After the breakup of Deep Purple in 1976, guitarist Tommy Bolin wasted little time beginning work on his second solo album, Private Eyes. While it was more of a conventional rock album than its predecessor, Teaser (which served primarily as a showcase for his guitar skills and contained several jazz/rock instrumentals), it was not as potent. The performances aren't as inspired as those on Teaser or even those on Bolin's lone album with Deep Purple, Come Taste the Band, although there a few highlights could be found. The nine-minute rocker "Post Toastee" merges a long jam section with lyrics concerning the dangers of drug addiction, while "Shake the Devil" is similar stylistically. But Bolin wasn't simply a hard-rocker; he was extremely talented with other kinds of music: the quiet, acoustic-based compositions "Hello, Again" and "Gypsy Soul," and the heartbroken ballad "Sweet Burgundy." With his solo career starting to take shape (after the album's release, he opened for some of rock's biggest names: Peter Frampton, Jeff Beck, Rush, ZZ Top, etc.), Bolin's life was tragically cut short at the end of the year due to a drug overdose in Miami, FA. ~ Greg Prato

Personnel includes: Norma Jean Bell (saxophone).

A mix of soft and hard rock from the late 70's. Great guitar, hypnotic lyrics. I bought this album just to get a copy of Bustin' Out For Rosey, great song.

Private Eyes
CD $22.09  4.7 stars Top 500
This 1975 first outing by the late rock-guitar virtuoso Tommy Bolin includes "Homeward Strut," "Marching Power" and "Lotus." After performing in a variety of bands since the late '60s, Bolin finally released his first solo album in 1975. Teaser is an impressive display of the guitarist's prowess and range, and is a natural progression from the previous Bolin-dominated James Gang albums Bang and Miami and his work with drummer Billy Cobham. The album features heavy doses of jazz-rock fusion (furthered by guests Jan Hammer, Dave Sanborn, and Michael Walden) in the instrumentals "Homeward Strut" and "Marching Powder," and straight-ahead rock in tracks like "The Grind." Bolin was always equally adept at subtleties, and the ballad "Dreamer" and the exotic "Savannah Woman" (with percussion from Phil Collins) represent this stylistic range here. Overshadowed historically by his guitar dynamics, Bolin's understated yet strong vocals are another selling point. Teaser is a stronger album than its one successor, the uneven Private ...

Sonically, Grand Funk's second live album, 1975's CAUGHT IN THE ACT, is a major improvement over the one-dimensional sound of its predecessor, 1970's LIVE ALBUM. The performances throughout CAUGHT IN THE ACT are consistent and energetic, resulting in great versions of such GFR classics as "Footstompin' Music," "Closer to Home," "Shinin' ...

Combining layered vocals with a heavily looped guitar sound, "Until We Sleep" begins ABOUT FACE with an almost Byrds-like quality, while the gentleness of the acoustic opening to the ballad "Murder" disguises its homicidal subject matter. Both "Love On the Air," and "All Lovers are Deranged," are distinguished by lyrics written by Pete Townshend, and "Blue Light" is an attempt at funk with a Floydian flavor. Gilmour's ...

Two For The Show
Kansas Two For The Show CD  (1978)

Private Eyes
CD $6.29
By the late '70s, Kansas had not only established themselves as one of America's most adventurous progressive rock bands; they even had a number of Top 20 hits to their credit. And as they finally paused for a breath after a string of five increasingly successful studio albums, it made perfect sense to fill the gap with a live album. Originally released as a double-vinyl set, Two for the Show is a sprawling, mind-boggling affair that juggles such overblown epics as "Journey from Mariabronn" and the self-explanatory "Magnum Opus" with mandatory hit singles "Carry on Wayward Son" and "Dust in the Wind." The former will undoubtedly thrill fanatics with their extended improvisations, but the indistinct performances of the latter will prove largely useless to the casual fan. And with live albums in general going the way of the vinyl record these days, this particular fossil will only satisfy musical anthropologists. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia By the late '70s, Kansas had not only established themselves as one of America's most adventurous progressive rock bands; they even had a number of Top 20 hits to their credit. And as ...
Texas Flood/In The Beginning
Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood/In The Beginning CDs  (2008)

Private Eyes
CD $12.39  Audio Samples
Sony Legacy's X2 series is one of the more curious reissue programs in the label's history. Here is a prime example: Stevie Ray Vaughan's breakthrough debut for the label, Texas Flood from 1983, is slapped in a slipcase with 1992's In the Beginning. The strange thing is that the latter album, while indeed recorded earlier, was released posthumously. It would have made far more sense to pop the debut in a sleeve with its successor -- also a hit -- Couldn't Stand the Weather from 1984. These two discs make perfect bookends and offer an exacting portrait of Vaughan's music at the time. These first two albums popped out almost immediately after he bailed from David Bowie's touring band after appearing on the Let's Dance album. This version does contain the bonus tracks. In the Beginning is a hodgepodge assemblage of cuts from a still ...
