Celebrating just over ten years together, and still progressing, one of Ireland's best instrumental ensembles show how they've done it, and it's still magic. What sets them apart is the vivid interaction of instruments and the versatility of the musicians and the arrangements. You can have one track with a pair of whistles and a flute (as on "The Miller of Drohan") or strip things down to guitar, fiddle, and double bass with "Punch." A couple of early tracks, including the opener, "Morning Nightcap" have been re-recorded with the latest lineup, while many of the cuts from earlier albums have fresh mixes. Lúnasa stand as the heirs to the Bothy Band for their style, which has more freedom than most Irish bands, but it's a freedom that's born out of great instrumental discipline and technique. This may stand as a best-of, but even so every moment is a delight, moving from one wonder to the next, always with a strong sense of daring and adventure. There's also the sense that, just over a decade along, the story is barely beginning, which makes it all the more exciting. The playing is superb, the imagination even better, and it's no wonder they're already legends. ~ Chris Nickson
Lúnasa: Donogh Hennessy (guitar, guitars, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, steel guitar, nylon-string guitar); David Odlum (guitar, acoustic guitar); Tim Edey, Paul Meehan (guitars); Conor Brady (acoustic guitar, electric guitar); Sean Smyth (fiddle, whistle); Trevor Hutchinson (cello, bass instrument, double bass); Kevin Crawford (flute, bamboo flute, whistle, tin whistle, bodhran); Michael McGoldrick (flute, Uilleann pipe); Cillian Vallely (whistle, Uilleann pipe); John McSherry (Uilleann pipe); David Hingerty (percussion).Dirty Linen (p.78) - "[T]his is a great collection. Favorites among the 16 tracks include the sprightly 'Leckan Mor,' the slow-burning 'Black River,' and an exciting new version of 'Morning Nightcap' that may well sear your speaker cabinets." Story So Far...
$11.29 Jack Casady first came to fame as an original member of the Jefferson Airplane and later, Hot Tuna. The first solo album (at age 59) from this well-traveled and prolific bassist, Dream Factor, is a mixed affair. Unlike most rock bass-playing frontmen, Casady does not sing, so his contributions to his debut are relegated to the occasional bass solo, and as co-writer of nearly all the tracks. His bass playing is more innovative and inspirational than his songwriting, which results in a passable Southern rock, folk, and blues album. Casady calls in friends from Gov't Mule (drummer Matt Abts and guitarist Warren Haynes), along with Little Feat guitarist Paul Barrére, Ivan ...

Story So Far...
$11.25 Though its cover art and title allude to Legend (1978), Poco's only real blockbuster album and last of any true merit, Running Horse, reaches back no further than the group's last studio album, 1989's Legacy, a cobbled together reunion album produced in part by Richard Marx. The production on Running Horse is equally weak, tentative, and thin, with dated highly guitar ...

| | Leper's Pen Rarities, Vol. 1 CD (2002)
Story So Far...
$10.15 Leper's Pen releases a collection of previously unreleased songs from past recording sesions combined with a few new tunes. Singer/songwriter Bill "The Thrill" Galetka once again reaches into his lyrical book of magic and comes up with some great songs. Listen as his wonderful melodies dance along to such Leper's Pen classics as "Looking Back," "Rust," and "Kiss Of The Moon." Also released for the first time is Bill's tribute to the victims of 9/11, "We Will Stand."Notes from the artist:Where the songs came from....."LOOKING BACK": Digging through the old tapes, I came across an upbeat drum track with acoustic guitar on it. It must have been a musical idea that got lost along the way. While putting this project together I thought this would be an excellent chance to inject some new grooves. Since this project is a collection of odds and ends that were sometimes recorded in-between actual album sessions, it seemed that I was once again right inside one of those moments. The lyrics were inspired by looking back through the years with this group of songs. And then I just ran with the ball from there. It's a fun rocker that was a natural choice to start things off."'CROSS THE CORNER": One of two songs (the other was Meet Me At The Border) written between the Murky Depths sessions and Songs From The Leper's Pen. I wrote these two songs for a friend as a personal and special gift."FRAGILE GIRL": This song was written shortly after the first time I saw Tori Amos perform in 1994. I sent a copy to her fanclub in an attempt to get it to her but never heard a response. It was a sort of thank you for her having the courage to give her music to the world after all she has been through. Or maybe it was a crush. I took this opportunity to re-mix the song as the original has only 3 acoustic guitars and vocals. "BIG SMILEY FACE": This song was left off of the Songs From The Leper's Pen project partially because of the sheer amount of songs I had at the time and also because it was another song in the people's key of G. It came from ...
