The first Mahavishnu Orchestra's original very slim catalog was padded out somewhat by this live album (recorded in New York's Central Park) on which the five jazz/rock virtuosos can be heard stretching out at greater length than in the studio. There are only three selections on the disc, all of which were to have been on the group's then-unissued third album -- two of them, guitarist John McLaughlin's "Trilogy: Sunlit Path/La Merede la Mer" and keyboardist Jan Hammer's "Sister Andrea," are proportioned roughly as they were in their studio renditions, while the third, McLaughlin's "Dream," is stretched to nearly double its 11-minute studio length. Each develops organically through a number of sections, and there are fewer lockstep unison passages than on the earlier recordings. McLaughlin is as flashy and noisy as ever on double-necked electric guitar, and Hammer and violinist Jerry Goodman are a match for him in the speed department, with drummer Billy Cobham displaying a compelling, raw power and dexterity to his work as well, especially on the CD edition, which also gives bassist Rich Laird a showcase for his slightly subtler work. Yet for all of the superb playing, one really doesn't hear much music on this album; electricity and competitive empathy are clearly not enough, particularly on the 21-minute "Dream," which left a lot of fans feeling let down at the end of its side-two-filling run on the LP. In the decades since this album was released, the studio versions of these three pieces, along with other tracks being worked up for their third album, have appeared as The Lost Trident Sessions -- dating from May and June of 1973 -- thus giving fans a means of comparing this repertory to what the band had worked out (or not worked out) in the studio; and Between Nothingness and Eternity has come up a bit in estimation as a result, benefiting as it does from the spontaneity and energy of a live performance, though even that can only carry this work so far -- beyond the personality conflicts that broke up the band, they seem to have been approaching, though not quite reaching, a musical dead end as well. ~ Richard S. Ginell & Bruce Eder
Guitarist John McLaughlin and his band of jazz-rock merry men were at the peak of their form when this essential live document was recorded in 1973. For the fans of this new fusion music, BETWEEN NOTHINGNESS & ETERNITY was the apotheosis of the genre that few would transcend.
McLaughlin and his band wrench fire and brimstone from their instruments, bring sonic manna reigning down from the heavens, and set the atmosphere aflame. McLaughlin's incendiary soloing on the magnificent opening salvo, "Trilogy," is further complimented by Billy Cobham's thunderous drum fills, Jan Hammer's speedy Moog runs, and Jerry Goodman's starbursting violin, which send palpable surges of heat across the stereo fabric. The sheer bravado of each member's performance is electrifying to hear. If you're not already familiar with the Mahavishnu Orchestra or fusion in general, BETWEEN NOTHINGNESS & ETERNITY is required listening.

4 stars Original MO's Only Official Live CD
I was lucky enough to've seen the orig MO twice years before, and they sounded nothing like this. For decades the material here was the only way to hear what was supposed to've been the MO's third album in '74-5. But clashes within the Orchestra broke up the band shortly after this live recording. "Lost Trident Sessions" in '99 finally released the studio versions. BNAE operates on two levels. You had the BEST jazz-rock fusion band in the world playing some very complex and challenging compositions. Behind the scenes, the MO was splitting into two conflicting factions, based on internal disagreements over songwriting, credits, album song selection, and other base business concerns. The result is you can actually hear the tension being played out at breathtaking, breakneck speed. E.g.: McLaughlin and Hammer both virtually trampling over the ends of each other's solo lines - everyone seemingly trying to outplay, outamplify, and generally outblast everyone else. The sound is okay, if LOUD. Central Park seems like the last place anyone sane would've chosen acoustically for a live recording. It's kind of sad that this was the original MO's swan song - five guys playing AT, rather than truly WITH each other. But until or unless producer Bob Belden or whomever succeeds, this remains the only official live sonic document of the original MO. What a shame some people apparently still can't bury their childish performer's egos, even 30+ years later, if only for the sake of we who are still appreciative fans ...(P.S.: There was no guitar OR synth used in writing this review.)

Il Compagno Don Camillo
Alessandro Cicognini Il Compagno Don Camillo CD  (2008) (Import)

Between Nothingness & Eternity
CD $27.59
Digitmovies proudly presents for the first time on CD the complete OST by Alessandro Cicognini for the movie "Il compagno Don Camillo" (aka "Don Camillo en Russie" - "Don Camillo in Moscow") directed in 1965 by Luigi Comencini, fifth and last movie of the lucky movies series well known all around the world, starring the french actor Fernandel as Don Camillo, a priest and the italian player Gino Cervi as Peppone, a communist major. Both those characters created by the highly imaginative pen of Giovanni Guareschi. Although we still ventured in the movie territory of Don Camillo releasing the Carlo Rustichelli OST for "Don Camillo e i giovani d'oggi", a kind of re-make starring Gastone Moschin (Don Camillo) and Lionel Stander (Peppone) directed by Mario Camerini in 1972, after Fernandel's death (Digitmovies CDDM 077), this CD represents for Digitmovies a very important pass, considering that of the original five movies, all scored by Alessandro Cicognini, the first two directed by Julien Duvivier, the two following ones by Carmine Gallone) in those days no one note was ever issued on complete records, 78 rpm, 45 rpm and compilations, so a real "black hole" in the world discography. Until now it seems that no master tapes from the first four movies survived (but the searches continue, helped by the faith, hope and good will.),but for this long time awaited CD project is one more time possible thanks to the big help of the friends at C.A.M. whose archives the mono master tapes of the original recording session were kept stored until today.
