Principally recorded at Webster Hall, New York, New York between June 19, 1961 & March 15, 1962. Includes liner notes by Doug Ramsey and George Avakian.
Recording sessions that pair jazz musicians with string orchestras can be dicey affairs, artistically speaking. More often than not, they represent an attempt to dilute the edginess of jazz and make it palatable for listeners with softer ears. DESMOND BLUE, however, succeeds marvelously. Given alto saxophonist Paul Desmond's natural penchant for cool, silky tones and highly nuanced phrasing, the addition of lush strings (arranged here by Bob Prince) is perfectly complementary, and the results are rich, complex, and alluring, never syrupy or sentimental.
The presence of guitar legend Jim Hall adds another dimension to the proceedings. Hall plays with great intuitive restraint and balance, yet is progressive in terms of his harmonic and rhythmic approach. The set focuses mostly on standards, including "I've Got You Under My Skin," "Body and Soul," and "My Funny Valentine," but it is the mood--sophisticated and soothing--that dominates throughout. This is introspective music that will undoubtedly appeal to Desmond fans, and should win over jazz purists and lovers of contemporary orchestral music alike.
All tracks have been digitally remastered.

Desmond Blue album
$12.05 When one applies for a job, sometimes the response is that you're overqualified. The same may be the case for Peisha McPhee. Her classically trained, strong, clear voice of operatic proportions doesn't always fit well with the songs on the play list, songs that require somewhat more vocal dynamics than McPhee gives. Trying hard as she can to restrain her powerful voice, she comes on too strong for such pop material as "Ill Wind" and "Little Girl Blue," which require greater subtlety than McPhee provides. ...

Desmond Blue songs
$15.19 Aeoliah (pronounced: Ay-oh-lee-ya) was born and raised in Germany until he was ten when he immigrated to the US with his parents. He completed his university training at the University of New Mexico in 1975, graduating cum laude with a degree in fine arts. His works of art have been exhibited in well known world museums such as the Art Institute of Chicago and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. During his early teens, he took formal music lessons on the violin and played in his local high school orchestra. However, his true love was always the piano. In 1979, while he was in process of completing a painting entitled Music of the Spheres, he began to hear tonal harmonies that corresponded to the healing tones and translucent colors in the painting. He then got the idea that light and sound are somehow linked as universal forms of healing energy, and this in turn, became his inspiration and vision to create his first album, Inner Sanctum in 1980.What started out as impressionistic, improvisational textures of electronic and acoustic instruments blending together in rich harmonic overtones of transparent, ethereal sound, later evolved into more structured ...

$36.79 | | Jonny Hirsch Live From The Batcave CD (2009)
Desmond Blue album
$16.45 Jonny Hirsch has established himself as one of New York City's most exciting solo artists. While other singers and saxophone players lead their bands exclusively on vocals or saxophone, Jonny is a multi-dimensional frontman - he leads the show with both his voice and saxophone. The 28 year old singer/saxophone player is often compared to the likes of Lenny Kravitz, Karl Denson, and Steely Dan. While fusing together elements of rock, funk, jazz, and skat singing with a powerful voice and a dynamic saxophone, Jonny’s music has taken on a genre all of its own. His unique style attracts a variety of New York City concertgoers and musicians. Over the past few years, some of New York City’s best studio and touring musicians (including Oz Noy, Andy Galore, and Ruben Rodriguez) have been part of Jonny’s band. “It’s an all-star band with Jonny leading the charge,” says lead guitar player Rich Simpson. “The songwriting is catchy and fun, but it also allows for a lot of interpretation and improvisation. I think Jonny’s crowd is growing because they love the songs, the tightness of the band, and the energy we bring to the stage each show.”During the past year and a half, Jonny recorded the 11-track album Live from The Batcave, working with a range of different producers that included Rusty Cloud ...
