After more than a decade with Virgin Records, superstar Janet Jackson moved to the Island label for 2008's DISCIPLINE, an album squarely aimed at restoring the singer's former R&B/pop glory. While the record's title clearly echoes 1986's CONTROL, its sound is wholly 21st century, with Jackson and Def Jam's Antonio "L.A." Reid overseeing of-the-moment producers such as Rodney Jerkins and Ne-Yo, along with Janet's beau, Jermaine Dupri.
The most striking element of DISCIPLINE is its electro sheen, which prominently appears on the album's lead single "Rock With U." Not to be confused with her brother Michael's like-minded hit from 1979's OFF THE WALL, the song is a dreamy dance-floor-oriented number that makes plenty of room for Janet's breathy coo. Other standout tracks include the sassy, Vocoder-tinged "Feedback" and the synth-heavy "Luv," both of which are also custom-made for the club. Easily one of Jackson's most immediately engaging outings, DISCIPLINE is sure to delight longtime fans, and may win over listeners who haven't followed her career since her late-`80s/early-`90s heyday.

$13.15 Historically, it's a tricky endeavor for the singer from an enormously successful band to embark on a solo career. Gwen Stefani, the glamorous vocalist for No Doubt, sidesteps the issue on her first solo album, LOVE, ANGEL, MUSIC, BABY, by largely eschewing the No Doubt sound. In its place, there's a strong emphasis on the R&B and hip-hop flavors that were hinted at in preceding No Doubt records. Towards that end, Stefani gamely enlists the assistance of Dr. Dre, the Neptunes, Andre 3000 of Outkast, and others, on an album that references everything from Japanese pop culture ("Harajuku Girls") to FIDDLER ON THE ROOF ("Rich Girl," featuring rapper Eve). Sensual R&B rhythms, frenetic hip-hop beats, and yes, the occasional pop/rock echo of No Doubt, ...

Discipline music CDs
$25.25 The finest example of perfect disco pop, and a record that should be prescribed to musical snobs and manic depressives. The album is a true ambassador of what pop music can be. Jackson whoops and dances through a suite of unforgettable melodies that should be danced to with a smile on your face. Each track offers at least one musical hook, whether it is the beauty of 'Human Nature' (who can resist the 'dada dada da da da') or the 'whoo whoo' of 'Billie Jean'. It's all too good.
The 25th Anniversary Edition of Thriller DVD/CD set celebrates this ground-breaking album with 8 bonus tracks, 5 of which are previously unreleased. The new tracks include exclusive remixes from Kanye West, Akon, and will.i.am along with a previously unreleased track from the Thriller sessions, newly mixed and mastered by ...

$13.55 David Ayer, who wrote TRAINING DAY, gives us another unflinching look at disillusionment and questionable decision-making within the ranks of the LAPD. Ayer's second directorial effort tells the story of burnt-out Tom Ludlow (Keanu Reeves), a functioning alcoholic and undisciplined detective with the Special Vice Unit. While so much of this characterization appears resonatingly familiar at first, we soon learn that the character here has been tweaked. While this loose cannon in no way does things by the book, he is also far from playing by his own rules. Ludlow is relied upon by the other detectives in the unit, and by their almost maniacally ambitious Captain Wander (Forest Whitaker), to go outside the law whenever needed. The infractions he is pressured to commit are quickly and ...

Discipline album
$9.79 Ann Arbor, MI, prides itself in academia, business, art, and especially a rich musical heritage that spills over into Metropolitan Detroit, particularly where piano players are concerned, mainly in the jazz arena. Mark Braun (aka Mr. B) has assembled dozens of showcase concerts with local, regional, national, and internationally known players over two decades. This CD features solo piano tracks from nine different performers, eight of the selections recorded at the Kerrytown Concert House. While the range of styles lies in jazz and blues, some variations and extensions are also heard. The oldest of the bunch, William Bolcom, known for his award-winning operatic, 20th century, cabaret, and vintage or classical music, serves up the appropriately titled original "Graceful Ghost" in a delicate semi-rag style. A magnum opus medley of four Duke Ellington numbers over a whopping 11 and a half minutes from the extraordinary pianist Tad Weed is rendered thoughtfully and with full extension in tempo and rhythm changes. His version of "Take the 'A' Train" is active and most often brilliant. Mr. B always has had a handle on two-fisted ultra-melodic boogie-woogie; his tune "My Sunday Best" cements his reputation with modern jazz flourishes blended in. A stride-flavored blues from Jelly Roll Morton devotee James Dapogny is another original on the program, ...

Discipline album
$13.15 Born in Santa Clara, California, the son of an accomplished violinist and the grandson of a LA stage musician, Dave began his music training at the age of 9. He learned to play the violin and soon he was performing in the school orchestra. He had just turned 14 when 'The British Invasion" in music began. Television & radio airwaves were flooded with a new sound. Mop-head, long-haired guys in suits with electric guitars sang songs with simple, but thought provoking lyrics that called out to new generation of young seekers. Dave Pfau was one of them. He traded his Mom's violin for an electric guitar. About the time that 'The Beatles' had released 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band,' Dave began a search for a deeper, and more meaningful life. Caught-up in the 60's culture, he commented, 'I began listening to music under the influence of mind altering drugs.' Even though this took music to a deeper and expanded experience, he soon realized that this was not the path he wanted to continue on. 'I knew I was going on a downhill path with a real dead end. I was searching for something more meaningful in life. I just did not know what it was. ' In 1968, with the war in Vietnam raging, he decided to join the U.S. Coast Guard. After returning from a specialty school in New York, he met up with his long time friend & classical pianist, Ken Teel. He commented, 'I could see that Ken was different from the last time that I had seen him. Something had really happened to him and I wanted to know what it was. ' What Ken shared with him would dramatically change his music and his life. In the Summer of 1969, Dave Pfau became a Christian. 'I accepted Jesus Christ as my personal Lord & Savior." This relationship took Dave and music in general, to an intense Spiritual level, and his music & songwriting to higher call. In 1972, after being discharged from the service, he joined 'The Revisions,' a Southern Gospel Group that ministered in churches, in concert, and to those in jail & juvenile hall. He said of those times, 'I saw first hand how music could open up hearts and touch people with the Good News of God's Love. ' After 3 years of working during the week and traveling & ministering on the weekends, Dave felt it was time to take a break and reflect on a calling he was feeling deep within his own heart. It was in that transition time that Dave began writing songs and music based on his own life experiences, his conversion and continuing relationship with God. 1980 saw the release of Dave's first album, 'Loving Reflection. ' A move to Mendocino County, California, brought the opportunity to join ...
