After leaving Mott the Hoople in early 1975, Ian Hunter quickly threw himself into recording this eponymous solo debut. Not surprisingly, it contains a lot of the glam rock charm of Hunter's old group: "The Truth, the Whole Truth, Nothing But the Truth" and "I Get So Excited" are fist-pumping tunes that combine punchy hard rock riffs with intelligent lyrics in a manner similar to Mott the Hoople's finest moments. However, Ian Hunter pulls off this grandiose sound without the overtly ornate production that defined the final Mott the Hoople albums because Mick Ronson's cleverly crafted arrangements manage to create a big wall of sound without utilizing a huge amount of instruments or overdubs. As a result, Ian Hunter's lyrics shine through in each song and show off his totally personalized mixture of attitude and intelligence: the legendary and oft-covered "Once Bitten, Twice Shy" is a cheeky, clever exploration of rock & roll's ability to corrupt the innocent, and "Boy" is a critique of a rocker who has allowed his pretensions to overpower his heart (many say this tune was aimed at fellow star and onetime Mott the Hoople producer David Bowie). Another highlight is "It Ain't Easy When You Fall," a moving tribute to a fallen friend that gracefully builds from delicate verses into a soaring chorus. The end result is a memorable debut album that gives listeners their hard rock fix and manages to engage their brains at the same time. Anyone interested in the finest moments of 1970s glam rock should give this classic a spin. ~ Donald A. Guarisco
This is Ian Hunter's first solo album.Q (11/94, p.140) - 3 Stars - Good - "...Hunter at his soul-baring best, having a stab at spoken word, on the raw `It Ain't Easy When You Fall/Shades Off,' and the sheer joy of rock'n'roll enshrined in `I Get So Excited' redeeming the album's flaws..." Uncut (p.126) - 3 stars out of 5 - "Hunter's fan-like feeling for the music's mythic value and earthy reality is still strong here." $20.29 Edo Kahn: singer/guitaristPeter Farley: bass/horns/vocalsNadav Kahn: sonic keys/harp/vocalsArt Wilson: drums/cello1704 is a gentle and complex album that arouses both mind and body. Produced by good pal/music lover, Ian Ball of Gomez, 1704 was recorded in a somewhat spontaneously haphazard style on portable recording equipment in various make-shift locations across the globe and finally mixed at Peter Gabriel's Real World Studios in a tiny town called Box, in the UK. Formed just over two years ago and having performed one show together, Gelbison recorded a self-titled EP (their first collaboration with Ball) in a Bondi lounge room and released it through their own label Cheap Lapels. The EP version of the track Modern Station found its way onto the Triple J airwaves not long after. This was followed by a buzz of activity including the album's recording, signing to Virgin Australia, a UK tour, and the initial success already garnered by Metal Detector, Homelands and Good God the first three singles off the album. ~~~~~~~~~~~~What the critic's are saying about "1704":"...from the far side of the Pacific: 1704, the debut album by Sydney's Gelbison, was produced by Ian Ball of the British ...

| | Earl Brothers Moonshine CD (2008)
Ian Hunter songs
$17.75 This is the newest CD(2008) by The Earl Brothers, there is one thing on which everyone seems to agree... There is something about this band's 'less is more' approach to songwriting, singing and musicianship that makes you stop whatever you're doing and take notice. The Buzz..."THE EARL BROTHERS HAVE GOT THE SOUL AND THE SONGS AND THE ATTITUDE THAT BROUGHT US ALL INTO BLUEGRASS MUSIC IN THE FIRST PLACE. THEIR SONGS CRY OF THE MOUNTAINS, OF THE PEOPLE AND OF THE TRADITIONS DOWN THROUGH THE AGES. BLUEGRASS IS ALIVE AND WELL."Chris HillmanPioneer of the genre known as 'Country Rock'. Worked with such notable bands as The Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and the Desert Rose Band. It's always a big event in my neck of the woods when a new Earl Brothers CD appears. I usually take the day off from work and stay at home--grilling red meat, drinking beerand blasting a few rounds through my . 45. I think you guys are on to something that'sso primeval, insistent, dark, old-time and thrilling that it just about defies description. I find myself completely mesmerized by your gothic Stanley Brothers sound. It just doesn't get anymore tough-edged and raw than tunes like "Going Walking," "Hell on the Highway," the title track and "Life Full of Trouble," which, if my ears aren't deceiving me sounds like it stays on just one chord throughout the piece. And what a chord itis!Congratulations, once again, on another job exceedingly well done. Dave HiggsNashville Public RadioBluegrass BreakdownThe Earl BrothersMoonshine EarlBrothers While overhauled in personnel, Robert Earl Davis's band retains its unique sound. Deliberately under-annunciated, hard scrabble vocals complement tight instrumentation that is dark, rough, and never fancy- the complete antithesis of the prevalent slick, high-browed bluegrass that is mostly ignored in this space. Original in sound, attitude and material, the Earl Brothers' third album finds the four-piece moving forward while retaining all the elements - troubles, whiskey, women, and death - fans have come to appreciate. The Earl Brothers' approach to bluegrass is so fresh and natural and their sound so identifiable that listeners are likely to either love or hate this California-based band. For me, Moonshine is one of the most notable bluegrass albums of the year. -Donald TeplyskeFreelance writerRoots music ColumnistKCBL / Backroads Bluegrass"First let me thank you very much for keeping me on your mailing list. I could pick it out anywhere. everything is top notch. your original material has the sound & feel of times past. | | Sean Roux Not Without Soul CD (2008)
Ian Hunter album
$10.15 The musical evolution of Sean Roux continues to be an ongoing journey. Each experience, whether as a vocalist, musician, producer, or studio engineer, adds to the essence of the artist. But Sean Roux can't merely be judged by the sum of his parts - at least not yet. There is still plenty of growth yet to be realized for this Raleigh, NC based artist. It is his life experiences that have brought Sean Roux to the next chapter of his music journey. With his latest effort, the Fairfax County, Va. native branches his sound out to include key elements previously not covered in his music. Roux's new CD, Not Without Soul, breaks new ground by delving into modern soul, with a pinch of neosoul vocal flavor added in for touch. By layering both soul instrumental and vocal arrangements into an alternative rock and pop sound, Not Without Soul accurately describes Roux's vision of his album. 'Not Without Soul began as a much larger project involving more musicians,' Roux says. 'I was trying to trump my last CD with a two-disc set. However, the project eventually became way too large for even that.' His two-disc aspirations aside, Roux's final cut of Not Without Soul is an eight-song ode to expressing intimacy and vulnerability and the walls that surround those feelings in a ...
