| | LaBelle Nightbirds CD LaBelle Discography of CDs
(2 Customer Reviews)
After two commercially unsuccessful albums for Warner Brothers, LaBelle moved to Epic in 1974 to record the brash, deeply funky NIGHTBIRDS. Helmed by famed New Orleans producer, arranger, and hit-maker Allen Toussaint, NIGHTBIRDS mixes sassy New Orleans R&B with hard-driving funk and LaBelle's soulful, often eclectic, take on girl-group dynamics. On the strength of Toussaint's horn-driven arrangements and the album's runaway smash single, "Lady Marmalade" (with its immediately memorable French refrain), NIGHTBIRDS shot up the charts.
The remainder of the album measures up to the standard set by its single, especially on the sly groover "Don't Bring Me Down" and the thumping "Are You Lonely?" Patti LaBelle's agile soprano alternately soars and seeks out gritty corners, while Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash providing airtight, in-your-face harmonies. The glam-inflected "Space Children" and "Nightbird," a theatrical ballad, may date the album a bit, but that is part of the fun of this classic, good-time funk-fest.Rolling Stone (10/31/02, p.136) - Ranked # 14 in Rolling Stone's "Women in Rock: The 50 Essential Albums" - "...A kaleidoscopic masterpiece of feminist striving..." Rolling Stone (4/13/00, p.132) - 4.5 stars out of 5 - "...an almost mechanical underpinning of robot funk and juke-joint piano janglings....showcasing Patti at her sassiest and most elastic..." Nightbirds album
$11.69 All tracks have been digitally remastered using HDCD technology.
Ferry's first solo effort since the second breakup of Roxy Music is arguably his best, in part because it continues in the direction the band had been going. It's like AVALON, only more so.
Here, Ferry's lounge lizard affectations are writ large; the lyrical pose is all bruised romantic fatalism (say hello, "Slave to Love"), and the music fits it like a glove. The album's soundscapes are lush and echo-laden, and nearly every track has a discreet disco pulse; "Valentine," the one exception, is mid-tempo ...
| | Laura Branigan Self Control CD (1984)
Nightbirds CD music
$5.95 Laura Branigan's third album capitalized on the Euro-dance-pop and affecting ballads that made her an international star while allowing her to grow as a vocalist. Her collections, always uneven in terms of material, benefit mostly from her stellar voice, and this is no exception."The Lucky One" and "Heart" start slow and build to a crescendo, perfectly showcasing her range without being obvious. The title track, about finding sex in the seamy side of town, sparked a bit of a controversy, but ended up being her second biggest hit. The song itself works, but Branigan was never a sex bomb, so the fact that she pulls it off is indicative of her power as a performer. "Ti Amo" is the album's theatrical ballad, which works ...

1976's A NEW WORLD RECORD is both a classic of commercial '70s pop and an archetypal ELO album. From the outer-space synths and rich orchestrations that open the album to Jeff Lynne's meticulous production and Beatlesque melodies, A NEW WORLD RECORD is magnificent ear candy. Both ambitious enough to appeal to "serious" rock fans and ultra-catchy enough to sound terrific on Top 40 radio (the plaintively gorgeous, McCartney-like "Telephone Line" and the anthemic "Livin' Thing" were well-deserved smashes), ELO was one of the few '70s bands whose appeal covered both the FM and AM spectrums. The album even resurrects "Do Ya," a classic single by Lynne's former band, the Move, in a splashy new version.
The next ELO album, 1977's elaborate double-album OUT OF THIS WORLD, was probably the band's commercial high point, but A NEW WORLD RECORD is the group's ...
| | Rick Springfield Living In Oz CD (1983)
Nightbirds album
$5.95 Though this was Rick Springfield's ninth album, it seemed like the third to most pop music fans, as it came on the heels of his breakthrough, Working Class Dog, and its successful follow-up, Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet. And though this contained as many hits as the aforementioned collections, it isn't remembered as quite the same in terms of accomplishment; this may be because it is so personal that it's just not as accessible. Living in Oz is Springfield's response to the dance-pop wave that was just starting to build and would be prominent until grunge announced its presence, ...
| | Carly Simon Boys In The Trees CD (1978)
Nightbirds CD music
$5.99 Building on the strengths of its predecessor ANOTHER PASSENGER, BOYS IN THE TREES continues Carly Simon's artistic progress in the face of declining success on the pop singles charts. Unlike ANOTHER PASSENGER, Simon scored a hit off of BOYS IN THE TREES (the slinky "You Belong To Me"), but the whole is constructed in such a way that even that song gains strength in the context of the rest of the album.
Arif Mardin's production gives the album a high gloss sheen without making it sound like a disco bandwagon-jumper, even on the dancefloor-ready "Tranquillo (Melt My Heart)." The album is not without missteps--exhibit A is the bizarre fake-reggae "De Bat (Fly in Me ...
