Guitarist Jim Hall is the sort of musician who displays such technical expertise, imaginative conception, and elegance of line and phrase that almost any recording of his is worth hearing. Still, CONCIERTO ranks among the best albums of his superb catalogue. For starters, the personnel here is a jazz lover's dream come true. Paul Desmond (saxophone), Chet Baker (trumpet), Roland Hanna (piano), Ron Carter (bass), and Steve Gadd (drums) are on board, creating--along with Hall--one of the highest profile lineups ever put to tape.
Yet CONCIERTO is not about star power and showboating. As subtle, nuanced, and considered as any of Hall's output, CONCIERTO's ensemble playing demonstrates great group sensitivity and interplay, giving precedence to mood and atmosphere over powerhouse soloing. Conductor and arranger Don Sebesky evinces a chamber ambience from the sextet on "You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To," the smoky "The Answer Is Yes," and the Hall centerpiece "Concierto de Aranjuez."
Includes four bonus tracks and an expanded booklet.
Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on April 16 & 23, 1975. Includes liner notes by Steve Futterman.
Reissue producer: Didier C. Deutsch.
Personnel: Jim Hall (guitar); Don Sebesky (conductor); Paul Desmond (alto saxophone); Chet Baker (trumpet); Roland Hanna (piano); Ron Carter (bass); Steve Gadd (drums).
Producer: Creed Taylor.
Down Beat (12/97, p.94) - 5 stars (out of 5) - "This is a landmark recording....CONCIERTO has a timeless quality, a blend of beautiful melodic playing and bravado that speaks from the first comfortable, swinging notes..." Mojo (Publisher) (6/02, p.125) - "...A blue-chip, all-star blow..." Jim Hall Concierto Songs | 1. | You'd Be So Nice to Come Home To | $0.99 | |

Concierto album
$14.29 Singer Eva Cassidy achieved posthumous fame with SONGBIRD, an anthology of her finest moments. During her lifetime, however, Cassidy made a name for herself in Washington, D.C., where she lived and regularly performed. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY captures Cassidy in her element running through a list of standards like "What a Wonderful World" and contemporary favorites like "Bridge Over Troubled Water."
While Cassidy's choice of material might seem somewhat stock, her singing is anything but. Her clear, guileless voice dazzles in both its technical facility and its emotional expressiveness, and it is easy to hear why she had a dedicated local ...
| | Paul McCartney Unplugged (The Official Bootleg) CD (1991) England
Concierto CD music
$10.49 This all-acoustic performance was taped for an MTV "Unplugged" show in April 1991. It was released in a limited edition of 250,000 copies in the U.S.
Released after the studied, meticulous Flowers in the Dirt, the live acoustic concert album Unplugged was a breath of fresh air, and it remains one of the most enjoyable records in McCartney's catalog. Running through a selection of oldies -- not only his own, but Beatles and rock & roll chestnuts -- McCartney is carefree and charming, making songs like "Be-Bop-a-Lula" and "Blue Moon of Kentucky" (which finds Paul melding Bill Monroe with Elvis) sound fresh. But the real revelations of the record are the songs McCartney hauls out from his debut -- "That Would Be Something," "Every Night," and "Junk" -- which sound lovely and timeless, restoring them to their proper place in his canon. They help make Unplugged into a thoroughly enjoyable minor gem. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine

| | Whitesnake Starkers In Tokyo CD (1998) (Import) Germany; United Kingdom
Concierto music CDs
$7.55 STARKERS IN TOKYO captures Whitesnake, live in concert in Japan.
Whitesnake's grip on the U.S. record-buying public may have lessened considerably by the late '90s, but in other parts of the world (especially Japan), David Coverdale and company still reigned supreme. Keeping in step with the unplugged craze of the decade, Coverdale and longtime guitarist Adrian Vandenberg united for such a performance in the land of the rising sun, resulting in the release of 1998's Starkers in Tokyo. Anyone wondering if Coverdale can still cut it vocally all these years later will be pleasantly ...
