There is no shortage of metal-related bands that offer a "Beauty and the Beast" approach when it comes to juxtaposing female vocals and male vocals. "Beauty" is often a female lead singer with an ethereal, decidedly goth vocal style, while "The Beast" might favor either death metal's Cookie Monster growl or black metal's sinister rasp. This is a collection of songs by musicians who love their country and believe the US can be a leader for peace in the world. In a time when it's said to be unpatriotic to use the very freedoms we are trying to protect, these women are not afraid to stand up for what they believe in. The songs cover a lot of ground, from kindness and lullabies to guided missiles and the Patriot Act. Some issue a direct challenge for a better America while others invite the listener to imagine peaceful alternatives to our current course of action. Most are recent creations, although a few date back 10-15 years with messages that are still relevant today.This project came together through a collaboration of musicians and concerned citizens who wanted an alternative to the voices they were hearing in the mainstream press and radio: primarily male voices arguing for pre-emptive attacks and military budget increases. In a time when corporate radio heads banned the Dixie Chicks for exercising their First Amendment rights, this concerned group wondered what other voices were being silenced.They decided to find those voices and create a way for them to be heard, with the proceeds going to other organizations working for peace. They sent out a call for submissions and received 86 songs from independent artists. Washington D.C.'s Urban Verbs are often cited as a pretentious new wave band from a town that would later help birth hardcore punk, but the truth is they deserve better than that. Urban Verbs were one of the first significant new wave acts to emerge from the nation's capitol, they helped to found what would become one of the city's finest rock venues, the 9:30 Club, and their best work was genuinely striking and distinctive. 1981's Early Damage, the group's second and final album, is a compelling collection of cool but dramatic soundscapes fueled by Robert Goldstein's guitar work, which could shapeshift into smooth, jagged, or impressionistic patterns at will. Goldstein had a more than able musical foil in keyboard player Robin Rose, and if her synthesizer patterns sound just a bit clichéd these days, they were innovative back in the day and they're still effective in context. And drummer Danny Frankel and bassist Linda France were a gifted rhythm section who brought a thoughtful variety of tonal colors to the mix without littering the sleek horizons of this sound.
