SINGLES is unusual among Alison Moyet's greatest hits anthologies in that it includes three hits by Yaz, her short-lived duo with Vince Clarke of Depeche Mode and Erasure fame. Those three early-1980s hits are pinnacles of synth pop, particularly the haunting "Only You," the Yaz song closest in sound and feel to the R&B-based adult contemporary pop of Moyet's solo career. Highlights include her powerful solo debut "Invisible" and the lovely "Wishing You Were Here." SINGLES also includes a duet with Ewan MacColl on his standard "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face."
Producers include: Pete Glenister, Mark Saunders, E.C. Radcliffe, Yaz, Tony Swain.Q (12/00, p.148) - 4 stars out of 5 - "...Inspiration to us all..." Q (7/95, p.146) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "...It's lopsided as far as the chart hits go, but the high standard of songwriting seldom falters." NME (Magazine) (6/3/95, p.50) - 7 (out of 10) - "...Occupying the difficult middle ground between Annie Lennox and Courtney Love, Moyet is your classic torch singer who likes cock fighting....This compilation...has all the singles on it, including the Yazoo ones, in the right order..." Singles album
$10.39 In seemingly random order, GOLD contains fourteen of Abba's twenty American hits (the remainder are on MORE ABBA GOLD); which is to say, it contains fourteen of the most delectable pop productions of the '70s and early '80s. "Dancing Queen," "Waterloo," "Knowing Me, Knowing You" and the other landmarks of upbeat melancholy are complex concoctions--all layered harmonies and brilliant keyboard arrangements. These songs don't easily fit into any pop timeline, which may be why Abba received much of their acclaim long after breaking up. What may have seemed like Euro-pop fluff in its day, has been revealed by time to be truly classic studio pop.
The Swedish band's songs had show-tune and '60s-pop roots, skirted around the edge of disco, and were an unspoken influence on new wave. Without them, Madonna's very existence would be highly unlikely. With its Latin beat and gospel harmonies, "Lay Your Love All Over Me," one of the five songs here that didn't chart in the U.S., sounds like the very source of "Like A Prayer." Like Madonna, Abba had a grandiose vision of pop's place in the world--"who could live without it, I ask in all honesty," is how they put it in "Thank You For The Music," their Broadway-like farewell gesture. Hearing these singles, its hard to ...
| | David Bowie Best Of Bowie CDs (2002) Bonus CD; Remastered; 2 CDS
Singles CD music
$19.49 This edition of BEST OF BOWIE will only be available 12.2.2003-3.31.2004.
Ably serving as a substitute for the excellent but out-of-print collection BOWIE: THE SINGLES 1969-1993, the two-CD BEST OF BOWIE serves as an outstanding career-spanning retrospective featuring material from as recent as 2002. Above all reflecting the visionary aptitude of a restless creative genius who switched into different musical guises the way some people change suits, these 38 cuts trace David Bowie's path from space-rock folkie ("Space Oddity") and glam god ("Ziggy Stardust") to blue-eyed soulster ("Young Americans"), and cutting-edge futurist ("Fashion").
21st-century kids might be aware of Bowie via covers by Nirvana ("The Man Who Sold The World") or the Wallflowers ("Heroes"), ...

| | Alison Moyet Turn CD (2007)
Singles album
$9.69 Released in her native U.K. in 2007, Alison Moyet's THE TURN is the earthy R&B singer's first solo album in four years, following 2003's THE VOICE. Belatedly released in the U.S. to coincide with the temporary reunion of her beloved early 1980s synth duo, Yaz (with Vince Clarke of Erasure and Depeche Mode), THE TURN is nonetheless far more in keeping with the jazzy R&B of her more recent solo albums. Written and recorded with Moyet's longtime musical collaborator, Pete Glenister, THE TURN also features three songs written for and performed in a West End stage play, SMALLER, which starred Moyet and legendary British comic Dawn French. Highlights include the first single, "One More Time."
Had Dusty Springfield still been making records in 2007 with her vocal power intact, she might have sounded like Alison Moyet does on Turn. The similarities lie not only in the singing, but also in the material, which mixes orchestrated pop/rock with a blue-eyed soul sensibility. There are important differences, though, chief among them the greater vibrato and stridency in Moyet's vocal delivery. The tracks are in an adult contemporary pop mold that's far above the usual standards ...

$20.39 | | Giant Time To Burn CD (1991)
Singles album
$5.95 Giant's second effort, 1991's Time to Burn is another excellent, melodic, hard rock album in the vein of Foreigner and Journey, but with the added sting of Dan Huff's incredible chops and blinding technique (especially on the title track). The rest of the band provides equally impressive musicianship throughout, and one is left with the feeling that this record would have been a monster smash had it been released a decade earlier. Though devout Christians, the members of Giant don't let their beliefs interfere with the music, and songs like "Chained," "Stay," "Without You," and "I'll Be There (When It's Over)" ...

| | These United States A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden CD (2008)
Singles music CDs
$12.09 These United States is the new DC - a wide-eyed amalgamation of psyche-folk and the punk rock ethic, a band of merry pranksters spinning something fiercely, unapologetically positive out of the sinking reality of an empire gone Titanic. At the helm of the lifeboat, Jesse Elliott, gonzo-journalist-turned-troubadour, whose rag-tag States have criss-crossed the continental U.S. and Europe for nearly 300 shows in their first two years of operations, supporting and sharing stages with the likes of Califone (Thrill Jockey), Richard Buckner (Merge), Page France (Suicide Squeeze), Someone Still Loves You Boris Yeltsin (Polyvinyl), Catfish Haven (Secretly Canadian), Karl Blau (K), Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter (Barsuk), and Georgie James (Saddle Creek). For his project’s debut release, Elliott called upon an old friend – David Strackany, known to the music world as Paleo, author and sole executor of last year’s remarkable Song Diary (365 songs in 365 days, what Paste Magazine called “a streetfight of freakish prolificacy”). The result of this collaboration, A Picture of the Three of Us at the Gate to the Garden of Eden, is a 36-minute allegorical whirlwind through time, space, and sound – think Paul Simon narrating an Andrew Bird master-minded break-in of Bowie’s near-infinite Labyrinth – to be released in March 2008. Between them, Elliott and Strackany roped in upwards of 30 DC- and Midwest-based musicians, and the mixing prowess of District stalwarts Chad Clark (Beauty Pill, Smart Went Crazy, producer for Fugazi, Dismemberment Plan) and T.J. Lipple (Aloha). The preliminary word? According to Daytrotter:It is, without being at all overly enthusiastic, one of the best records you will hear this year and it will make you feel completely human. You’ll feel your fingernails grow. You’ll start to understand what all of your facial muscles do when they’re not smiling or frowning. You’ll taste that blood as it finds all of your many cracks and detours.Touring tirelessly from Glasgow to San Francisco, New York to Paris to London, Portland (ME) to Portland (OR), El Paso to Amsterdam – and taking their cues as much from Walt Whitman as from Wilco – These United States have always seemed determined to prove that worldwide American manifestations can’t be all wrong all the time. Add to that mixture one bizarre genealogical twist: Elliott is the real, live, honest-to-god Midwestern descendant of one John Chapman, better known to the modern world as a DIY pioneer with a cooking pot on his head, a swagger in his step, and a mission in his mind – Johnny Appleseed. Perhaps 2008 will be the year to bear witness to the ...
