Having traded in lead singer Bobby Kimball for Fergie Frederiksen, a smooth tenor wailer in the tradition of Journey's Steve Perry, Toto proceeded to follow its power ballad smash Toto IV with a Journey clone album, minus the aching ballads that had made Journey such a success. A workout for drummer Jeff Porcaro, keyboardist David Paich, and guitarist Steve Lukather, Isolation was anything but the kind of record those millions who had loved "Rosanna" were waiting for. It seemed intended to restore the bandmembers' heady studio reputations as hard rock technicians, which it did by dispensing with the elements that finally had made the band a big success in 1982. ~ William Ruhlmann
While Isolation didn't have as many memorable songs as the blockbuster Toto IV, it was an effective continuation of the band's trademark sound, especially the hit "Stranger in Town." ~ David Jehnzen Isolation Music | List Price | $6.99 (You save $1.04) | | Category | Rock/Pop Albums, Rock CDs | | Label | Columbia | | Orig Year | 1984 | | All Time Sales Rank | 50336 | | CD Universe Part number | 7611453 | | Catalog number | 724586 | | Discs | 1 | | Release Date | Mar 01, 2008 | | Studio/Live | Studio | | Mono/Stereo | Stereo |

Dial In On This TOTO!! It is truly a shame that this release never got the airplay it deserves. This is one of the BEST releases that they have ever released. For me, the songs on this CD never have grown old or boring!! From "Carmen" all the way through to "Holyanna", every song can't help but get your body a-movin'! I was fortunate enough to see them do this album live on tour!! It was an absolutely rockin' concert; the new lead singer was doing cartwheels and somersaults on stage WHILE HE WAS STILL SINGING!!!!! This is a must-have for any TOTO fan. Submitted by michel.pare (Grants Pass, OR USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No
Tremendous Album I'm a big fan of Toto & own all of their albums but if I was stranded on a desert island & could choose just one to keep, this would be the one. Isolation, which is Toto's 5th album, was much harder rocking than it's Grammy winning predecessor - Toto 4. It also didn't win any Grammy's or sell near as many copies as Toto 4 but that wasn't becuz it was inferior album. It was becuz the record company didn't promote it properly & for whatever reason, didn't release hardly any of it's great songs as singles. Where Toto 4 had mostly melodic mid-tempo pop/rock grooves & slow ballads, Isolation had mostly faster tempo songs & was much harder rocking. It was also the first album without longtime singer - Bobby Kimball. The new singer - Fergie Frederickson sounded much different than Bobby but had a powerful voice that meshed really well with the bands new sound. David Paich & Steve Lukather do lead vocals on the slower tunes as well. As far as the album goes, it has the same great production & musicianship as Toto 4 & their later albums & there's not one weak song on the entire album. Many of these songs, if given the chance, probably would've been hit singles. My favorite tracks are "Carmen", "Lion", "Endless", "Mr. Friendly" & "Holyanna". If you're a Toto fan & don't own this album yet, you're really missing out on some true rock gems. Submitted by goodguy126 (Holland, MI, USA) Was This Review Helpful? Yes No

Isolation album
$22.65 PLAYS LIVE (HIGHLIGHTS) are highlights from 4 different North American concerts between December 1982 and Spring 1983.
This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
PLAYS LIVE is the sound of a man finally freeing himself definitively from the shackles that had bound him for years. Admittedly those shackles, being front man for Genesis, one of the most fascinating and consistently creative prog-rock bands of the early '70s, were hardly severe. But they were a constraint nonetheless. (How often could Peter take some fan screaming "Suppers Ready" when trying to debut new material?) Finally, with a substantial body of solo material (four albums, three of them titled PETER GABRIEL), Gabriel was ready to put the ghost of Genesis to rest.
And while he did drive a stake through his art-rock past, Gabriel's incendiary stage presence could not be distinguished. Luckily the live set captured here, which draws heavily from the SECURITY album, is consistently first rate and involving. Not content just to breath fresh life into road-weary veterans like "D.I.Y" or "Solsbury Hill," Gabriel reaches for new emotional heights on stellar versions of "San Jacinto," "Biko" and "And Through The Wire." As a bonus for completists PLAYS LIVE also contains the ultra-rare "I Go Swimming." Overall an excellent portrait of Gabriel's live show.

| Toto Turn Back CD (1981)
Isolation CD music
$5.95 Toto's third album, Turn Back, was a bit of a disappointment. The group's ability to turn out highly competent studio rock was not translating into an individual sound, and since Turn Back had few memorable songs on it, one was left with little but those famous chops that Toto possessed in abundance. ~ William Ruhlmann

Isolation music CDs
$5.95 Music snobs love to deride Toto as exemplars of MOR, radio-ready commercial product, a criticism not entirely off the mark for a supergroup formed by high-profile studio musicians intent on mixing pop styles into a glossy, accessible package. But Toto weren't all chops and no substance, especially when it came to writing memorable pop songs, as one listen to their hugely successful 1978 self-titled debut will attest.
Whether squeezing nursery rhymes into smooth grooves ("Georgy Porgy"), mixing funky verses with anthemic choruses ("I'll Supply the Love"), or honing their focus ...
| | Toto Seventh One CD (1988)
Isolation songs
$5.95 Toto attempted to satisfy commercial considerations by loading up the first half of their seventh album with the kind of power ballads that had given the band recognition before, especially songs named after women whose names end in "A" like "Pamela" and "Anna." But these thinly veiled rewrites of "Rosanna" earned only modest radio play, and the rest of the album, which rocked harder as it went on, while it may have been truer to the band's musical aspirations, continued to sound too anonymous to earn any response beyond the band's fan base, especially its international one (which it seemed to be acknowledging by printing some of the sleeve notes in Japanese). ~ William Ruhlmann

Isolation album
$5.95 This is a Super Audio CD playable only on Super Audio CD players.
If Toto's musical advantage was that, since its members continued to play on many of the successful records made in L.A., its own music was popular almost by definition, its disadvantage was that it made little attempt to seek an individual musical signature -- a particular style, say, or a distinctive singer (Bobby Kimball was not it) who could make its records immediately identifiable. "Hold the Line" had been a big hit, but who did it? Boston? Foreigner? As a result, Toto was less well positioned than most to come off a big debut album with the follow-up, and Hydra was unusually dependent on its leadoff single, "99." Maybe it was a tribute to the female lead on the old Get Smart TV show, but many listeners didn't get a ...
