If the fusion of hardcore punk and hip-hop pioneered by the Beastie Boys has largely been subsumed by the more corporate leanings of rap-metal, it only gives more credence to the existence of groups like the YMD. Coming across like a lo-fi version of LICENSE TO ILL-era Beasties, the young Philly-based ensemble take a no-holds-barred approach with their irreverent genre smashing album EXCUSE ME, THIS IS THE YAH MOS DEF. Unsanctimoniously smashing together kitschy pop culture references with homegrown hip-hop beats, the YMD fuse the brash, bratty invective of punk with the playful exuberance of hip-hop.Alternative Press (p.163) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]igh-pitched rapping over rudimentary hip-hop beats that feature sampled snippets of all your '90s DIY hardcore and indie favorites." CMJ - "YMD are less hip-hop than punk, attacking their music like two high-pitched hardcore shouters that slowed down their approach just enough to incorporate humor and rhythm." Excuse Me, This Is The Yah Mos Def songs
$15.65 X (2008) finds Kylie Minogue in excellent form. After the commercial and critical success of 2004's BODY LANGUAGE and a harrowing battle with cancer, the Australian pop diva seemed poised to bounce back onto the scene with a new energy, and that's precisely what she did. X doesn't signal a radical change in direction, however. Instead, it plays like an expression of her greatest strength, namely making immediately hooky dance-pop that draws effortlessly on `80s mainstream pop, hard-driving club music, and contemporary R&B.
One of the impressive things about X is how diverse it is. There are glam-rock grinders (opener "2 Hearts"), classic-sounding Madonna-esque gems ("Wow"), intimate R&B groovers ("All I See"), tense electro-pop ("Like a Drug"), and breathy, atmospheric jams ("Sensitized"). All of this comes off sounding remarkably unified and consistent, making X a satisfying listen from front to back. Minogue isn't out to reinvent the wheel, and has never claimed she is-but X is pure pop pleasure, and as such succeeds beautifully
By the time of 2004's Body Language, Kylie Minogue was seemingly unassailable, with three hit albums (both critically and commercially), a number of hit singles, and a recharged career that only a few years before had seemed precarious at best. She backed up the new material with a collection (Ultimate Kylie) that boasted excellent new material as well. All things seemed to be destined for further glory. And then, unfortunately, cancer hit. While she did recover fully from her illness and ordeal, there was some speculation on how she would deal with this event, and how her music and choice of collaborators would be affected. Many artists have come back from a potentially life-threatening disease with work that is a flat-out declaration of victory, songs and images that are thinly shrouded metaphors for rebirth or newfound strength. Therefore, it must have surprised many that the leadoff from Kylie's new record would be "2 Hearts," a '70s-style Roxy Music-esque glam jam that clocks in at under three minutes, and is -- seemingly -- devoid of any sort of "I'm back from the brink" anthemizing. Couple this pop gem with the gaudy early-'80s artwork, and the ...
