In the 21st century, there are some electric blues albums that aim for a classic "Chess Records in the 1950s and 1960s" type of approach but just don't get it right; a lot of the grit is missing -- perhaps in the vocals, perhaps in the musicianship, perhaps in the production. But that isn't a problem at all on Steve Guyger's Radio Blues, a 2008 release that manages to capture the spirit of electric Chicago blues as it existed on the Chess label 40 and 50 years earlier. Drawing on influences like Willie Dixon, Little Walter, Muddy Waters, and Howlin' Wolf, Guyger never misses his mark; he obviously wanted a classic Chess-type sound, and Guyger is as confident on vocals as he is on the harmonica. In fact, his singing and harmonica playing complement one another nicely on original material as well as performances of Joe Liggins' "The Honeydripper," Muddy Waters' "Let Me Hang Around," and Rudy Toombs' "I'm Shakin'." The production is also a plus; Guyger produced this 53-minute CD with David Earl and bassist Steve Gomes, and together they make Radio Blues sound well produced but not over-produced. Guyger, Earl, and Gomes see to it that the production captures the grit of the performances -- a type of grit that Chess Records was famous for. Radio Blues isn't the work of a rigid blues purist; occasionally, the album detours into early rock & roll territory in a Bo Diddley-ish fashion. But even then, the Chess influence remains; Diddley, after all, was a Chess artist who was both a master of electric post-WWII Chicago blues and an early rock & roller -- and Diddley's influence on garage rock, blues-rock, and British Invasion rock was huge. Radio Blues doesn't pretend to be groundbreaking; nonetheless, this is a pleasing, if derivative, example of a 21st century session that worships at the almighty Chess Records altar and does so convincingly. ~ Alex Henderson

Gardenias For Lady Day
James Carter Gardenias For Lady Day CD  (2003) Hybrid; SACD Hybrid

Radio Blues music CDs
CD $8.25  4.5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
This is a hybrid Super Audio CD playable on both regular and Super Audio CD players. Following up his 2000 tribute to guitarist Django Reinhardt, Chasin' the Gypsy, saxophonist James Carter pays homage to iconic jazz singer Billie Holiday on Gardenias for Lady Day. Perhaps never before has the jazz iconoclast balanced so perfectly his "big top" avant-garde leanings with his more pinstriped traditionalist aesthetic. This is a beautiful album that revels as much in classic melody as it does in Carter's most torrid saxophone "skronk." Although the album largely succeeds on Carter's virtuosic performance, it gains most of its character from the deft and unpredictable orchestral arrangements of Greg Cohen and fellow Detroiter Cassius Richmond. In particular, Richmond brings a cinematic quality to the album with his treatments of "Sunset," "I Wonder Where Our Love Is Gone," and "Gloria" that breathe and swell, rubbing dramatically against Carter's muscular sound. Similarly, Cohen -- who has worked with such N.Y.C. downtown scenesters as John Zorn, David Byrne, and Tom Waits ...
Fallen Angel
Uriah Heep Fallen Angel CD  (1978) (Import) +8 Bonus Tracks; United Kingdom

Radio Blues songs
CD $10.49  4 stars
On Fallen Angel, Uriah Heep continued the push toward an AOR-friendly style that began with Innocent Victim. The resulting album is too poppy to please hardcore metal fans and too eccentric to fit the bill of an AOR record, but it still manages to be a surprisingly enjoyable listen. Fallen Angel focuses squarely on crafting driving rock tunes leavened with a series of pop hooks: "Woman of the Night" pairs guitar-bolstered verses with a harmony-drenched chorus reminiscent of Queen while "One More Night" cleverly conforms the sloppy good cheer of boogie rock to a pop song format. Other tracks find the band stretching their heavy-AOR ambitions into other genres: the burbling synthesizers and stuttering bassline of "Whad'ya Say" lend that song a disco feel while the insistent, naggingly catchy "la la la" chorus of "Love or Nothing" suggests the group had spent some time listening to old bubblegum pop singles. This surprising diversity points out the problems with Fallen Angel: it goes in so many different directions that it never coheres the way a really good album should, and it strays too far from the group's original sound to really fit in with the rest of their catalog. Nonetheless, it is simply too energetic and well-crafted ...

A rerelease of the 1964 debut album by British rock & roll outfit, The Downliners Sect. This is the group's rawest and most R&B-oriented album, firmly rooted in the same influences as the Rolling Stones and the Pretty Things and including punk covers of Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, ...
Daddy Gave Me The Blues
Elmore James, Jr Daddy Gave Me The Blues CD  (2008) (Import) United Kingdom

Radio Blues CD music
CD $16.19  Audio Samples
Cut of the same cloth as his famous father, Elmore James, Jr. is a legitimate blues man in the best sense. He plays electric guitar and sings quite well, not with the intensity of his dad, but that shouldn't be expected. What he has become is a seasoned professional with the right attitude, consistently interpreting Chicago-style 12-bar blues without watering it down. In a world where contemporary pop and soul have invaded authentic blues, what James is laying down is definitely the real thing. It's also commendable that he borrows from a repertoire of well-known songs, while adding others that have a certain flair and originality, keeping the fire of his legendary father burning brightly on both ends. James has an excellent group, fired up by saxophonists Jeff Turmes and Ron Dzuibla, bassist Oakland Red, and second guitarist ...
