Louisville, Kentucky's own The City Limits are here with their debut album, "Connected". A refreshing blend of soul, traditional gospel, hard rock and straight-forward worship music, "Connected" is fully capable of becoming your new favorite CD. The City Limits were formed by Brent Barnett in 2006, at Eastern Kentucky University. In just a short period, The City Limits have been blessed to share the stage with Thee Ensemble and Adrianne Archie, amass a steady fanbase, sign with established college booking agency W2 Entertainment, and to minister across the Southeast. Now, with "Connected", The City Limits are poised to touch lives all over the world. The group is made up entirely of students at EKU, and is inspired by God's work in the lives of the members. On one of the standout tracks, "Psalm 86 (Guard My Life)", Brent shares the testimony of how that scripture blessed his father in the midst of a health crisis. "There Is a Fountain" is a new take on a classic hymn, which describes of the power of Christ's blood. The album's finisher, "I Am Not Ashamed" is a powerful worship anthem, destined to become a standard in churches across the country. “Connected†is an example of where gospel is going: back to real worship. Connected
$11.39 The expanded version of GREATEST HITS includes 5 bonus tracks and is newly remastered.
Sam Cooke's death in 1964 left a huge void in the world of soul music not filled until Al Green's breakthrough in the early '70s. Although many great male soul singers came and went in the years following Cooke's death, none came close to the smooth and creamy style that translated to consistent cross-over success. While Otis Redding was gritty and James Brown relentless, in Green's hands, R&B was sophisticated and suave. GREATEST HITS basks in a style of sultry soul that Green inherited from Cooke.
Yet, Green's style owed as much to producer Willie Mitchell's delicate production as it did to the singer's pure falsetto. While not inclined to use the vast numbers of musicians that Phil Spector did, Mitchell's use of James Mitchell (no relation) and Charles Chalmer's string arrangements, the Memphis Horns and the background vocals of Rhodes, Chalmers and ...

$8.49 With clanking, Peter Hook-esque basslines, none-too-subtle song titles like "Out of Control" and "Tear You Apart," and Justin Warfield's Ian Curtis/Dave Gahan-inspired vocals, it's clear that She Wants Revenge is a loyal student of 1980s British post-punk and new wave. The duo plays its catchy, slightly ...
| | Brett Larner No Day Rising CD (2003)
Connected
$16.19 "A peculiar set of short pieces, almost a pop album," deadpans Brett Larner at the end of his liner notes. But don't worry, brevity is the only trait this music shares with pop: no vacuity in content or pre-fabricated emotions in the delivery. Brett Larner, Joëlle Léandre, and Kazuhisa Uchihashi all knew each other and had performed with each other prior to this studio session. All it took was a small window of opportunity for the kotoist to bring the other two inside the studio for an all-nighter. Larner is temporarily out of his extremely quiet endeavors (see Compositions for Guitars released a few months earlier) and back to a more conversational style at the koto. When he plays the bass koto (prepared or not), the instrument fills the sound spectrum, its harmonics building alliances with Léandre's double bass and Uchihashi's electric guitar. The latter has come a long way from his days with Ground Zero and Altered States. His playing is that of a refined free improviser. For "11:42 P.M." (all tracks bear similar titles) he moves to the daxophone, but it is recorded from afar and tucked into the right stereo channel, depriving the plaintive human-like voice of the instrument from its eerie power. It's all the contrary on the short but gripping duet between koto and daxophone in "5:09 A.M." and the pretty concluding trio, where Larner goes back to more traditional koto playing and Léandre develops an uplifting instant melody. Those last two tracks aside, the music remains rather calm and studious throughout, with a certain effort discernible in some places. In other words, it is not the most comfortable free improv session, but it contains some very fine moments. ~ François Couture
Brett Larner, koto, bass koto, prepared bass kotoJoelle Leandre, contrabassKazuhisa Uchihashi, electric guitar, daxophone Recorded on October 28, 2002, by Tadashi Usami at CCM studio, Oakland CAMastered on November 29, 2002, by Myles Boisen at Headless Buddha Mastering Lab, Oakland, Ca. What the Critics are Saying: No Day Rising is a document harnessed from one of those improbable circumstances whereby far-flung improvisors come together. Koto and bass koto specialist Brett Larner - associated both with his duet partner Anthony Braxton, and with the Tokyo onkyo scene in which he has performed frequently - was a student at Mills College when this date was recorded in 2002. Kazuhisa Uchihashi - a specialist on the guitar and daxophone, a modified string/wood instrument familiar to fans of Hans Reichel - was in Oakland on Larner's invitation for some gigs. Turns out that French contrabassist and vocalist Joelle Leandre was a visiting professor at Mills that fall. Leandre was in between engagements and had the briefest of windows during which to record, so Larner booked an overnight studio session, the fruits of which make up this recording.Comprised of 13 short tracks - which Larner reckons have the focused intensity of rock music, which could be why the disc's title recalls a certain Husker Du record - each of which is titled after the hour at which it was recorded, these wondrously strange performances have a nighttime spectral quality to them, as if characterized by apparitions and visions that one is uncertain one has actually seen. What was that shadow? Whence that noise? Is someone watching me?The feel ranges from a chorus of bells to buckling wood and metal; from ...
