves an impressive level of fame as Britons follow both her clothing style and her political advice. But even celebrity and wealth can't act as a salve in her marriage to the boring, boorish duke. When he begins to flaunt his affairs, Georgiana is tempted to return to a teenage crush, Charles Grey (Dominic Cooper of THE HISTORY BOYS), to the anger of her husband and her mother (Charlotte Rampling, SWIMMING POOL).
Fiennes's portrayal of the duke ranks roughly with his Lord Voldemort on a scale of beastly behavior, but the acclaimed actor manages to give him a level of humanity that far surpasses what he deserves. THE DUCHESS focuses on the lack of power possessed by Georgiana and, in fact, all women of her time, and the duke is the primary agent of her suppression. As she has done with other period films from the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN series to KING ARTHUR, Knightley brings spirit to the role, as well as a regal carriage that perfectly fits the detailed costumes by Michael O'Connor. Fans of history-based drama--Georgiana was real-life royalty who is found in the genealogy of Princess Diana--will find much to like in this film, which boasts impressive locations, lush costumes, and forbidden love.
Duchess Reviews: "[Fiennes] develops a beautiful, wordless vocabulary of hurt, frustration, sadism, lust...and unanalyzed pain for his Duke....The actor creates particulars of time, space, class, and personality with one crook of a finger, one twist of a wrist." -- Grade: B-- Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly "THE DUCHESS is a handsome historical film, impeccably mounted....It is about hard realists, constrained in a stifling system and using whatever weapons they can command. It is rather fascinating on that level..."-- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times "Knightley, who's in virtually every scene...rises to the challenge with more skill and emotional range than she's hitherto been given credit for."-- Philip Kemp, Sight and Sound 3 stars out of 4 -- "[T]he film belongs to Knightley. There's a fire in her eyes that won't be extinguished, and it keeps us in her corner....It's Knightley who makes THE DUCHESS a royal treat."-- Peter Travers, Rolling Stone 4 stars out of 5 -- "The cast and period are immaculately turned out, and events roll at an assured, stately pace..."-- Simon Crook, Empire "[T]he film, impeccably shot by cinematographer Gyula Pados on location in a variety of British stately homes, is as handsomely mounted and beautifully costumes as anything you could as for."-- Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times "[E]ntertainingly and sumptuously told....The cinematography is stunning, with gorgeous costumes and a sweeping score. All of this is capped by compelling key performances."-- Claudia Puig, USA Today Duchess | List Price | $29.99 (You save $6.84) | | Studio | Paramount Home Entertainment | | Orig Year | 2008 | | All Time Sales Rank | 69112 | | CD Universe Part number | 7602417 | | Catalog number | 140074 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Dec 27, 2008 | | Rating | PG-13 (MPAA) | | Rating Reason | for sexual content, brief nudity and thematic material. | | Additional Info | Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled | | Movie Details | Color; Widescreen; Dubbed; Subtitled; Sensormatic |

$26.59 The sequel to the 2005 blockbuster FANTASTIC FOUR, RISE OF THE SILVER SURFER finds the Marvel superhero quartet of Reed Richards (Ioan Gruffudd), Sue Storm (Jessica Alba), Johnny Storm (Chris Evans), and Ben Grimm (Michael Chiklis) facing an extraterrestrial threat in the form of the title character (played by Doug Jones and voiced by Laurence Fishburne), an enigmatic being whose presence on Earth could signal the planet's end. Amidst the ensuing action, Reed and Sue attempt to tie the knot, and an old foe (Dr. Doom, portrayed by Julian McMahon) waits in the wings, allowing for plenty of levity and drama.
An improvement on the original movie, this FANTASTIC FOUR outing, once again directed by Tim Story, gets much of its verve from the Silver Surfer himself. Played by Jones, an actor best known for his dual roles in PAN'S LABYRINTH, the Surfer is more than just CGI sheen, with subtle movements that seem truly alien and a voice of supreme gravitas, courtesy of Fishburne. Reed and Sue deal with wedding woes, while the fiery Johnny (aka The Human Torch) and a rock-solid Ben (The Thing) provide an extra dose of humor in a power-switching plot, making the film much lighter than other Marvel offerings and ideal summer viewing for the tween set.
The enigmatic, intergalactic herald, The Silver Surfer, comes to Earth to prepare it for destruction. As the Silver Surfer races around the globe wreaking havoc, Reed, Sue, Johnny and Ben must ...

$15.65 Despite his weak eyesight, Rudyard Kipling's son Jack was determined to serve in the military during World War I. Unlike many parents, Kipling was adamant that his son have the opportunity to see action and uphold the values that were a constant motif in his writing. By way of influence Jack finally made it to the front, never to return, and Kipling would spend years of his life trying to uncover his son's fate. This Masterpiece Theatre production is the story of one aspect of the writer's life that was more tragic than anything depicted in his adventure stories. Daniel Radcliffe takes off Harry Potter's robes to star in this serious drama.
In 1914, Rudyard Kipling (David Haig) is at the peak of his literary fame and is the British Empire's greatest supporter. With World War I fast approaching, Kipling's son, Jack (Daniel Radcliffe), is determined to serve his country but finds himself rejected due to his extremely poor eyesight. When his father uses his influence to land Jack a commission in the Irish Guards, Kipling's wife, Caroline (Kim Cattrall), is bitterly upset, failing to see the glory ...

$15.59 Mysterious, troubled, and brilliant--Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky created an emotional array of compositions that captured both his inner demons as well as the time period he lived through. While facts about his life, and particularly his homosexual affairs, are difficult to come by, this dramatic interpretation is blended with a documentary approach led by acclaimed composer Charles Hazlewood. It's both a creative imagining of what Tchaikovsky's turmoil might have been like as well as a detailed analysis of what made his music so special.

Duchess review
Director Tristan Bauer marks the centenary of Argentinean literary icon Jorge Luis Borges with THE BOOKS AND THE NIGHT, a graceful and eerie cinematic portrait of the writer, his work and his world. With a fluid mix of fiction and documentary, Bauer evokes Borges's penetrating and unique vision of the world, filled with labyrinths, enigmas, and doppelgangers. Recreating several of Borges' most celebrated short stories including THE BOOK OF SAND about an infinite book with no beginning or end and THE OTHER, in which the author encounters his young self on a park bench in Argentina, THE BOOKS AND THE NIGHT uses newsreel footage, computer animation, and narrative passages in a sweeping mixture reminiscent of Borges own lyrical style. Actor Walter Santa Ana plays the aging and blind Borges, whose voice over gently leads the entire film, from reminiscences about his youth, lost in the paradise of his father's library, the political upheavals of Peron-era Argentina, to his bittersweet triumph of receiving the stewardship of the Argentinean National library just as he became blind (hence the title, THE BOOKS AND THE NIGHT). With austere imagery and labyrinthine knots of personal narrative, history, and fantasy, the universe of ...

Duchess review
$19.35 With LOOK, accomplished screenwriter and director Adam Rifkin (THE DARK BACKWARD, DETROIT ROCK CITY) takes the modern world's infatuation with surveillance technology to a disarming new level. After opening the film with a jarring title card that explains just how many surveillance cameras exist in our society, Rifkin then goes on to prove it by using surveillance camera footage exclusively to tell his multifaceted story (artificially constructed, of course, but convincing nonetheless). What follows is an acerbic commentary on America in which a wide spectrum of citizens are captured in a series of unsettling, uncomfortable, sometimes hilarious, and ultimately dramatic situations. They include two cop killers on the lam, two bored convenience store clerks, a philandering husband, a sex-addicted clothing store manager, a high school teacher and the student who is out to seduce him, a nerdy office worker who is constantly harassed by his coworkers, a devastated mother whose daughter is abducted, and the mysterious abductor himself. Rifkin ingeniously uses his conceit as a way to comment on how depraved our society has become, yet he also uses humor to keep things from becoming too bleak and dour. As hidden camera after hidden camera captures the glaring foibles of these intersecting lives, we become further embroiled in the dramas at hand. The result is an unsettling portrait of a world at its nastiest, where good intentions become bad ones, and in which happy endings occur, albeit with crushingly ironic twists.
There are an estimated 30 million surveillance cameras in the U.S. On any given day, the average American is captured approximately 200 times. Every one of us is ...
