Frankie Laine made a commercial comeback with the gold-selling "Moonlight Gambler" during the winter of 1956-1957, his first Top Ten hit since 1953. With the further impetus being the success of the then-recent Johnny Mathis compilation, Johnny's Greatest Hits (the first-ever "greatest-hits" album), Columbia Records assembled Frankie Laine's Greatest Hits, a 12-track album leading off with "Moonlight Gambler" and also featuring Laine's biggest hits of the early '50s on Columbia, "Jezebel," "Rose, Rose, I Love You," "Jealousy (Jalousie)," "High Noon (Do Not Forsake Me)," and "I Believe." The label eschewed Laine's duet hits with Jo Stafford, Doris Day, and Jim Boyd, and also ignored some Top Ten hits in favor of re-recordings of two of the singer's biggest hits during his Mercury Records period, "That's My Desire" and "That Lucky Old Sun," in addition to a couple of lesser hits and a couple of non-hits. The resulting collection is not as good as it could have been, and though the album has remained in the Columbia Records catalog for over 40 years, it is long since due for an overhaul in the CD era. ~ William Ruhlmann Greatest Hits Review

Greatest Hits album
$63.49 Originally released on Verve Records in 1961, ELLA IN HOLLYWOOD is a straightforward collection of 12 familiar standards mostly given very simple, pop-oriented arrangements. Songs tend to run well under four minutes (a gently swinging "Just In Time" clocks in just under two), with only a minimum of room for Fitzgerald to break into her legendary scatting. The main exception is the centerpiece track, a nine-minute take on the Duke Ellington standard "Take the A Train," that gives Fitzgerald ample ...
| | Robert Plant Raising Sand CD (2007)
Greatest Hits CD music
$14.69 Those who find the pairing of '70s rock god Robert Plant with contemporary bluegrass queen Alison Krauss unlikely have probably not been paying attention to Plant's latter-day work, which is full of intimate, acoustic-flavored balladry. While the organic-sounding, low-key Plant/Krauss collaboration, RAISING SAND, is a far cry from Led Zeppelin's stadium rock, it offers up some hauntingly moody textures that should appeal to "Battle of Evermore" admirers.
Consisting mostly of sagely chosen cover tunes, the album finds Plant and Krauss bringing their warm-but-eerie harmonies to everything from Townes Van Zandt's nihilistic folk poetry ("Nothin'") ...
| | Neil Diamond Tap Root Manuscript CD (1970)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$6.49 Half a straight-ahead pop album and half an exotic song cycle centered on a musical portrait of Africa, TAP ROOT MANUSCRIPT provides prime examples both of Neil Diamond's superlative way with a pop song in the classic "Cracklin' Rosie," and of his ambitious ...
| | Ella Fitzgerald Ella In Rome: The Birthday Concert CD (1958)
Greatest Hits songs
$13.29 Recorded on April 25, 1958, Ella Fitzgerald's 40th birthday, ELLA IN ROME finds one of the best jazz singers in history at the peak of her powers and not yet even halfway through her long and illustrious career. Norman Granz, head of Verve and Fitzgerald's producer, gives a flowery introduction that Fitzgerald goes on to justify. The opening "St Louis Blues," with an extended, intricate scat solo, is simply transcendent, and the ballads, like a slinky version of Duke Ellington's "Just Squeeze Me (But Please Don't Tease Me)," are stunning. The hour-long program also features a small-combo set with the always-amazing Oscar ...
| | Madeleine Peyroux Careless Love CD (2004)
Greatest Hits album
$14.49 Madeleine Peyroux's unique blend of jazz and pop was first unveiled on 1996's DREAMLAND, where she sounded like a postmodern heir to the smoky-voiced tradition that ran down from Billie Holiday through the likes of Karen Dalton and Judy Roderick. Though Peyroux made a splash with her debut, she quickly dropped out of the music scene, not to appear again until eight years later with the long-overdue follow-up, CARELESS LOVE.
Here, Peyroux tackles material from a variety of sources; some songs were written expressly for her by such contemporary songsmiths as Jesse Harris (who penned Norah Jones's breakthrough hit, "Don't Know Why"). Perhaps most striking, though, are her interpretations of older compositions. Peyroux redefines the darkly yearning Leonard Cohen tune "Dance Me to the End of Love" as a sultry invitation rather than a heart-on-the-sleeve plea. Her lighter-than-air stroll through the clouds of Bob Dylan's "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go" has a graceful ease that puts the song's many previous cover versions to shame. Throughout CARELESS LOVE, Peyroux--with highly sympathetic production from Joni Mitchell right-hand-man Larry Klein--proves fully up to the task of redefining the role of torch singer for the careworn 21st century.

| | Nylons CD (1982)
Greatest Hits album
$6.89 The Nylons' performing career began in 1980 at a time when a cappella outfits were not in vogue. The fact that the Nylons were unlike any a cappella act on the scene made them stand out, and earned them accolades and a devoted audience almost immediately. The band has existed in one form or another for 25 years, but it is the original quartet of Claude Morrison, Arnold Robinson, Paul Cooper, and Mark Connors that created their most beloved recordings. This, their 1982 self-titled debut album, sounded great upon release, but their following four albums have overshadowed its innocent charm. Each of the vocalists had a distinctive voice that blended together perfectly, although Connors' voice was the most awe-inspiring; his soaring, beautiful vocals could make a brick cry, and he probably broke both men's and women's hearts during his tenure with the Nylons. His emotional lead on "Up on the Roof" made the song his own, and his heartfelt lead on the self-penned (with Cooper) "A Million Ways" is still stunning. Connors wasn't the only Nylons lead vocalist; all shared the spotlight throughout their career. Morrison's touching lead on "Rock and Roll Lullaby" equaled Connors' best moments. Robinson and Cooper are less impressive on this release, although they would reach great heights over the next ten years or so (Cooper's "Some People" is pretty fab, though). Some of the less distinctive tracks here sound as if they were recorded ...
| | Barbra Streisand People CD (1964)
Greatest Hits CD music
$6.89 When 22 year-old Barbra Streisand released PEOPLE in September 1964, she was at the beginning of what would be a long and fruitful career. The album is vintage Streisand. With the title track (originally from "Funny Girl") eventually becoming a classic song and signature Streisand number, the album is indicative of a young talent finding and defining herself. The standards and showtunes are given that Streisand touch, with her humorous shtick showing on "When In Rome (Do ...
| | Andy Williams Moon River & Other Great Movie Themes CD (1962)
Greatest Hits music CDs
$5.95 Tinseltown has been responsible for a great deal of the music of our lives; we often have movie melodies stuck in our heads long after the storylines and dialogue have been relegated to the mists of oblivion. The mellifluous Andy Williams renders soundtrack melodies with the utmost fidelity, shading the songs with an emotional range from heroically proud to meek and sorrowful. Vocally, Williams has the range to belt at full volume and swoon with under-the-breath sighs.
Still, ...
| | Celi Bee Alternating Currents CD (1993)
Greatest Hits songs
$11.39 Sweetly soaring disco from the legendary Celi Bee -- easily one of our favorite disco divas of the late 70s! This album's got a slightly lighter feel than some of Celi's other work -- a bit less drama at times, but still plenty of full-on clubby rhythms -- thanks to arrangements from Hector Garrido, and some relatively full orchestrations overall. There's a definite New ...
