(3 Customer Reviews)
Drawing from a well of gothic imagery and dark overtones, this legendary hard rock quintet fused Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser's crunching guitar playing with sweeter pop overtones on the Top 40 hit "Burnin' For You." A particularly clever and often overlooked highlight of this comeback album is the horror movie-themed "Joan Crawford," of which a biting version shows up on the subsequent EXTRATERRESTRIAL LIVE.
Five years after the classic AGENTS OF FORTUNE and its hit single, "(Don't Fear) The Reaper," Blue Oyster Cult scored on the charts with 1981's FIRE OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN. Putting its best foot forward after a slight slide in popularity, BOC put together nine songs that included contributions from early collaborators Patti Smith, Richard Meltzer, and Sandy Pearlman. Fantasy writer Michael Moorcock (who co-wrote "Black Blade" on CULTOSAURUS ERECTUS) once again collaborated with Eric Bloom on "Veteran of the Psychic Wars," which was also used on the soundtrack to the animated classic HEAVY METAL.
Blue Oyster Cult: Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (vocals, guitar, bass); Eric Bloom, Joe Bouchard (vocals, bass); Albert Bouchard (vocals, synthesizer, drums); Allen Lanier (keyboards).

| | Blue Oyster Cult Secret Treaties CD (1974) Bonus Tracks; Remastered
Fire Of Unknown Origin CD music
$6.75 Also available in a 3-pack with BLUE OYSTER CULT and TYRANNY & MUTATION.
Recorded in 1974. Originally released on Columbia (32858). Includes liner notes by Lenny Kaye.
Digitally remastered by Vic Anesini (Sony Music, New York, New York).
While Blue Oyster Cult's third release, 1974's SECRET TREATIES, continued to expand the band's fervent following, it lacked the heavy metal intensity that made the band's sophomore release, TYRANNY AND MUTATION, so exceptional. While hard rock compositions abound on SECRET TREATIES, the vast space rock of the group's self-titled 1972 debut can be detected back in the mix, courtesy of mainstay BOC producers Murray Krugman and Sandy Pearlman. While the album didn't prove to be the Blue Oyster Cult's breakthrough success (AGENTS OF FORTUNE would do the trick two years later), SECRET TREATIES is held in high regard by longtime fans, and has subsequently reached gold certification.
The epic album ...

Fire Of Unknown Origin music CDs
$7.59 Released during the year that punk broke, Blue Oyster Cult's sixth album was the important follow-up to the hugely successful AGENTS OF FORTUNE. SPECTRES found the group continuing to craft material that mated a trademark guitar-driven sound with intelligent lyrics. Although many short-sighted critics labeled the band heavy metal, this Long Island quintet was far more creative than this classification would suggest.
Although guitarists Eric Bloom and Buck Dharma dominate many of these songs with high-flying solos, the pristine harmonies of songs such as "Golden Age of Leather" and "Fireworks" are an often forgotten facet ...

Fire Of Unknown Origin music CDs
$9.45 One of singer Sandy Denny's finest post-Fairport Convention outings, 1972's SANDY finds the beloved U.K. folk singer backed by top-tier musicians, including Fairport peers Richard Thompson and Dave Swarbrick, as well as renowned pedal-steel guitarist "Sneaky" Pete Kleinow. "It'll Take a Long Time" opens the album in a beautifully sleepy manner, allowing Denny's emotive voice to shine, while her cover of Bob Dylan's "Tomorrow Is a Long Time" veers down a country road, with Kleinow's plaintive guitar lines setting the mood. Although Denny remains best known for her work with Fairport Convention (and, of course, her vocals on Led Zep's "The Battle of Evermore"), this disc is on par with many of her best moments with any ensemble.
These 16 songs offer the briefest possible introduction to this remarkable singer and songwriter. THE BEST OF SANDY DENNY was compiled by Joe Boyd (who produced most of her recordings), and husband Trevor Lucas. The tracks are culled from the four solo albums that were released during her lifetime, three Fairport Convention releases, and work from the short-lived band Fotheringay, in which Lucas was a member.
The tracks run the gamut from orchestral splendor ("The Lady") to British folk-rock ("Tam Lin"). There are two songs by Richard Thompson (including a remarkable rendition of "For Shame of Doing Wrong"), but the bulk of the material was written by Denny herself. Denny possessed one of the most spiritually captivating voices of her era and wrote some bona fide classic songs. The set closes with one of her very finest and most beloved numbers, "Who Knows Where the Time Goes."
Sandy Denny recorded this, her first album in 1967, a year before joining Fairport Convention. THE ...

| | Finntroll Jaktens Tid CD (2001) Import
Fire Of Unknown Origin songs
$23.45 The press release calls Jakens Tid "trollish hoedown metal," which is to say that Finntroll incorporates some of the folk- and polka-based musics indigenous to their native Finland into their Wagnerian death metal. The fusion of styles apparently began as a drunken experiment, and it's hard to tell whether the resulting humor was intended or not. Indeed, it is hard to listen to this Tolkein-esque death metal square dance without experiencing flashbacks to Spinal Tap's Stonehenge scene. Although Finntroll's synthesis of traditional Finnish music and black metal is worth noting for its adventurousness, it falls short of its ambitions: to be an eerie and hostile new genre in the metal world. Rather, it sounds prankish and silly -- how could ...
