| | Al Jarreau The Very Best of: an Excellent Adventure CD (2009) Remastered
Groovy
$14.85 Vocalist Al Jarreau is one of the most successful singers in history. He has scored hits on Billboard's Jazz, R&B, Adult Contemporary, and Contemporary Jazz charts. He's won multiple Grammys and sold millions of records. Rhino has assembled 15 tracks that represent his long career with Warner Brothers and even cross-licensed a couple from Universal's GRP and Verve imprints. In addition to the 15 career-spanning cuts ranging roughly from 1975 to 1988 with a couple of tunes thrown in from the current decade, there is a new song entitled "Excellent Adventure," produced by the team of Amhir "?uestlove" Thompson and James Poyser, the same pair that produced Al Green's successful LAY IT DOWN. Fiona Frawley assembled this compilation and did a stellar job, including not only all the chart hits, but those that truly represent Jarreau's range as a singer and composer. Fans who already have comps can ditch them for this, and those who are curious would do well to actually begin their education with THE VERY BEST OF: AN EXCELLENT ADVENTURE.

| | Beegie Adair Jazz Piano Christmas CD (1999)
Groovy
$11.55 Nashville session veteran Beegie Adair turns in a pleasant, tasteful set of jazz-trio arrangements of holiday standards here, accompanied by bassist Roger Spencer and drummer Chris Brown. The trio plays the melodies straight, then Adair takes off on appropriate variations. There's nothing earth-shaking here, but the playing is effective, and the result is a worthy addition to the Christmas music catalog. ~ William Ruhlmann
Recorded at Wildwood Recording, Brentwood, Tennessee.
Beegie Adair Trio: Beegie Adair (piano); Roger Spencer (bass); Chris Brown (drums).
| | Donny Hathaway Collection CD (1990)
Groovy
$8.75 Unfortunately, Atlantic's A Donny Hathaway Collection, one of the few career retrospectives available (and basically the only one in print), isn't quite definitive; it presents a version of Hathaway's career inordinately focused on his commercially successful duets with Roberta Flack, and his slowest, most dirge-like solo recordings. A few of his best up-tempo tracks are represented ("The Ghetto," his live cover of "What's Going On"), but not before haunted material like "I Love You More Than You'll Ever Know," and "Giving Up." Admittedly, his duets with Flack are among the best recordings of his career, ranging from the depressed ("Where Is the Love") to the atmospheric ("The Closer I Get to You") to the downright driving ("Back Together Again"). But A Donny Hathaway Collection neglects far too much material from his two greatest solo albums, 1970s Everything Is Everything and 1973's Extension of a Man, to be considered the perfect first choice. It may simply be a matter of embellishing the myth of the tortured artist, but this ...
| | Jon Balke Siwan CD (2009)
Groovy
$14.65 An ambitious world fusion project, SIWAN brings together the Norwegian pianist Jon Balke, Moroccan singer Amina Alaoui, the Early Music ensemble Barokksolistene, minimalist trumpeter Jon Hassell, and others in a cross-cultural melange that imagines itself somewhere back in the medieval times of Andalusia, during the era when Spain was dominated by Muslim rule. With the expert help of Barokksolistene (Baroque solists), Balke has composed authentically evocative, Arabic-flavored settings for medieval Christian and Muslim poetic texts, fluently sung by Alaoui who sometimes resembles a serene flamenco singer or, better, a New Age descendant of the great Egyptian diva Oum Kalsoum. Hassell's horn is given ample solo space along with the Algerian violinist Eddine M'Kachiche; they both improvise against the expert zarb (Iranian hand drum) playing of Pedram Khavar Zamini. It's a heady mixture all around, and beautifully produced by ECM founder Manfred Eicher once again. The winning message is that these cultures mingled and fertilized each other in the past and will surely do so again.
Recorded September 2007 and March 2008
Barokksolistene, Bjarte Eike (violin, leader).
Personnel: Amina Alaoui (vocals); Jon Balke (keyboards); Barokksolistene (vocals); Andreas Arend (archlute, theorbo); Kheir-Eddine M'Kachiche, Anna Ivanovna Sundin, Per Buhre, Bjarte Eike, Peter Spissky, Milos Valent (violin); Rastko Roknic, Joel Sundin (viola); Kate Hearne (cello, recorder); Tom Pitt (cello); ...
| | Jan Garbarek Dresden: In Concert CDs (2009)
Groovy
$23.29 It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, DRESDEN: IN CONCERT is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. DRESDEN is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets--from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation--to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear. Garbarek plays tenor, soprano, and selje flute here, and is accompanied by his regular group that includes drummer Manu Katche, pianist/keyboadist Rainer Brüninghaus, and electric bassist Yuri Daniel. There are 16 compositions that include tracks from previous albums -- some of them radically but exquisitely revamped for this quartet and performance. There are also tunes by his bandmates, and an extended, stellar reading of Milton Nascimento's gorgeous "Milagro Dos Piexes," that features some ...
| | Dave Brubeck All The Things We Are CD (1973)
Groovy
$11.19 Demonstrating the innovative pianist's wide musical range, this early-1970s set features Dave Brubeck in a variety of settings, from a traditional combo featuring the West Coast saxophonist Lee Konitz on "Like Someone in Love," to the more experimental group of "In Your Own Sweet Way," featuring the avant-garde saxophonist Anthony Braxton demonstrating his command of more conventional jazz idioms. The album's centerpiece is an extended medley of delicate, lyrical improvisations on five pieces by the songwriter Jimmy Van Heusen.
Recorded at C.I. Studios, New York on July 17, ...
| | R E M Reveal CD (2001)
Groovy
$8.69 While the preceding UP equaled Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, and Peter Buck spending their studio time painstakingly stitching songs together via multiple overdubs, REVEAL finds the Athens trio playing together in the studio along with hired guns Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows), Ken Stringfellow (The Posies), and drummer Joey Waronker (Beck). In bouncing back from drummer Bill Berry's departure, the group has emerged with a warm-sounding record bubbling over with dreamy pop songs.
From the opening number "The Lifting," with its swirling textures, sparse piano, and Stipe's plainspoken enunciation, R.E.M. serve up heaping dollops of aural manna. Among the many highlights are the throbbing twang-and-strum of "All The Way To Reno (You're Gonna Be A Star)," which sounds like Mark Knopfler fronting The Flaming Lips, and the faux PET SOUNDS-outtake "Summer Turns To High" with its shimmering keyboards and Stipe's casual falsetto. Elsewhere, R.E.M. fuse Stax-flavored horns, swooping strings, and a cheap-sounding drum machine for the lighter-than-air "Beachball," and set off on a soaring flight of Rickenbacker guitar jangle soaked in strings and synths on "Imitation Of Life." REVEAL represents R.E.M's rebirth as a mellifluous pop engine.
REVEAL was nominated for the 2002 Grammy Award for Best Recording Package. ...
