| | Roy Campbell Akhenaten Suite CD Roy Campbell Discography of CDs
A relative late bloomer to the jazz world, trumpeter Roy Campbell is indicative of a new generation of improvisers who have the benefit of hindsight in reinventing the language of modal jazz--taking the best facets of tradition (cool, swing, bop, post-bop) and applying it to the most salient aspects of the avant-garde. AKHENATEN SUITE, a commissioned piece for the 12th annual Vision Festival, contains an extended ensemble piece that recalls the far-flung and exotic locales evoked in long-form works such as Duke Ellington's FAR EAST SUITE and Sun Ra's HELIOCENTRIC WORLDS. Recorded live for the festival in 2007, the piece is a splendid post-bop meditation splattered with moments of pure overtone bliss, courtesy of Campbell's blustery brass textures and violinist Billy Bang's assertive melodic arcs. The frontline improvisational soloing, while impressive, is always kept to a measured level of restraint, anchored by a rhythmic center consisting of bassist Hilliard Greene's and drummer Zen Matsuura's radiant, swinging pulses--marking this outing as one steeped in tradition as enduring as that of the ancients.

Akhenaten Suite album
$9.65 In late 1999, the Dutch label KonKurrent invited Minneapolis band Low into an in-house studio to record one of the label's near-legendary In the Fishtank sessions; bands have two days to record between 20-30 minutes of all new material of their choosing. Also touring at the time were Low's pals, the Australian instrumental dynamos the Dirty Three. Low invited them in, and in the same collaborative spirit as another In the Fishtank session involving Tortoise and the Ex, this half-hour session ...
| | Harold Mabern Few Miles From Memphis CD (1968)
Akhenaten Suite CD music
$14.15 On A Few Miles from Memphis, recorded by pianist Harold Mabern in 1968, he's joined by tenors George Coleman and Buddy Terry, bassist Bill Lee, and drummer Walter Perkins for a bluesy, rhythm-filled set featuring familiar fare like "A Treat for Bea" and fun originals like "Walkin' Back." There's also the odd inclusion of "There's a Kind of Hush," a pop song that comes out sounding like an old standard here. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford Jr.
When record labels like Prestige release two albums on one CD, it's a great bargain for music fans. A Few Miles from Memphis combines ...

Akhenaten Suite music CDs
$19.99 Raven presents the very best of Solomon Burke's recordings for MGM in the 1970s, many on CD for the first time. A pioneering soul singer, Burke's powerful voice and fervent emotionality were much-admired through the 1960s. At MGM, with arranger Gene Page, Solomon deftly crafted a commercial and contemporary sound - both ...
| | Ike & Tina Turner Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good CD (2006) Bonus Tracks
Akhenaten Suite songs
$17.75 Raven's 2006 two-fer Nutbush City Limits/Feel Good combines two of Ike & Tina Turner's last albums together and adds five bonus tracks, three of which were taken from other Ike & Tina albums from the early '70s, one taken from a Tina solo record, and one disco mix of "Nutbush City Limits." The album that arrives first on this two-fer was actually the last of these two to be released: Nutbush City Limits appeared in 1973, a year after Feel Good, but its title track is one of Ike & Tina's best-known songs so it's an appropriate choice to kick off this disc. Besides, the two records are so similar in tone and approach, it'd be easy to assume that Feel ...

Akhenaten Suite songs
$11.39 Kitten On The KeysRagtime, Novelty, and Stride ClassicsInterpreted byFrederick HodgesFrederick Hodges, one of the finest pianists of our time, debuts in his first solo album for Aristophone Records. His playing is a virtual encyclopedia of the history of early jazz piano – from ragtime and stride to novelty piano. If there is a pianist, or for that matter a musician on any instrument, who comes close to doing everything best, it is Frederick. The sheer scope of his playing amazes musicians -- particularly pianists. “Kitten On The Keys” contains the most diverse repertoire ever performed by Frederick on a single recording, including works by Eubie Blake, Zez Confrey, George L. Cobb, and Lucky Roberts. It is a virtuoso performance whose subtleties bear repeated listening. The rollicking, joyous rhythms of ragtime find full expression in the delightful selection of solo piano pieces on this CD, spanning the years 1900 to 1921. These two decades were among the most creatively rich in ...
