In a demonstration of late-1960s musical guerilla warfare, "Killing Floor," the first track of the debut album from the blues guitarist Mike Bloomfield's ambitious yet short-lived Electric Flag, juxtaposes a sample of a speech by then-President Lyndon B. Johnson with a stinging Bloomfield guitar salvo. Though this opener's pent-up energy isn't quite matched on the rest of the set--which combines the psychedelic rock of "Groovin Is Easy" and "Sittin' Around in Circles" with straight blues tracks such as the jumping-and-jiving "Wine" and the slow-burning "Texas"--it highlights Bloomfield's impressive, though unrealized vision of a band that would filter a wide variety of American music through a contemporary sensibility.Uncut (p.94) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Highlighted by the volatile Mike Bloomfield's piercing bluesy guitar, Buddy Miles' energetic drumming and Nick Gravenites' rich vocals..." For their second album, Sonny and Cher largely dropped both the overt Spectorisms and derivative folk-rock of their debut, 1965's LOOK AT US, instead refining the two into an utterly unique blend. There were few protest songs as dazzlingly-arranged as "Laugh At Me," originally released as a Sonny solo single. The follow-up "The Revolution Kind," included as a bonus track, shows the political leanings which would eventually get Sonny elected as a Republican congressman.

This 75-minute album, originally a double-LP (recorded live at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1970) is a valiant attempt at capturing the Association's concert sound on record. Unfortunately, it fails for several reasons, beginning with the fact that the instrumental mix is very bass-heavy -- even with adjustments to compensate, this overwhelms much of the rest of the band on several key numbers. Additionally, the group's singing, though more than adequate, lacks the presence needed to give their harmonies the necessary radiance to make the music fully attractive, coming off instead as anemic. The real problem is that cutting a live album was a thankless task for this group -- so much of their sound was dependent on a studio-driven perfection -- that live recording was an exercise in futility (let's put it this way -- the Beach Boys pulled this off more than once, but they had a resident genius around part of the time doing their arrangements; the Association: no genius in the ranks). ...

On their singles and EPs, the Horrors proved they'd done their post-punk and freakbeat homework. With their debut album, Strange House, they push their sound forward, distill it to its rawest essence, and give it a few funhouse mirror twists and turns for good measure. Almost half of the songs on the album already appeared on previous Horrors releases, but the ever-so-slightly cleaner production here gives more definition to their black-on-black sound. The band kicks off Strange House by revisiting their cover of Screaming Lord Sutch's "Jack the Ripper," which begins at a zombie-slow pace, then suddenly speeds up halfway through, transforming into a hurtling roller coaster of a song that makes a great introduction to Strange House's mix of campy humor, energy, and menace.
