On 1977's GO FOR YOUR GUNS the Isley Brothers can be heard modifying their sound yet again to suit the times. The group's usual wild-card eclecticism is streamlined here, through their previous incarnations as smooth soulsters, purveyors of guitar-based psychedelia, and edgy funk-rockers can be heard on "Footsteps in the Dark," "Voyage to Atlantis," and "Livin' in the Life," respectively. What marks GO FOR YOUR GUNS is the unified sound and clean production of the album, which brings the band's diverse styles under one aesthetic umbrella.
The opening cut, "The Pride," has a steady, four-on-the-floor beat with a bit of disco-funk sheen, and sets the tone for the album. Thumping, popping bass and tight, rhythmic grooves are at the forefront here, but the Isleys still surprise, especially with secret weapon Ernie Isley on board throwing out blistering, Hendrix-inspired guitar leads (as on "Climbin' Up the Ladder" and the driving instrumental title track). As always, there is plenty of soulful singing to be found; the Isleys' vocal style has lost none of its luster here. This is a fine album of classic late-'70s funk from one of music's most talented, enduring families.

Much is made of the fact that the members of the Average White Band were pale-faced Scots who somehow managed to be funky as all get-out, but the truth is that AWB was simply one of the tightest R&B/funk combos of the 1970s, regardless of ethnicity and nationality. The band's fourth album continues the momentum of its predecessors by offering more lock-step grooves and slippery bass lines peppered with clarion horns and memorable vocal refrains. The title track, an R&B hit in 1975, is a case in point.

1975's The Heat Is On was the third album that the Isley Brothers recorded with their 3 + 3 lineup, and by that time, the lineup had really perfected its attractive soul/rock sound. The Isleys were providing great R&B long before keyboardist Chris Jasper, bassist Marvin Isley, and the distinctive guitarist Ernie Isley came on board in 1973; nonetheless, the newcomers added a lot to the group and helped it provide some of its best recordings. For as long as I can remember, I have been involved in the music making process. Although my passion lies with Hip Hop, I've spent plenty of time honing my skills over the years in a variety of different ways. I marched alongside the other “band geeks” at high school football games and competitions; and also played sax for an underground Ska band called The Specs. We were ten guys in a van with all of our gear and only enough money for one room. At the gigs, me and another player had to wait outside until it was time to play because we were under age. After the shows, we would split the money and barely have enough for gas to get home and chips and soda for our long drive back to L.A. The money never mattered. It was always about the journey, the thrill of the show, and the respect from my peers. It was this mentality that got me hooked on performing live shows. As I got older, the songs may have changed but the passion remained. A guest list, a few drink tickets, and we were there. My group, The Gift Shop, spent many nights performing for empty clubs, but we were still there. This definitely made us appreciate the crowded nights and packed clubs even more.
