Dolce CD music
$12.59 As any quick perusal of old Top 40 rock & roll station playlists will attest, singles were where the shakin' action was, as rock & roll albums were scarce as hen's teeth back in those pre-Beatle days. But when the record companies decided to issue one, it was usually an artifact of high rockin' value and some major influence. Naysayers to the contrary, this debut album by the Northwest's first great rock & roll combo is just such an artifact. The Wailers dispensed crude, greasy, largely instrumental rock & roll music for those who came to shake it up and shake it down, and it's all on fine, rhythmic, open display here. This album is amazing in its own simplistic, nuthin'-special way, its crudity almost palpable. There's only one vocal aboard, Kent Morrill's "Dirty Robber," later covered and torched by the Sonics. Everything else is built on the riff-sturdy bones of their biggest hit, "Tall Cool One." With two guitars, piano, sax, and drums -- no bass player anywhere on here, another crudeness indicator ...
| | Johnny Boyd Last Word In CD (2001)
Dolce music CDs
$12.89 The charismatic singer and songwriter Johnny Boyd returns to the music scene with his new solo release titled Last Word In. The former Indigo Swing frontman has written 12 fresh compositions that pair his signature vocals with classic, life-learned themes written from an introspective angle. Johnny Boyd is in great company with guitarist Dean Parks of Joni Mitchell and Lyle Lovett fame, the chromatic harmonica player Tommy Morgan known for his work with the Beach Boys and Henry Mancini, and pianist and composer Red Young, the great writer that has penned several songs for Linda Ronstadt and Plas Johnson. Johnny Boyd uses a wide variety of instrumentation including a string orchestra, big band, gospel choir, and even a singing mariachi troupe. On "Some Eggs" and "I Don't Know What I Was Doing Then," he's a registered romantic, offering jazzed-up lyrics of love backed by a big band. His voice is butter-smooth and honey-toned, just right for these songs that hit home because of their direct honest lyrics. He gets down on the gospel-filled "Twisted" and "I Got Religion" complete with an excellent gospel choir and Red Young on Hammond organ. His bluesy vocals get a workout on the title track "Last Word In" a blues and country-flavored confessional about a rebel that finds himself in constant trouble for being a loudmouth. Boyd is a romantic crooner on the lovelorn "The One I Love" and swings on "Honey Dew." Johnny Boyd sings something for everyone: jazz, pop, country, and blues with sentimental sureness on his solo career outing. It's a sure bet for his thousands of devoted fans worldwide. ~ Paula Edelstein
How do you sum up Johnny Boyd? WOW! Timeless. Inspirational. Sophisticated. Refreshing. (to start). After a highly successful seven-year stint as the frontman for Indigo Swing, more than 100,000 albums sold, 1,100 live performances around the world, and a dozen song placements in movies and television, Boyd decided to go solo. "Last Word In" marks his sentimental return to popular music, with a swingin' vibe that is sophisticated and fun."Last Word In" contains twelve fresh tracks written by Boyd, pairing his signature plaintive vocals with timeless themes, brimming with honesty and optimism. Written mostly from an introspective angle, Boyd offers up a more intimate side of himself with these ...
| | Culture World Peace CD (2003)
Dolce songs
$13.89 While Culture has made a handful of truly outstanding albums over the course of its 27-year career, it has always had a little bit of trouble emerging from the shadow of Two Sevens Clash, its epoch-making sophomore album from 1977 (even the press materials for World Peace start out with a mention of that album). So the question about World Peace, as it has been with every album since Two Sevens Clash, is: how does it measure up? And the answer is: better than any album the band has recorded in a decade. It's hard to know just what has invigorated the aging Joseph Hill, but he is singing with more force and conviction than we've heard in years; and the band that was organized to back him up (consisting of The Firehouse Crew and members of Shaggy's backup group) sounds like the rumble of thunder and the crack of a whip. As always, Hill's melodies are as simple and obvious as nursery rhyme ditties, and as usual, they are insanely catchy and almost endlessly entrancing. On World Peace, Hill chose to reprise a couple of songs from the old book, "Dog a Go Nyam Dog" and "Never Get Weary," but both come off sounding like new compositions. Highlights from the newer material include the strangely funky and horn-heavy "Holy Mount Zion," the Nyahbinghi-influenced "Babylon Falling," and the exquisitely sanctified "Walk in Jah Light." But his real moment of triumph comes on "Selection ...
