Talk about releasing an album at the wrong time. In late 1991, it seemed like rock audiences worldwide had finally thrown up their hands in disgust with the fourth-rate hair metal bands that MTV and radio were pushing on the public, and in response, welcomed the likes of Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden with open arms. As a result, several hair metal bands that just a year or two earlier seemed like "the next big thing" within their genre were suddenly rendered obsolete -- including Danger Danger, who issued their sophomore effort, Screw It!, in October of 1991. Everything that a rock band could have done to seem like a total and utter anomaly was in place -- a sexist album cover (a buxom blonde riding in the lap of a huge biker-gorilla) and such oh-so-poetic song titles as "Slipped Her the Big One" and "Horny S.O.B" (not to mention the album's double-entendre title). Yes, folks, there's very little in the originality department here (they even steal a song title from Van Halen, with "Everybody Wants Some"), while the music overall appears to have been constructed in hopes of pleasing both the mainstream pop audience and hair-sprayed headbangers. As evidenced by releases like Screw It!, Kurt Cobain and company thankfully helped pull the plug on hair metal at exactly the right time. ~ Greg Prato

The combination of King and the well-oiled Philly rhythm section that powered hits by the O'Jays, Spinners, and Stylistics proved a surprisingly adroit one. Two huge hits came from this album, the Stevie Wonder/Syreeta Wright-penend title track and "I Like to Live the Love," both of them intriguing updates of King's tried-and-true style. ~ Bill Dahl

5 stars Overlooked Gem in the hardrock genre
Excellent overall album. Melodic rock with great guitar work. Standout songs include "Coming Home", "Don't Blame It On Love", and "Everybody Wants Some". This album, if released in 1987 would have been a chart topper.

5 stars Great Rock Album!
I agree with the other post - it this album had not come out amidst the Metallica/Motley Crue insurgency then it would have done great. This should have been #1 on the charts. This album is great for lovers of rock of any kind. Great songwriting and GREAT hooks! Standouts include "Crazy Nights" and "Everybody Wants Some". If you love rock, buy this album now.

The Four Horsemen were quite literally a shattered band come 1996. Five years on from their simplistic but infectious retro-rock debut, they'd been dropped by Def American, been abandoned by their main songwriter guiding force in founding guitarist Haggis, and, most heartbreaking of all, lost drummer Ken "Dimwit" Montgomery to a drug overdose. As the band's last remaining original members, it came down to guitarist Dave Lizmi and troubled singer Frank C. Starr (more on him later) to assemble a new lineup and attempt to shoulder the load themselves on the snidely named Gettin' Pretty Good at Barely Gettin' By. And they did an OK job. The album still featured much of the Four Horsemen's stripped-down, hard-rocking style, but standout cuts such as "Hot Rod" and the poignant "Song for Absent Friends" generally lacked the Southern Skynyrd flavor, and especially the power boogie AC/DC crunch of old. Instead, the album mostly resorted to a mellower, more soulful, decidedly sleeker Black Crowes-type groove for tracks like the title song and "Drunk Again" ...

They're baaack! Nearly a decade-and-a-half has passed since we last heard from one of hair metal's leading bands, Europe, and the group has returned with Start from the Dark. While the group has earned a bit of a bad rap over the years (their keyboard-heavy tale of Armageddon, "The Final Countdown," was voted one of the 'Most Awesomely Bad Songs of All Time' on VH1), there's no denying that under all the pretty ...

For a spell during the late '80s and early '90s, it seemed like almost every day there was a new hair metal band popping up on MTV, taking aim at joining the likes of Poison, Mötley Crüe, and Bon Jovi at the top of the mountain. Some (Skid Row, Winger, Slaughter, etc.) did manage to challenge the aforementioned groups, while bands like Danger Danger came oh so close before vanishing from view completely. Danger Danger enjoyed their 15 minutes of fame with their self-titled ...
