Producer Mike Chapman helped Lita Ford craft her true breakthrough album, Lita, loading it with big, slick arena rock/pop-metal hooks and making it her most consistent solo album. Ford scored big hits with "Kiss Me Deadly" and the ballad "Close My Eyes Forever," the latter a duet with Ozzy Osbourne and the first Top Ten single for either. ~ Steve Huey
Personnel: Lita Ford (vocals, guitars), David Ezrin (keyboards), Donnie Nossov (bass), Myron Grombacher (drums), Greg Krampf (drums, percussion), Llory McDonald, Mike Chapman (background vocals).

Lita album
$8.49 When church leaders were accusing heavy metal of encouraging Satanism, Stryper set out to prove that metal and hard rock could be used to promote Christianity. The southern California band was viewed with suspicion by both ministers (who refused to believe that Christianity and metal were compatible) and fellow headbangers -- and yet, Stryper managed to sell millions of albums to both Christian and secular audiences. Stryper's first release, The Yellow and Black Attack!, showed the rockers to be along the lines of Def Leppard and Quiet Riot musically, but not lyrically. On such likable cuts as "You Know What to Do," "Co'Mon Rock," and "Loud 'n' Clear," Stryper managed to promote a religious message without being preachy. While the uptempo songs are decent, the ballads are hard to take. In fact, "You Won't Be Lonely" and "My Love I'll Always Show" are about as unbearably syrupy as it gets. ~ Alex Henderson

| | Tesla Great Radio Controversy CD (1989)
Lita CD music
$6.55 For their second Geffen Records studio release, Tesla unleashed an excellent set of bluesy metal and straight-rockin' '80s arena anthems on THE GREAT RADIO CONTROVERSY. With a title and theme derived from conflicting claims of who invented the radio made by Italian scientist and the band's namesake Guglielmo Marconi, the album strays a bit from the aqua-netted template of the glam metal era. Opting for a T-shirt and jeans image, front man Jeff Keith's sandpaper-coated vocals embody the band's emotionally energetic and slightly rootsy style. Guitarists Frank Hannon and Tommy Skeoch perfectly compliment each other's standout harmonic leads, which play nicely over Brian Wheat's solid low end and Troy Luccketta's time-keeping. This album also features the hit single "Love Song," which was a notable success for the band and received considerable MTV airplay, solidifying an ever-growing mainstream fan base.
Recording information: Bearsville Sound Studios, Bearsville, NY.
Photographers: Jodi Summers; Frank Hannon; Neil Zlozower; Jeff Keith; Troy Luccketta; Brian Wheat.

| | Europe Final Countdown CD (1986) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Lita music CDs
$7.59 Digitally remastered by Joseph M. Palmaccio (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
One of the most glorious launches in history, the title track for the thrice-platinum The Final Countdown is so bombastically brilliant, such glorious garbage, that this nuclear hair assault could only spew from the vacuous '80s. But the full-tilt follow-up "Rock the Night" rules also: "You know it ain't easy/Running out of thrills." "Carrie" comes off a consummate butane ballad. Meanwhile, the rest of the disc packs so much power that Swedish superheroes Europe get away with all the processed pretension. In fact, the lofty ambition of "Danger on the Track," "Ninja," and "Cherokee" (each as tasty as its title) combines with heated drive and hot delivery to meld The Final Countdown into a unique portrait of propulsive prog and a worthy addition to any hard rock collection. This is the story; this is the legend told by Teutonic guitars and predictable keyboards ringing pure and hurtling through each and every convention perfectly. The quintet's big-boy Epic inaugural, The Final Countdown deftly combines the Valhalla victory of Europe's heroic debut with the American poodle pomposity that devoured the band. You could live without The Final Countdown, but why? ~ Doug Stone

But full-tilt follow-up "Rock the Night" rules also: "You know it ain't easy/Running out of thrills." Sure, "Carrie" comes off a consummate butane ballad, but her sales figures account for this reissue. | | 7: The Best Of Stryper CD (2003) Remastered
Lita songs
$8.49 Recorded between 1984 & 2003. Includes liner notes by Michael Sweet.
Throughout rock history, all great bands spawn quite a bit of similar-sounding offspring -- and the mighty Van Halen were no different. Throughout the '80s, a plethora of VH disciples appeared on the scene -- many of which happened to also hail from the same locale, Hollywood. Musically, Stryper were quite similar to the Van Halen boys, but vocally, singer Michael Sweet was more a kin to Styx's Dennis DeYoung. The pairing of both styles won Stryper a large following, and for a stretch of several years, scored several MTV hits, all of which are neatly compiled on 2003's 7: The Best of Stryper. While Stryper's lyrical message did not reflect either the party-hearty (Mötley Crüe) or the "demonic" (W.A.S.P.) bands of the era, they were cut from the same musical cloth. As a result, Stryper were known primarily as a rock band ("Soldiers Under Command," "Free," etc.), even though they also specialized in schmaltzy power ballads ("Honestly," "Lady," etc.). Also, there was the odd moment when both styles merged, such as "Calling On You," and Stryper get credit for the unlikeliest cover tune for a pop-metal band -- Earth, Wind & Fire's "Shining Star" (perhaps only outdone by the Bulletboys tackling Tom Waits' "Hang On St. Christopher"). With all the expected favorites included here, the 18-track 7: The Best of Stryper is a much better Stryper compilation than 1991's paltry Can't Stop the Rock. ~ Greg Prato

| | Robin George Sweet Revenge CD (2007)
Lita CD music
$15.39 2008 archive release, a treat for lovers of melodic Hard Rock and fans of the enigma that is Glenn Hughes in particular. Recorded in 1989, these previously unreleased songs - written and produced by Robin George and recorded in his studio in Wolverhampton, UK - were the first step on the road back to the top for Glenn Hughes after his time in Black Sabbath. Mixing Hard Rock with the tougher side of Blue Eyed Soul that the man was to make his own in the 90s, the voice is excellent, the songs are second to none and the production and playing by Robin George are all that you would expect from ...
