The self-titled 1972 debut is represented only by the fantastic "10538 Overture," thereby beginning the revisionism that almost entirely eliminates the band's co-founder, Roy Wood, from its history. The somewhat disappointing ELO II has two abridged selections, "Kuiama" and an obvious cover of "Roll Over Beethoven," but after that misstep, it's one excellent hunk of mid-'70s pop-rock after another, with the sultry "Showdown" and the plaintive ballad "Can't Get It Out of My Head" particularly standing out. The enjoyable album track "Boy Blue" is also a highlight.
Electric Light Orchestra includes: Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, keyboards); Kelly Groucutt (bass); Bev Bevan (drums, percussion).
In 1975, the Electric Light Orchestra crossed over from cult favorite to mainstream superstars with the Top-20 hits "Evil Woman" and "Strange Magic." The band's label, United Artists, took this golden opportunity to introduce ELO's new fans to the band's extensive back catalogue with the nine-track compilation.

$14.15 When David Bowie recorded what became DAVID LIVE at Philadelphia's Tower Theatre in July 1974, he had fully made the leap from Ziggy Stardust and landed feet-first into the shoes of the Thin White Duke. Despite announcing his retirement from live performance the year before, Bowie seemed no worse for wear fronting a ten-piece directed by future LETHAL WEAPON composer Michael Kamen and featuring new guitarist Earl Slick and horn player David Sanborn. This 2-CD set finds the chameleonic performer mixing in Ziggy-era classics such as "Rock 'N' Roll Suicide" with material from DIAMOND DOGS ("Rebel Rebel," "1984"), ALADDIN SANE ("Cracked Actor") and HUNKY DORY ("Changes"). The fullness of the horn section and the style of his back-up band give this set a soulful tilt powered by Slick's ballsy playing. This, along with a cover of the Stax nugget "Knock On Wood," pointed at Bowie's immersion in a Philly soul direction ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's artistic high-water mark.
Jeff Lynne reportedly regards this album and its follow-up, Out of ...

ELO was big enough by 1974 that some people actually suggested that ELDORADO featured Satanic backward-masking. Of course, the idea was ludicrous; but the band playfully responded by adding a backward message to "Fire on High," the opening instrumental ...
