Billy Joel's performance of "The River Of Dreams" was nominated for a 1994 Grammy Award as "Best Pop Vocal Performance, Male."
RIVER OF DREAMS finds Billy Joel once again in the familiar territory that he staked out early on in his long and very successful career: well crafted songs, strong vocals sung with conviction, and thoughtful production, built solidly from the ground up. Joel has always been a stylistic chameleon. He can conjure up '50s doowop or a beautiful Beatlesque melody and then suddenly turn on a dime and come at you with a hard-edged, urgently rocking tale about life, love lost and lessons to be learned.
On "River of Dreams" Billy rocks hard, but with a maturity and insight befitting the grey that flecks his beard. Of course just when you think you know where Billy Joel is going he will always surprise you. "Good Night My Angel' is a beautiful lullaby with a strong classical undercurrent that would make Brahms smile. Other key tracks are "All About Soul," the title cut and the reflective ode "2000 Years".

River Of Dreams
$6.89 This edition of STORM FRONT is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "We Didn't Start The Fire," "The Downeaster Alexa" and "I Go To Extremes."
Also available in a 3-pack with THE BRIDGE and THE NYLON CURTAIN.
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
STORM FRONT is easily the best of Billy Joel's later albums. Upon reaching the early stages of middle age, Joel became more than just a pop song writer. By focusing his entire life's experiences into his compositions, Joel could write with much greater depth and impact than a decade previous. Of course, this is most evident in the hit "We Didn't Start The Fire," a sort of musical history lesson that encompasses all the major events from the fifties up until this afternoon. But there is much more experience in this record that Joel approaches from several points of view.
The unique "The Downeaster 'Alexa'" is a poignant tale of the plight of Joel's Long Island home fishing industry. His well publicized tour of the U.S.S.R. produced the magnificent "Leningrad," a touching comparison between himself and a Russian citizen. The piano man hasn't become too reflective to ...
| | Billy Joel Cold Spring Harbor CD (1971) Remastered; Enhanced CD
River Of Dreams
$6.89 This edition of COLD SPRING HARBOR is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as a video clip for the song "Everybody Loves You Now."
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Billy Joel's melodic gifts were very much in evidence on his first album, more so because the rest of his talents still had some catching up to do. COLD SPRING HARBOR contains the lovely devotional ballad "She's Got a Way," which became a hit when a live version was released more than a decade later (on SONGS IN THE ATTIC). It also features a couple of frenetically catchy melodies in "Everybody Loves You Now" and "Falling of the Rain" (whose arpeggiated piano playing would become a Joel trademark).
The words often seem like afterthoughts--something to sing the melodies with--but there sure are a lot of them. "Everybody Loves You Now," about the isolation of fame (did he know something even then?), has more verses than you'd think anyone could fit into two and a half minutes. The original album was mistakenly ...

$6.89 Also available in a 3-pack with STORM FRONT and THE NYLON CURTAIN.
This edition of THE BRIDGE is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "A Matter Of Trust" and "Baby Grand."
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
Billy Joel is a man of varied career stages--the piano man, the angry young man, the finger-poppin' Tin Pan Alley songwriter, the serious composer. But one thing has remained true throughout his nearly-thirty year career: he can always pen a perfect pop song. And with THE BRIDGE acting as a "bridge" between Joel's Tin Pan Alley style and his more contemporary sound, one of this 1986 album's main charms is the pop craft that brought us such gems as "A Matter Of Trust," "This Is The Time," "Modern Woman" and "Baby Grand," a delectable duet with Ray Charles. Unmistakably mature and containing some of his best songs to date, THE BRIDGE brings together a batch of songs that truly mark Joel's growth as a songwriter and forges ...
| | Billy Joel Nylon Curtain CD (1982) Remastered; Enhanced CD
River Of Dreams
$6.89 This edition of THE NYLON CURTAIN is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as video clips for the songs "Pressure," "Goodnight Saigon" and "She's Right On Time."
Digitally remastered by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
What may be Billy Joel's most satisfying album is also probably his weirdest. THE NYLON CURTAIN is loaded with Beatlesque vocal effects, claustrophobic arrangements and socially conscious songs about unemployment (the hit "Allentown"), Vietnam ("Goodnight Saigon," which opens with the sound of helicopter rotors) and sexual politics ("Laura"). This isn't the kind of album Joel's fans had come to expect, nor is it much like what Joel went on to do later. Think of THE NYLON CURTAIN as a one-off concept album that works because the one thing Joel retained here was his deft pop touch, and to hear him apply it to a relatively "difficult" album is well worth the work. Parental advisory: Joel uses a seven-letter ...
| | Billy Joel Streetlife Serenade CD (1974) Remastered; Enhanced CD
River Of Dreams
$6.89 The remastered edition of STREETLIFE SERENADE is an Enhanced CD containing both a full audio program as well as a video clip for the song "Souvenir."
Digitally remastered using 24-bit technology by Ted Jensen (Sterling Sound, New York, New York).
STREETLIFE SERENADE may have been a disappointment to Joel's record company, featuring but one single, "The Entertainer," that barely scraped the Top 40, but it's loaded with songs that came to be signature pieces for the piano man. For years, Joel began his concerts with a piped-in version of the instrumental "The Mexican Connection" and closed them by playing the bittersweet ballad "Souvenir." Another instrumental, the fast and infectious "Root Beer Rag," served as a favorite piano showcase throughout Joel's career, while the snide and clever "The Entertainer" began a career-long obsession with the evils of the pop industry.
Most of the album is about suburbia and its malcontents. While Englishman Elton John, to whom Joel was already being compared, devoted his second major-label album to a concept album about the mythological American West, Joel ...

River Of Dreams
$5.95 Probably the best album in the Flamin' Groovies' huge catalogue, 1971's TEENAGE HEAD is a proto-power pop classic. Certainly, the title track is a stunner. With its hip-shaking rhythm and lead singer Roy Loney's brilliant performance (he sings the line "'Cause I'm angry," as if he's about to burst out laughing), "Teenage Head" is a strong contender for the title of sexiest power pop song ever.

| | Jonatha Brooke Back In The Circus CD (2004)
River Of Dreams
$13.59 Simply put, Jonatha Brooke knows how to write wonderful pop songs. Since her days in the acclaimed folk/pop duo the Story, she has penned elegant, literate, and intricate compositions with melodies that linger in the mind. Her lyrics tumble over each other with acrobatic ease, and Brooke sings them with the sort of intimate sincerity that is impossible to fake. Her fifth solo record, BACK IN THE CIRCUS, finds the singer/songwriter as sharp as ever, her relaxed prowess on full display. Playfully pointed lines abound, as on the Beatlesque opening title track, where she notes "I've got holes in my fishnets and holes in my last alibi."
Brooke also proves proficient with other people's tunes, finding hidden corners in familiar surroundings on her elegiac rendering of the Beach Boys' "God Only Knows" ...
