Naya Daur video
$32.79 Performers include Shruti Sadolikar-Katkar, Vidyadhar Vyas (vocals); Anant Krishnaji Kunte (sarangi); Hariprasad Chaurasia (flute); Buddhadev DasGupta (sarod); Sandip Bhattacharya, Devendra Kanti Chakrabarty, Ted De Jong, Madhukar Kothare, Shib Shankar Ray (tabla).
In music-speak, ragas are essentially scalar melody forms -- something like scales or melodic modes in Western music. However, North Indian ragas do differ from Western modes and scales in several important ways: ragas often take on different ascending and descending forms, act as melodic armatures for vocal and/or instrumental improvisation, are frequently believed to have divine origins and characteristics, and are commonly associated with a certain season or time of the day. The Raga Guide acts an impressive introduction to the sophisticated sonic world of Hindustani ragas. In conjunction with its 184-page booklet, The Raga Guide offers narrative descriptions, musical notation, and -- most importantly -- audio examples of 74 distinct ragas. The CD's tracks are presented by four illustrious soloists: flutist Hariprasad Chaurasia, sarod player Buddhadev Das Gupta, and vocalists Vidyadhar Vyas and Shruti Sadolikar-Katkar. In short, ...
| | Ravi Shankar West Meets East: Historic Shankar/Menuhin Sessions CD (1967)
Naya Daur film
$8.29 That a Western violinist should choose to pair with the illustrious Ravi Shankar is not in itself surprising. The violin was fully absorbed (and tuned much lower) by the Indian classical music establishment by the 19th century, and more recently has produced performers such as Dr. L. Subramaniam, Lalgudi Jayaraman, and the highly experimental L. Shankar. However, aside from being a highly accomplished set of recordings, the WEST MEETS EAST series--three Menuhin-Shankar collaborations that were later distilled into this one--elevated world music to new heights.
Menuhin had championed Indian music in the West for years before learning how to play it. His sensitivity to the material is demonstrated on "Swara Kakali," particularly during the tremendous duet that closes the track. On the evening raga, "Raga Piloo," Menuhin and Shankar glide in and out of each other's styles in a performance that is alternately Indian and Russian/Jewish, bound by their obvious empathy.

$5.95 Shankar introduces each track with an explanation of the elements of Indian classical music, including the raga, microtones, drone, and various talas, or rhythmic cycles. The second track, "Dadra," carries a six-beat structure--unusual for Shankar--and its light, playful feel will be familiar to fans of older Bollywood film music. An excellent primer for Indian ...
