| | Rudresh Mahanthappa Kinsmen CD (2008) Digipak
Maachis film
$12.95 On his first five albums as a leader, saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa explored an edgy post-bop direction. On KINSMEN, however, he teams up with saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath and the Dakshina Ensemble, who specialize in South Indian classical music, to make a connection between his own post-bop roots and Indian classical forms. Unlike many Indian-influenced albums released in the West, KINSMEN doesn't rely completely on traditional raga forms. Instead, ...
| | DJ Cheb I Sabbah Shri Durga CD (1999)
Maachis review
$13.15 Most Asian-European dance fusion of the '90s has come from London's Asian Underground scene, and has drawn primarily on bhangra sources for its Asian content. DJ Cheb i Sabbah's project, on the other hand, is based on classical traditions, specifically the Hindustani music of northern India; perhaps not surprisingly, the music is accordingly less dancehall-oriented, though DJ Cheb (with the help of bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Kevin Carnes, among others) does indeed lay on the funky beats in most cases. But all of the compositions are based on traditional ragas, and the beats often come after prolonged and contemplative preludes, during which the raga is stated in its traditional vocal or traditional setting. On "Ganga Dev," for example, the singer starts off accompanied only by a drone, and is then joined by tabla and sitar after a couple of minutes, and only then do Laswell's bass and Carnes' drums come in to funk things up. Most tracks follow this pattern, and the overall effect is more soothing than booty-moving. If you want to party, pick up Maha Maya, the companion album to this one which features many of the same compositions in clubbier mixes. This one's for the chill-out room. Both are highly recommended. ~ Rick Anderson

| | Lakshminarayana Shankar Song For Everyone CD (1984) Digipak
Maachis DVD
$9.29 Song for Everyone heralds the return of the groove in Shankar's East-West-minded music, with former Shakti colleague Zakir Hussain on tabla, Trilok Gurtu on percussion, and Shankar's own manipulation of a drum machine tending to the rhythms. The result is a brighter, more outgoing record than its predecessor Vision, veering between Western acoustic and electric grooves and the complex beats churned out by the tabla. Jan Garbarek again shines beams of light on soprano and tenor, engaging Shankar's ten-string double-necked electric violin in some complex interplay on the title track. Some tracks are driven entirely or partially by the drum machine; "Paper Nut" has a particularly infectious revolving pattern. But sometimes Shankar overdoes it; the lengthy "Watching You" has an overly mechanized feeling that can be either mesmerizing or infuriating, depending upon your mood. On another track, "I Know," the Western percussion is gradually swallowed up by the Indian tabla. Fascinating, ...

| | India: Religious Chants CD (1999) With Book
Maachis video
$10.19 Recorded in the Field between 1954 & 1973. Includes liner notes by Deben Bhattacharya.
An intriguing concept, this album contains a devotional chant or two from each of six or so religious sects within India. Hinduism is represented with a pair of chants from Rattan Mohan Sharma, Jainism is represented by its holiest chant, and Sikhism with a nice khyal from the Singh brothers. Islam, and more specifically Sufism, is represented by works in the qawwal vein from Abida Parveen and Shafqat Ali Khan. Buddhism has a chant, and even the rarer Bauls are represented with a work. Many of the chants include what seems like some unnecessary instrumentation, and even what might be a stray synthesizer. Some of the tracks benefit from the instrumentation, others are detracted from. Overall, the ...
