There aren't many musicians who can claim to have honed their chops in the 1910s, recorded a string of stellar jazz sides from the '20s through the early '50s, then taken a 20-year hiatus before making a stunning comeback in the '70s. Alberta Hunter is one such musician. Following a long "retirement" from music, during which she worked as a nurse, Hunter returned with a vengeance, recording music that, as always, straddled blues, jazz, and pop modes. The difference was that Hunter's voice, with 80 years of living built into it, was now much grittier and textured.

Hunter's 1980 recording AMTRAK BLUES helped endear her to a whole new generation of fans. With crisp production by John Hammond and the help of a tight-knit combo, Hunter sounds as vital and spirited as ever. Her voice, recorded close-up and high in the mix, is deep and finely nuanced, and she displays her skill equally on classic blues ("Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"), and on sprightly, uptempo numbers ("I'm Having a Good Time"). Overall, AMTRAK BLUES may be one of Hunter's most important and enjoyable recordings, testifying to her astounding trajectory and her ever-impressive abilities as a performer.

Despite his statement in the liner notes that "In an era where it is best to play it safe, I chose to take a risk...," there isn't much surprising or risky about young guitarist Joe Bonamassa's fifth studio album. Most of his previous releases have mixed blues covers with his own originals, all played with a rocker's attitude, volume and less-than-subtle approach. This one follows suit and even though he goes on to say that he "wanted to make a blues album, not a rock album that has blues on it," as in the past; it's impossible to claim that he has succeeded with You & Me. That doesn't make this a bad or disappointing disc; quite the contrary, it's a solid blues-rock release and arguably his best work to date. But as early as the second track, an original rocker titled "Bridge to Better Days," Bonamassa takes off on an early Free/Savoy Brown-styled stomper. Things settle down and get more rootsy on the following two slow blues tracks, although a lovely Bonamassa original, "Asking Around for You," adds strings, not exactly a touch most would associate with pure blues. Regardless, it's extremely effective and when the strings return on a nine-and-a-half-minute cover of Led Zeppelin's "Tea for One," it is a spine-tingling experience and possibly this album's finest moment. Drummer Jason Bonham, who is excellent throughout, ...

Johnny Winter Still Alive And Well CD  (1973)

Amtrak Blues album
CD $6.79  5 stars Top 500 Audio Samples
You might mistake this for a live record, but this is actually a 1973 studio release by the Texas blues guitar master. Winter's first release after a brief retirement/drying-out period, STILL ALIVE AND WELL, from the title on down, has the feeling of a major comeback, although Winter really hadn't been gone for very long. Looking hale and hearty on the cover--or as hale and hearty as a rail-thin albino can look, anyway--Winter sounds equally fit on the songs themselves. Produced by his longtime collaborator Rick Derringer, who also leads the tight and flashy band with his rhythm and second lead playing, the album is possibly the most pop-oriented release of Winter's tenure at Columbia. The band, which features Todd Rundgren on synthesizers and Mellotron (on a Johnny Winter album???) and Rundgren's associate Mark "Moogy" Klingman on piano, is probably mostly responsible for this, but Winter's amiable versions of the Stones' "Silver Train" and ...

FORMAT: CDRUNNING TIME: 64' 34''CATALOGUE: MDCP054TRACKS: 15DATE OF RELEASE: JULY 21st, 2007EXTRAS: Insert poster drawn by Arnaldo Baptista from Os Mutantes, plus booklet by Black Arrow Studio & Press (US)Since the early Nineties, Os Mutantes finally gained recognition as one of the most original, bizarre bands coming from Brazil during the psychedelic era. Thanks to the support of fans like Kurt Cobain, David Byrne and Beck, the Mutantes legend spread and their music, an effortless mix of pop and experimentalism that’s both playful and weird, suddenly reached new audiences. At last the impact made by Arnaldo Baptista, Sergio Dias and Rita Lee on future generations became clear. Now a bunch of musicians hailing from countries as diverse as Italy, United States, Brazil and United Kingdom, gather together on this disc to celebrate the wild imagination and the outstanding power of the Mutantes' songs. Nothing less than a labour of love, "Jardim Elétrico: A Tribute to Os Mutantes" is a way to remind us how great their music is, and how much the work of this band still reverberates through time. Some of the artists on this tribute are well-known, others still struggle in the underground, but what they have in common is an unabashed love for this trio and their crazy, lighthearted passion for fun and experimentation.Time hasn’t diminished the driving exuberance and the unmistakable vibe that is the real essence of Os Mutantes: they are still alive and kicking, playing out there and probably touring in your country. Look for them and you will even find a Jardim Elétrico!Tracklist:Stop The Wheel ...
