Music from nations ending in "land" generally has an idiosyncratic, glacial beauty that befits its lush landscapes. And apparently there's something quite mysterious lurking beneath Finland's gorgeous waters and greenery. THE SIREN'S WAVE is something like an instrumental album you'd hear on a massage table, if the person rubbing down your back was harboring a strange and intriguing secret. Hanna Tuulikki's vocals, which land somewhere between Joanna Newsom and a mystical witch, set in motion an assortment of entrancing reed and string instruments and create an unforgettably uncomfortable hypnosis. WAVE is mind-bendingly meditative stuff, no matter what region you hail from.
Unknown Contributor Role: Hanna Tuulikki.
Personnel: Hanna Tuulikki (vocals, guitar, kantele, flute, recorder, harmonium, Moog synthesizer, dancer); Chris Hladowski (vocals, bouzouki, hammer dulcimer, oud, clarinet, harmonium, percussion); Aby Vulliamu (vocals, viola, cello, accordion).
Author: Brad Rose.
The Wire (p.57) - "[T]his is a bold and complex album, on which metaphysical themes of life and grief are articulated with such consideration that the result is unique and deeply touching." Pitchfork - "'Voi Ruusuni (O Rose)' is an elongated tone-poem with some hypnotic elements, especially Hanna Tuulikki's Yoko Ono-like wail." Siren's Wave album
$11.75 The second Glee soundtrack throws a bone to the show's supporting characters, with Jenna Ushkowitz (the faux-stuttering Tina) singing her first solo and Amber Riley (Mercedes) receiving a larger chunk of airtime. Lea Michele and Matthew Morrison continue to steal the show, though; Morrison delivers one of the album's most inventive songs with a mash-up of "Don't Stand So Close to Me" and "Young Girl," while Michele sings the absolute pants ...

| | Gov't Mule By A Thread CD (2009)
Siren's Wave songs
$11.55 BY A THREAD is Gov't Mule's first studio album since HIGH & MIGHTY was issued in 2006. Since that time, bassist Andy Hess has been replaced by Jorgen Carlsson, though Hess appears on two tracks at the end of the album. Carlsson's playing style is much more aggressive than Hess', and is therefore closer - in spirit anyway - to Gov't Mule's original bassist, the late Allen Woody, though he possesses an adventurous sense of time and is harmonically more colorful than either Woody or Hess. Carlsson and drummer Matt Abst are a solid match, since Abst is a drummer used to shifting time signatures and allowing the unexpected in while still driving a band. The band's keyboardist and rhythm guitarist, Danny Louis, is a shape-shifter, playing to whatever is needed in a given track. His manner of coloring sounds inside and around a particular tune's framework is a large part of what makes Gov't Mule's sound so fresh here - despite the fact that they don't stray far from what they ...

| | Head Of Femur Great Plains CD (2008)
Siren's Wave album
$10.09 We ride leisurely into the Great Plains on a clip-clopping horse, drawn by Head of Femur's dreamy Beatlesesque harmonies and the pull of a trumpet solo. This is the band's third album, and within they pay tribute to their Nebraska home. Over time, Femur had ballooned into an almost unwieldly collective, but now they've slimmed down to a solid rock quintet. That musical transformation is apparent on such coursing songs as "River Ramble" and "Jetway Junior." Even so, the band's orchestral leanings still bob to the surface, tellingly on the rocking, jazzy sax solo that shoots across the latter number. For Femur's head is still in the orchestral clouds, and an entire string and brass section is brought on board for this set. Both are used subtly, however, weaving rich textures and atmospheres throughout the album. The strings add depth and gravitas to the classically inclined "Covered Wagons," the brass of '60s joie de vivre to the R&B flavored "Great Plains," and an exultant air to "Napoleon's Boots." Creating a lushness to the sound, a flash of excitement, or a twist in style, the strings and brass remain integral to ...

| | Marti Brom Wise To You! CD (2003)
Siren's Wave album
$13.05 From the cover of Wise to You!, Marti Brom's painted lips and styled, jet-black hair cut the figure of a diva. The title of the album has been written on a piece of paper, which has been pinned to a tree with a dangerous-looking knife. Clearly, Brom is not the kind of gal to be trifled with. On the title track, she gets wise to her no-good, cheatin' man, and even though he's sorry for his misdeeds, she's not buying it. This tough gal does have a heart, though, and can sing it soft and sad on a lovely song like "The Rainbow's End." Backed by a spare country background highlighted by steel guitar, Brom's ...
