What do you get when you cross a radio DJ, a former Olympic athlete, a graphic designer, a photographer and guy whose greatest ambition is to sell fresh mackerel from the side of the road? No, it’s not an extremely fit and well turned-out fisherman type, instead you get a feast of intelligent, sometimes blistering electro-folk-rock, all wrapped up in the band Acrojunk. They have a new single “Generation X-Squared” on the way after Christmas. Heavily influenced by the cultural writings of Douglas Coupland and melodic tuneship of The Divine Comedy, “Generation X-Squared” has the wit, the heart and the hooks to succeed on the airwaves. If you can’t wait that long for some new Acrojunk goodness, then you’re in luck as they’ve made “Christmas Bungle” available as a free download. It’s got everything a proper Christmas tune should have – Santa Claus, blazing guitars and jingle bells (of course!)In 2006, Waterford’s Acrojunk grew out of the ashes of the critically lauded group “The Bearded Ladies” and with their fervent stage presence are quickly gaining a reputation as one of Ireland’s most promising acts. Even though they’ve only been together a year, they’ve already shared stages up and down the country with such luminaries as The Walls, Mark Geary, Fred, Jerry Fish & The Mudbug Club and Dae Kim. In February of 2007, Acrojunk released their debut EP “The Cold Old Playboy” to much applause and aplomb: “Their overall sound is quite unique. Acrojunk take the best, leave the rest and develop a likeable combination of old and new styles” – Hotpress. The EP received much airplay on radio stations around the country, a selection of which are Phantom FM, Beat 102-103, WLRFM, RedFM, FM104, Flirt FM, Galway Bay FM and Live 95. The band are currently recording their debut album, which is due for release in 2008.The five members of Acrojunk are a reflection of some of the more positive aspects of modern Ireland. The newest member is Neal Byrne, himself a fine singer/songwriter and former Olympic rower, who represented Ireland at the Sydney 2000 games (that was before he was bitten by the musical bug). Guitarist Dave Manser was formerly a member of the national 2002 O2 New Band Competition winning The Real, who on the back of a top 20 single scored two successive shows at the UK’s Reading Festival. During the day drummer Trevor Nolan likes to think he’s a photographer, while bassist Ben Clooney prefers the simple things in life (such as catching fish). Meanwhile, frontman Rob O’Connor is familiar to many as the voice of the Irish Beats radio show on Beat 102 103.Acrojunk - imagine a musical cage wrestling match between The Kinks, Johnny Cash, Joy Division, Dinosaur Jr. Squeeze, Soundgarden and The Beatles and you're halfway there. | | Shawna Russell Goddess CD (2007)
Generation X-Squared
$15.19 Shawna Russell bioShawna Russell was introduced onto the national music scene with the release of her debut CD, GODDESS, in early 2008. But her reputation as a world-class talent had already caught the attention of many folks in the music industry. Prior to the release of the CD, Shawna made her national television debut on the popular show “INSIDE MUSIC ROW” and the COUNTRY MUSIC ASSOCIATION named her as one of their “Who New To Watch in 2008” artists. With the release of GODDESS, Shawna’s star began to rise. Soon, top music critics weighed in. Chris Neal of COUNTRY WEEKLY gave GODDESS a 3 ½ star review and MUSIC ROW’s Robert K.Oermann gave her debut a “DISCovery Award,” his highest compliment to a new artist. Critical praise abounded, with rave reviews from CMA CLOSE UP, MAVERICK, NASHVILLE MUSIC GUIDE, THE OKLAHOMAN, MUSIC NEWS NASHVILLE, COUNTRY STARS ONLINE and others. In a short time, Shawna’s label, Way Out West Records, of which she is a partner, introduced her with the single, “Goddess” and she began touring radio stations across the country. Impressively, she made her way into coveted performance and interview slots on KBEQ-Kansas City’s highly-rated morning show with Mike Kennedy, Atlanta’s powerhouse WUBL, and on Washington DC’s “Voice of America” – which broadcasts to an international audience. And, she signed to Buddy Lee Attractions for booking.Shawna's second single, "Should've Been Born With Wheels" and her debut video both proved to be bona fide hits, further cementing her artistic credentials. You might ask: How did an Oklahoma-based singer/songwriter and performer make such an impact with a small independent label release in such a short time? The quick answer: She earned it.Shawna first sang in public at age 7. At 13, she and her dad, Keith, formed a full-fledged country band that played for clubs and Elks Lodges nearly every weekend. Four years later, she joined her uncle Tim’s band, "Way Out West," which was already a successful regional band on the “A” club circuit across the Southwest. Shawna always carried her weight on-stage, building her remarkable chops on acoustic rhythm, electric slide and lead guitar. From those beginnings, Shawna has since toured across much of the U.S., performing 2-6 nights a week, up to 5 sets a night, at many of the top live music clubs on the circuit, including The Grizzly Rose in Denver; Billy Bob’s in Ft. Worth; and the Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville. She also performed in Canada and spent three years fronting and playing guitar in fellow Oklahoman, Ty England’s band, which included ...
