| | Herbie Hancock Future Shock CD Herbie Hancock Discography of CDs
Digitally remastered by Howie Weinberg (Masterdisk, New York, New York).
By the time he teamed with producer Bill Laswell in 1983, Herbie Hancock was already an influential jazz pianist who had broken significant musical ground. But FUTURE SHOCK was an experimental, booty-shaking departure that plucked Hancock's visionary music from the rarified air of the jazz scene and put it back on the street where it belonged. The album's techno brew of irresistible space funk and radical turntable scratching (courtesy of Africa Bambaataa protege Grandmaster D.S.T.) was not only forward-looking pop music, but the troupe of break-dancing robots featured in the award-winning video for "Rockit" helped propel hip-hop and MTV into homes coast to coast.
Primitive drum-machine beats get a solid live kick from Jamaican funkateer Sly Dunbar and Latin percussionist Daniel Ponce, while Herbie manipulates a bank of evocative synthesizers and Laswell stitches it all together with invigorating Kraftwerk style. FUTURE SHOCK is intelligent dance music with relentless, industrialized rhythms that resonate-even deeper on this remastered disc. Of the three electronic albums Hancock produced in his "Techno Trilogy" (including SOUND SYSTEM and PERFECT MACHINE), the revelations of FUTURE SHOCK remain some of the most inspired and fun.
Recorded at OAO Studio, Brooklyn, New York. Includes an interview with Bill Laswell.
Personnel: Herbie Hancock (keyboards); Grand Mixer D.S.T. (vocals, turntables); Pete Cosey (guitar); Bill Laswell (electric bass); Sly Dunbar (drums); Bernard Fowler, Roger Trilling, Nicki Skopelitis (background vocals).

Future Shock album
$7.59 For many years, Patty Smyth inexplicably lacked a hits compilation, but Columbia/Legacy finally issued the single-disc Greatest Hits in the fall of 1998. Drawing from both her solo recordings and her time with Scandal, from her recordings for both Columbia and MCA, the 16-track contains all of her hits, including "Goodbye to You," "The Warrior," "Hands Tied," "Beat of a Heart," and "Sometimes Love Just Ain't Enough," her duet with Don Henley. The enticements for hardcore fans -- two new Matt Serletic-produced recordings ("Wish I Were You," which is also on the Armageddon soundtrack, and "Carnival Lights"), plus an unreleased cut from Never Enough -- aren't particularly noteworthy, but for most fans, both casual and serious, it's a blessing to have all of the hits in one place, even if it's frustrating that the disc isn't sequenced in chronological order. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Includes liner notes by David Wild.
Compilation producer: Al Quaglieri.
Engineers include: Gary Tole.
Personnel: Patty Smyth (vocals); Don Henley (vocals); Carlos Goméz (guitar, congas); Keith Mack, Eric Bazilian, Zack Smith, William Wittman (guitar, background ...
| | Jaco Pastorius Word Of Mouth CD (1981)
Future Shock CD music
$10.45 WORD OF MOUTH was Jaco Pastorius' the first solo group recording, and it does a good deal to substantiate the widely held claims concerning the bassist's genius and wizardry. As a technician, Pastorius was untouchable, and his radical, melodic approach (he seems to play both rhythm and lead at once) forced a generation of bassists to reconceptualize their relationship to the instrument.
Pastorius' skills are on full display ...
| | Michael Buble It's Time CD (2005)
Future Shock music CDs
$11.65 Michael Buble's third major US release (including the mostly live COME FLY WITH ME) stays on message--this young Canadian loves the lush, swaying music of his parents' and grandparents' generations. Buble's albums, however, are much more than mere back-in-the-day exercises. The production and arranging of David Foster (Celine Dion, Josh Groban) is eclectic in a way that firmly places the tunes at the dawn of the 21st century, and, more importantly, Buble possesses the chops and sense of style to re-imagine the adult-contemporary vocal genre in a distinctive manner. In addition to standards by Gershwin and Porter, Buble embraces a variety of sounds, from Motown ("How Sweet It Is") to bossa nova ("Quando, Quando, Quando" with Nelly Furtado) to the Beatles ("Can't Buy Me Love" with a "She Loves You" tag). With his smooth croon and charming persona, Buble is a natural performer, ...

Future Shock album
$10.99 Any doubts about the incongruity of jazz icon Herbie Hancock covering singer-songwriter extraordinare Joni Mitchell will be obliterated on the first journey through RIVER: THE JONI LETTERS. For starters, the premise is not especially incongruous. Hancock has had a long, adventurous career in which he's traversed genres and masterfully blended styles, while Mitchell has always been deeply influenced by jazz as both a composer and a singer. RIVER features many of Mitchell's finest songs, stunning in their own right and reinterpreted beautifully by Hancock, plus a stellar assortment ...

Future Shock songs
$9.89 This collection celebrates the 10th anniversary of Rpm Records. Tracks can be traced back to 1960 and include styles ranging from psychedelia to R&B.
Label samplers really have primary value to the label, rather than to consumers, serving as a promotional survey of sorts that might give interested parties an idea of the range of sounds issued by a company. It would be a strange person indeed that would make a compilation tape of the 25 tracks on this CD, which are unified primarily by their chronological era: every song save Polly Browne's 1978 disco tune "Angel" is from 1960-1970. It's odd to jump from an early-'60s P.J. Proby obscurity to an excerpt of John Kennedy's speech just prior to his assassination, then to fierce British R&B by the Syndicats, fey femme-sung mid-'60s Brit-pop, psychedelia by Tomorrow, soundtrack music from Les Reed, MOR pop from Paul Jones, folk-rock from Tim Rose, and so forth. Still, RPM ...
