Before anyone had heard a track from WAR PAINT, the Black Crowes' seventh studio outing, it had already kicked up a PR firestorm. Either by deciding to forego listening to it or by obtaining a leaked download, Maxim Magazine panned the record before they even had an official promotional copy. These aging neo-hippies found themselves as unlikely defenders of the teetering music industry by publicly defaming Maxim and demanding an apology. They got it. Maxim ate, er, crow. Having taken shots since their debut record for their unabashed derivative revivalism, the Crowes seem to be a band that functions best when beleaguered.

Fortunately, WAR PAINT is worth the tussle. After a decade-plus on the jam band circuit, the Robinson brothers return to form, gleefully ripping off the Rolling Stones. The lead-off track, "Goodbye Daughters of the Revolution," with its swinging beat and raunchy slide--courtesy of Mississippi All-Star and new Crowe Luther Dickinson--recalls "Let it Bleed." "Oh, Josephine" echoes the weary, processed guitar tones of "Waiting On a Friend." They even ape the Stones aping Gram Parsons on the beautiful, country-tinged number "Locust Street." WAR PAINT occasionally finds the band stretching out into a looser, more natural vibe, as on "Whoa Mule," the closer, augmented by elements of freak-folk and reportedly recorded outside the band's Catskills studio. All told, this is the band's best album since THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION.

The Black Crowes: Chris Robinson, Steve Gorman, Sven Pipien, Adam MacDougall, Luther Dickenson, Rich Robinson.

Audio Mixer: Paul Stacey.

Rolling Stone (pp.55-56) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "On WARPAINT, the driving force is the blues....Together with new keyboard player Adam MacDougall, Dickinson and Rich Robinson give some of the songs a feel close to those of the Allman Brothers or Derek and the Dominos."
Uncut (p.87) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "WARPAINT rocks, all the more thrillingly for its utter guilelessness..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.100) - "Highlights include lighter-waving sing-along 'Wounded Bird'; big-screen Americana 'Whoa Mule'...and TUMBLEWEED CONNECTION via DESPERADO 'There's Gold In Them Hills'..."
Harp (magazine) - "WARPAINT reasserts the band as a rock powerhouse. Rich's riffs and Chris' soul-drenched vocals are wrapped in hooks and innuendo, but the x-factor is the addition of guitarist Luther Dickinson..."

5 stars Warpaint worth every penny
The Black Crowes have returned to top form after a 7 year absence from new material. If you liked the diversity of Amorica, this album matches it track for track. Rich Robinson has shown that he has taken over the throne from Keff Riffhard. Chris Robinson preserves his voice and sings better than he has since 97's unreleased album The Band (which has since been released under the title Lost Crowes). Steve Gorman lays the beat down and shows that he's not like most rock drummers who seem to not be able to change their style. Sven Pipien shows why he is the most underrated bassist in rock bands today. Of course everyone would love to have Marc Ford and Ed Harsch back in the band- but you won't be disappointed with the replacements. Technically speaking, Audrey Freed may have been the best guitarist to have been with the Black Crowes. However, no one has ever had as much spirited guitar playing as when Ford was in the band. Luther Dickinson brings the same guitar slinging, slide-wailing sound that Ford once gave the fans and brings a new look to lead playing as he mimics the lead vocal much like the great Mick Taylor did with the Stones. Dickinson will challenge Chris Robinson to be a better singer. If you love true rock and roll with a lot of soul, you need this. No need to talk about sounding like the Faces, Stones, or Humble Pie. The Black Crowes sound like The Black Crowes. Thank goodness a band can still carry the torch for album rock.

3 stars Rock n Roll drenched in Soul=WARPAINT!
Great record from the Black Crowes who keep making music on their terms & without losing their sound! This album feels more like an Alman brothers Band record than any of their past work. This is not a bad thing, they have the core of the band(although i would love marc ford and ed harsch to be on this album) and the players they've added are great and talented! They sound like a family having a great time making music! Nothing seems forced on this record & although i liked Lions, it did seem forced at times. On WARPAINT everythings flows like water over the falls!! Since coming out with Shake Your Money Maker in 1990 no band is more Rock N Roll than the Crowes;) This album is up their with Southern Harmony, Shake Your Money Maker,& Amorica as CrowesClassics!! It's nice to see a band that likes to make whole records still crankin em out! peaceD

On Vine Street: The Early Songs Of Randy Newman

Many Randy Newman fans are aware that before he began to focus on a solo recording career in the late 1960s, he'd worked as a jobbing songwriter for years, his compositions or co-compositions getting recorded by numerous other artists. Even fairly serious Newman fans, however, might be unaware of just how much such material he penned in his early years. Twenty-six Newman interpretations spanning 1962-1970 are on this superbly annotated compilation, and as much as it digs up -- much of it rare, one cut even previously unreleased -- it's just the tip of the iceberg. Some of the songs, and quite a few of the performers, are fairly well known: Alan Price had a British hit with "Simon Smith and the Amazing Dancing Bear" in 1967; Cilla Black had a U.K. Top 20 single with "I've Been Wrong Before" in 1965; Gene Pitney went all the way to number two in Britain with "Nobody Needs Your Love" in 1966; Nilsson's "So Long Dad" is from his well-regarded 1970 Nilsson Sings Newman album; and Eric Burdon & the Animals' "Mama Told Me Not to Come" is the original 1967 version of a classic later recorded by Newman himself and made into a hit by Three Dog Night. There's also "Old Kentucky Home," from the Beau Brummels' 1967 album Triangle, and Dusty Springfield's reliably fine version of "I Think It's Going to Rain Today." It might astound even collectors, however, to see just how many notable artists recorded Newman tunes in the '60s, including the O'Jays, Irma Thomas, Erma Franklin, Gene McDaniels, Frankie Laine, the Fleetwoods, Jackie DeShannon, Scott Walker, Van Dyke Parks, Rick Nelson, Fats Domino...the list goes on. Also thrown in are some generally worthy obscurities, like "Happy New Year" by Beverley, who later became known as John Martyn's wife and musical partner, and Vic Dana's "Looking for Me," which sounds like a West Side Story outtake. Newman scholars will find this interesting for strong hints of his later fusions of Tin Pan Alley, R&B, and various strains of Americana in his more mature solo work. General fans of '60s rock, however, will find this surprisingly interesting and pleasing evidence that Randy Newman was adept at far more conventional music than what he'd become famous for under his own name, crafting quite catchy, if somewhat erratic, ...
