It's perhaps easy to expect too much after the stellar debut single "Chains." That's not to say Arena's debut offers nothing to the listener; it could have been far worse, since top session men Tim and John Pierce and drummer Pat Mastelotto (the Rembrandts, King Crimson) don't appear for nothing. Even so, a lot of Don't Ask remains twee. However, there are good moments in the shape of showcase single "Chains," power ballad "Heaven Help My Heart" and the bouncy closing track "Standing Up." There's room for improvement then, although Arena can deliver some fine vocals, and David Tyson (Alannah Myles, Amanda Marshall) supplies some equally fine production. The gorgeous "Sorrento Moon" suggests Arena may yet become the Astrud Gilberto of Australia. ~ Kelvin Hayes

| | Tom Waits Glitter And Doom Live CDs (2009) Digipak
Don't Ask CD music
$13.84 Glitter and Doom Live, a double-disc set, marks Tom Waits' third live effort in his nearly 40-year career, each one summing up his career to the point of its release. The first, Nighthawks at the Diner issued in 1975 on Asylum, is regarded by many as one of the greatest live albums of all time. The second was Big Time, released during his tenure at Island in 1986. The musical performances on disc one of Glitter and Doom Live were culled from Waits' historic sold-out tour of the U.S. and Europe. He compiled and sequenced the set himself, intending to make them sound like a single show. The material leans, understandably, on his recordings with the Anti label. There are stellar performances here, such as "Get Behind the Mule" from The Mule Variations, "Trampled Rose" from Real Gone, and a haunting version of Leadbelly's "Fannin Street" from Orphans: Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards, to mention just three of the 17 cuts here. But he goes back to his Island albums too. For instance, there are completely re-visioned readings of "Lucky Day" and "I'll Shoot the Moon" from 1993's Black Rider, and a killer -- though equally revamped ...

| | Lightborn Angel Of Def CD (2004)
Don't Ask songs
$17.09 "A true lyricist on fire. This is real hip hop!"-PhilaElements Weekly"Progressive hip hop from the streets of Philly. An amazing MC with vision and hype beats."- Level 3 Rhino Alert "Where did this dude come from? This is amazing!" - Brooklyn Cypha"Soul force Hip hop". That is the term used to describe the style of music forged by Philadelphia MC Lightborn. From the section of West Philadelphia known as "Green Hell" where graffiti text intertwines with rusted barbed wire amid sprouts of green grass from Cobbs Creek breaking through from blackend concrete comes one of the most innovative artists in hip hop today. A DJ and MC since his childhood in the late eighties, "The Soular Beyond" uses his background in playing several live instruments to create his own original beats that are layered over with powerful and introspective rhymes designed to not only be heard but felt. With an intense, original sound of dark, often ominous drones and hard beats overcome by soulful, passionate lyrics, Lightborn emerges like a phoenix from the underground at a time where mediocrity and commercialism has often penetrated the expression of rap and disenchanted many true hip hop heads. From the pounding, driven prophecy of "Angel of Def", to the cosmic, surreal "I am the Rhino", to one of the most personal testimonies in music I have ever heard in "I am Never Home", Lightborn delivers in a style that is as intricate as the wild style graffiti on West Philly ...
