About THE GRAND-I have always dreamt about being in a band, says Amund Maarud, singer and guitarist in the Norwegian power-quartet The Grand, without the slightest touch of irony. Well, most rock musicians do just that, right? So what´s up with Amund?Thing is, Amund has actually always been in a band. More accurately; Amund has always fronted his own band. He has put out three albums, the first one when he and drummer brother Henrik were in their mid teens and still played with their father. He has travelled his native Norway for the last five-six years as a professional musician, and is actually a decorated veteran of the remarkably large Norwegian blues scene. He has headlined festivals and he has played with and alongside guitar legends, international as well as local. And yet, Amund Maarud is not even 25.e Grand´s debut EP, released on The Grand Recordings/Sonet in May 2007 received excellent reviews from the Norwegian music press and the band is said to be one of the most exciting things to come out of the Norwegian music scene this year. Their dirty and razor-sharp, but still highly psychedelic and eclectic sound makes one think of creative pioneers like The Groundhogs and Cream, or garage-greats like The Sonics or 13th Floor Elevators, but in spite of their marijuana-hazed musical foundation they refuse to be just another one of those middle-of-the-road-retro-bands and remain relentlessly inventive and fresh-sounding. Now, the great thing about The Grand, says studio-engineer Sven Olsen (Ricochets, Sivert Høyem, Dum Dum Boys), who recorded and mixed The Grand´s debut EP, is the fact that the quartet works as a four cylinder engine. This is not at all about Amund showing off his impeccable guitar skills, he says. Every member of the band is crucially important and they somehow seem to feed creative energy off each other on stage. Even this early in their career, these guys have gained a reputation for their mesmerizing live performances boasting multiple-personality-disorder-style guitar playing, out-of-whack Hammond organ, thundering ten-minute-long drum solos and growling bass guitar hung well below the belt buckle. he Grand`s musical direction came about in a very unusual way: -We struck up this routine of jamming at the end of our shows. After a while that was the coolest part of the evening, the one everyone in the band looked forward to, even though sometimes the audience didn´t dig it. Some even got seriously mad and flipped the bird to us as a parting gesture, so that´s really what sparked the whole thing, Amund confesses. -After a while some of these jams turned into full songs, and we just kinda took it from there... Upon hearing the four songs that make up The Grand´s debut EP, Freeloader, Lust to win, Girl, you´re a waste of time, and Traveling Bound, the latter of which has received heavy rotation on Oslo´s indie radio stations, it seems one is instantly transported through a strange time-warp. Has Rick Rubin travelled back in time to produce Leslie West´s Mountain? Did Cream actually secretly make a â€Disraeli Gears Part IIâ€? Has Groundhogs teleported from the dirty backstreets of London´s early seventies to the east side of Oslo, Norway anno 2007? Perhaps this first album, due October 2007, will provide some answers? Album album
$11.35 NIGHT CASTLE appears just in time for the big 2009 holiday season but don't be fooled: this isn't a Christmas album, even if it's sonically indistinguishable from Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other seasonal releases, and the fact that it's been dubbed "Capra-esque" certainly brings it within the realm of the season. NIGHT CASTLE brims with all the drama, pomp, and circumstance of Trans-Siberian Orchestra's other records but channeling these traits through a newly created narrative does have the effect of hearing it in a somewhat new light, shifting the focus entirely to the band's attack, not melody. Still, there's not that much new here -- and the coda of seasonal covers, including the first sober version of "Nutrocker" ever cut, doesn't do much to break that spell. But for those already enchanted by the Orchestra, this will continue to enthrall.

| | Bob Dylan Christmas In The Heart CD (2009)
Album CD music
$12.85 After the initial shock fades, the existence of CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART seems perhaps inevitable. After all, the thing Bob Dylan loves most of all are songs that are handed down from generation to generation, songs that are part of the American fabric, songs so common they never seem to have been written. These are the songs Dylan chooses to sing on CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART, a cheerfully old-fashioned holiday album from its Norman Rockwell-esque cover to its joyous backing vocals. Apart from the breakneck "Must Be Santa," which barrelhouses like a barroom, Dylan doesn't really reinterpret these songs as much as simply play them with his crackerjack road band, dropping in a little flair -- restoring "we'll have to muddle through somehow" to "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas," singing the opening of "O Come All Ye Faithful" in its original Latin -- but never pushing tunes in unexpected directions. Many would argue having Dylan croon these carols is unexpected enough and, true, there are times his gravelly rumble is a bit pronounced, but nothing here feels forced, it all feels rather fun, provided you're on the same wavelength as latter-day Bob, where the sound and swing of the band is as important as the song, where there's an undeniable nostalgic undertow to all the proceedings. And, of course, there's no better time for celebratory sound, swing, and nostalgia than the holidays, which may be why CHRISTMAS IN THE HEART is a bit of a left-field delight.

| | Pink Martini Splendor In The Grass CD (2009) Digipak
Album CD music
$13.39 Pink Martini follow the around-the-world-in-a-dozen-songs thrills of HEY EUGENE! with SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS, a mellower, simpler set of small pleasures. These are relative terms, however; the group's music is still well-traveled, with China Forbes singing in five languages (English, Spanish, Neapolitan, French, and Italian) instead of the six or so on EUGENE!. However, Pink Martini opt for a more unified sound here, one that draws on the more straightforward lounge-pop of their debut, SYMPATHIQUE, and the mellowness of '60s and '70s pop. SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' first half is especially smooth, opening with the beautifully soft Neapolitan ballad "Ninna Nanna" and the title track, on which Forbes sings "I think we should take it slow" over swooping strings, brass, and piano that resurrect the glory days of AM pop; that feeling is echoed by the cover of Joe Raposo's "Sing," the Sesame Street song that gained popularity when the Carpenters performed it (Emilio Delgado, aka Sesame Street's Luis, duets with Forbes here in Spanish and English). The album's first few tracks are among its most playful, including the slinky yet winking "Ohayoo Ohio" and the French confection "Ou Est Ma Tete?" While Pink Martini gets almost too cute for their own good with "And Then You're Gone" and "But Now I'm Back," a pair of songs about a quarreling couple inspired by Franz Schubert's "Fantasy Piano for Four Hands" and featuring NPR justice correspondent Ari Shapiro on the latter's vocals, SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS' second half is among their finest work. "Over the Valley" is a standout, a ballad so timelessly sweet that it seems like it must be a long-lost standard the group just blew the dust off of, but it's an original; conversely, the covers of Moondog's haunting "New Amsterdam" and Agustín Lara's "Piensa en Mi," sung by Chavela Vargas, sound fresh and authentic, providing the drama HANG ON LITTLE TOMATO and HEY EUGENE! provided in spades. Though it's a lower-key set of songs than those tw
| | Marduk World Funeral CD (2003) (Import) Japan
Album music CDs
$42.05 On 2003's WORLD FUNERAL, Swedish doom metalists Marduk offer 13 songs, highlighted by the speed track "Night of the Long Knives."
Marduk is back with their umpteenth studio album, armed with more unrelenting blastbeats, more blasphemous lyrics and song titles, and another album that sounds amazing the first few times you listen to it -- but unfortunately, not the next few. Considering how long these ornery Swedish black metallers have been around, you want to pull for them. And again, this album does sound great when you first throw it on, as the performances are intense and inspired, and there are plenty of nifty, technical-yet-catchy guitar riffs. There is also more variety, in terms of tempo, than the band is known for (i.e., there are actually a few slower parts, including the entirety of "Castrum Doloris"). On the downside, the squeaky-clean, very digital-sounding Abyss Studios production is ultimately tiring and hard on the ear; vocalist Legion still sounds like a pirate with laryngitis on much of this disc; and the lyrics are often clumsy or awkward, undercutting some of the intended "blasphemy" ("We are all thirsty as can be," goes the dramatically delivered closing line on the above-mentioned track). The band's true Achilles heel, however, is their inability to come up with a batch of songs that are strong enough, and consistently memorable enough, to anchor the extremity they're shooting for. Considering all these quibbles, it's a testament to Marduk's spirit, perhaps, that this album is at all worth listening to. And ultimately, this is not a bad album, it just falls short, yet again, of the level these veterans will need to reach -- consistently, not just on a few songs or on every third album -- if they're ever going to find themselves among the true first tier of black metal bands. ~ William York

$6.69 "Music is what happens between the Notes..."I woke up on the floor of the studio; groggily I checked my watch. Seven am. Why on earth was I here? I was still wearing head phones. I had deep earphone ruts running around my poor old ears. Past events slowly started bubbling to the surface of my memory; it was all starting to come back to me now--I had literally mixed until I had dropped; the night went on almost a full day. Time really has no meaning in the studio, unless you talk about musical time. Hours are days are weeks are years. I had problems that night—techie stuff, minutia. Not artistic problems. File formats; conversions. BS. It seems some nights the electrons dance, and others it’s nuclear fission. I remember being very proud of the final result—I wondered how it would sound RIGHT NOW. Well it just HAD to sound good--that’s all there was to it. I break the rules of mixing, using phones. All the sound snobs will tell you that it’s a definite no no. Bull. Listen to the album—you be the judge. After the mix I’ll throw it on some speakers and give it a whirl. When you listen to gman music you are listening to a headphone mix. I break a lot of rules in the studio, can’t tell you why other than I do things by the way they feel. I suppose I have a smidgen of radical resistance left over from the ‘70’s. I played the song back. “Purple smoky starlight fills the night…â€. Centrifunkal force—track number two. I listened for two things—balance and clarity. It was sounding so good. I wanted a full acoustic guitar sound in this one, and an almost live feel to it. The song is about this guy who is alienated in this city of 5 million people. He seeks comfort in a gentleman’s club where he is smitten by a dancer. He likens her to a butterfly and in his mind urges her to “fly away; don’t look down, at us poor souls anchored to the ground.â€Give it a listen will ya? Centrifunkal ForcePurple smoky starlight fills the nightSeedy men with watered whiskey wait in line. There’s a girl who drifts ‘n dances, rides a pole, she makes advances Dances round and round and round again.Mojo bag on a string hanging from my heart.Laying low in the shadows, I'm playin’ it smart.Flashing neon runway, she takes off on her soiree. Drunk on the skin of her smooth bourbon skin. Why am I so alone?Five million people call this city their home.Desperate people disconnected, disengaged, and dejectedseek secrets of the night.Round ‘n round she goes Where she stops no-one knows.I can’t get off, can’t stay the course. She's spinning round, without remorseCaught in her Centrifunkal Force Fly away Butterfly fly-fly so high.Spread your wings please take to the sky.Don’t look back, don’t look down, upon us poor souls anchored to the ground.Fly away Butterfly fly-fly away________________________________________It was time for breakfast. I hastily burned a quick-n-dirty copy of the album for the car; the car is my final playback chamber. If it sounds good in the car—it’s as they say “a printâ€. As I cruised on my mind drifted into thoughts and feelings about the making of G-force, the writing of the pieces and the performance of the album. I thought about Barker. Bob Barker is a great friend of mine who had inspired several of the songs on the album. He took me on research assignment for Centrifunkal Force, and inspired the premise for Miracle on Fourth Street.

| | Dust CD (1971) Remastered; Digipak
Album music CDs
$17.45 All songs written by Kerner and Kenny Wise, except "Loose Goose" (Kenny Aaronson).
The first album from Dust is interesting on many levels. The rhythm section featured drummer Marc Bell, who would later join New York punk rockers Richard Hell & the Voidoids, while bassist Kenny Aaronson would sign on with labelmate Stories on the group's third album, as Ian Lloyd moved from bass/vocals to complete frontman. The songwriting team of producer Kenny Kerner and singer/guitarist Richie Wise would go on to produce the third Stories album, making this Dust debut and its follow-up an important piece of the Stories puzzle. Wise's lead vocals on Dust were decent enough to complement his very competent guitar playing; Wise would eventually get hired as A&R man at Scotti Brothers Records. This record is not only the document of a record executive/producer as recording artist, but of musicians who would go on to do more substantial work in the industry. "Stone Woman," with its shimmering slide guitar work from Aaronson, would've fit perfectly on a Leslie West record. What Dust was all about is kind of difficult to get a handle on. A hard rock band for sure, and certainly spirited; the listener has to wonder if the group is successful when progressive, or if things might be better served by staying on the straight and narrow. "Chasin' Ladies" sports a real cool riff and pretty eerie vocal by Wise, while the one song contributed by Aaronson, "Loose Goose," becomes an endless jam. Wise emulates Greg Lake of ELP and, despite the good try, had Dust kept to the poppy influences all these musicians had in them, the group might have had a better chance at success. Kama Sutra, after all, had the Lovin' Spoonful and Sopwith Camel, artists who charted with pop music on the Top 40. For their image, Dust used a photo from the catacombs on the front cover and a camel in the desert on the back. It's an amalgam of hard rock and progressive sounds from co-producer Kerner, who would go on to produce hits for Gladys Knight and edit The Music Connection magazine. Interesting stuff worth hearing at least once. ~ Joe Viglione

The rhythm section featured drummer Marc Bell, who would later join New York Punkers Richard Hell & The Voidoids, while bassist Kenny Aaronson would join labelmates Stories by their third album.
