| | Dead Or Alive Rip It Up CD Dead Or Alive Discography of CDs
One of the great things about the 1980s was the way the decade broke so many of the late 1970s' rules. In the late '70s, many punk rockers hated heavy metal as much as they hated disco, but as much animosity as the punk and arena rock factions felt for one another, they were united in their support of the silly death-to-disco movement. Then, in the 1980s, all of that changed. Just as punks, metalheads, and arena rockers were forming alliances and exchanging musical ideas in the 1980s, the decade found a variety of rockers and new wavers embracing funk, disco, and dance music -- clearly, the rules of the late 1970s were being broken in a major way. In the 1980s, no one merged pop/rock with dance-pop, Hi-NRG, and Euro-disco more perfectly than Dead or Alive, whose Rip It Up provides a nonstop dance mix of many of the group's essential hits. Produced by the Stock, Aitken, and Waterman team, gems like "You Spin Me Round," "Brand New Lover," "Something in My House," and "My Heart Goes Bang" have as much pop-rock aggression as they do dance-floor appeal. Rockers loved Dead or Alive, and the strong Beatles influence on "I'll Save You All My Kisses" is hard to miss. But Rip It Up is just as essential from a dance-pop/Hi-NRG standpoint. For those making their first Dead or Alive purchase, this album would be an excellent starting point. ~ Alex Henderson Rip It Up Review

| | Beyonce I Am...Sasha Fierce CD (2008) Bonus Track; Deluxe Edition
Rip It Up CD music
$9.99 I AM. SASHA FIERCE represents another change of pace for Beyoncé. Unlike the relatively streamlined, retro-soul inflected B'DAY, I AM... is a sprawling two-disc set designed to reflect two conflicting sides of Beyoncé's musical personality. The first disc sports reflective, sometimes moody ballads, while the second, attributed to Beyoncé's brash alter ego, Sasha Fierce, is loaded with propulsive dance-floor fillers. Except for this stylistic divide, I AM. pays only nominal attention to its supposed concept, focusing instead on a set of excellent, radio-ready songs--neatly avoiding the possibility of I AM. becoming some sort of Chris Gaines-style conceptual disaster. Though the second disc, which boasts the synth-drenched lead single, "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)," is more immediately gratifying, the impeccably produced ballads of the first disc represent a vast improvement on the often awkward torch songs that weighed down Beyoncé's first solo record.
In non-Deluxe Edition form, Beyoncé's third solo studio album is as concise as 2006's B'day, but it is divided into two discs as a way to emphasize the singer's distinct personalities. It's a gimmick, of course -- a flimsy one. Revealed through interviews ...
| | Stevie Wonder Definitive Collection CD (2002)
Rip It Up music CDs
$10.39 Missing in action for much of the 1990s, Stevie Wonder is a living legend whose consistent creative output is sorely missed. THE DEFINITIVE COLLECTION provides a snapshot overview of Wonder's stellar legacy starting back in 1963 as a teen musical prodigy with the exuberant "Fingertips Part 2." This jubilant tune, showcasing Wonder's much-touted facility on the chromatic harmonica, is a powerful harbinger of things to come. Along the way are classics that find this Michigan native going from being a one-man Motown hit machine to a young artist whose vision eschewed singles-based sensibilities for album-long artistic statements.
Wonder's '60s gems include "I Was Made to Love Her," "For Once in My Life," and "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours." Of course, his '70s work is just as stunning, particularly socially conscious numbers like "Higher Ground" and "Living for the City." Equally stellar if less political are this legend's tributes to Duke Ellington ("Sir Duke"), Bob Marley ("Master Blaster ...

Rip It Up songs
$9.99 Black Eyed Peas, the hip-hop crossover juggernaut that propelled singer Fergie and producer Will.I.Am to superstardom, have, since 2003's ELEPHUNK, been audaciously plugging away at their bombastic but lighthearted style of rap-cum-dance pop--an effort that has translated to a run of successful chart-topping singles including "My Humps," "Pump It," and "Don't Phunk with My Heart." Eager to follow up on the platinum-selling success of 2005's MONKEY BUSINESS, Black ...
| | Leona Lewis Echo CD (2009)
Rip It Up album
$11.18 The goal of Leona Lewis' 2007 debut, Spirit, was to prove that an X Factor winner could be a phenomenon not just in the U.K., but in the rest of the world. The goal of her second album, 2009's Echo, is to prove that success was no fluke, to build upon "Bleeding Love" and turn Lewis into an actual diva. Certainly, Echo in any of its incarnations -- its song listings are tailored for individual markets, with the U.K. getting a cover of Oasis' "Stop Crying Your Heart Out," while the U.S. gets a second song co-written by Justin Timberlake -- uses the chilly, synthesized "Bleeding Love" as its foundation, creating a sheet of sound equal parts Euro-pop and modern American R&B. As opposed to the often-stuffy Spirit, this is proudly modern, and if the sounds emanating from the two sides of the Atlantic might seem to be aesthetically opposed, they're both producer-driven music constructed layer by layer from rhythm to the vocal, where the overall sound matters more than what's being sung. Which isn't to say that Lewis doesn't sing the hell out of the songs on Echo: she has an uncanny gift ...

Rip It Up songs
$34.89 Long-lauded for the passion of his live show, German reggae singer Patrice (born Patrice Bart-Williams) has finally released an album that showcases this, 2006's Raw & Uncut: Live in Paris. The CD version contains 12 live tracks plus one previously unreleased studio cut, "Don't Cry" (the DVD has 18 live tracks and four bonus ones), the majority of them from Patrice's last record, 2005's Nile, including "Africanize Dem," "Victoriously," "Rememba," and "Today" (which is called "Change Today" here), though there are two songs from How Do You Call It? ("Music" and "Sunshine") as well as two from his record with Silly Walks Movement ("Everyday Good" -- called simply "Everyday" -- and "Feel It Now"). The singer is backed by his Shashamani Band, who complement his voice well, and add elements of funk, soul, blues, rock, and hip-hop to their reggae-centric sound. Patrice is clearly heavily inspired by Bob Marley, and it shows, not only in his intonation and phrasing ...

Rip It Up CD music
$13.19 Of all the popular Swing Era (circa 1934-1946) big-band leaders, one of the most forward was clarinetist Artie Shaw. In the early `50s, when many of his contemporaries disbanded their orchestras or peddled nostalgia, Shaw embraced the then-new sounds in jazz, mainly bebop. The double-disc LAST RECORDINGS features the last go-`round of Shaw's small group from 1954. His band included some of jazz's most durable and progressive players: Hank Jones on piano, Tal ...
